I think one of Kylo Ren looked like it hadn't gone through photoshop (lightsaber had no color, looked like one of those long fluro lights), so, I'd wager they're incomplete and we'll see them again later.

Here's my theory: the first order is synonymous with that lore or rumor that the emperor gave to implode the empire were he to die. That would have been his "first order" in such a case. Burn it all down, retreat to outer rim, and try again. Well that's my theory about why they're called the first order, thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe.

Gonz posted:Snoke is the money man for this whole operation, if Episode VIII leaks are to be believed. From everything I've read and seen, especially the BTS footage, it looks like TLJ will be like a detour of some sorts from the overall trilogy plot. I'm thinking like how TDK was in Nolanverse trilogy? Honestly aside from the Harvey Dent thing, it has no connection on the third film. TDKR is basically a sequel to Batman Begins and TDK is its own thing. Thematically it's intact as a character arc, but there's no intrinsic link story-wise. A lot of trilogies do this and it works out really well now that I think of it.

I recall a brief interview/panel with Nolan while TDK was being made that that was intentional and that he was of the mind that each one should be able to stand on it's own and TDK is the Batman movie he would have made even if he hadn't done an origin movie first. But he must have changed his mind a little since TDKR can work on it's own but is waaaaayyy more effective if you saw Begins.

If you look at Empire from the "total story" perspective it's also a huge detour if you want to think of it like that. The "main event" is just the rebellion evacuating Hoth and getting to their rally point in space. The two story threads are 1. What a long strange trip it's been trying to limp our space-van back home and 2. Fighter pilot goes on a spiritual retreat at a less than opportune time. TLJ is going to rule. I've been expecting it to be awesome since Johnson was rumored to be attached in 2014.

Having the weight of making an entire trilogy good with only the middle film is a bit much to put on a filmmaker, but I'm glad it's Johnson because he might just pull it off. TFA is kind of masterful in that it sets up a huge amount of themes and characters while remaining a blank slate in terms of what it all means.

This is literally exactly what happens in the Aftermath books, which are in the new EU, so they're canon. So much so that I have a feeling your "theory" came about because you read snippets online from people who read the books, and pieced it together.

I think these story threads could be described differently in a way that demonstrates they are far more central to the entire story. Really it's "Luke learns what it means to be a Jedi, at great personal cost" and "Han and Leia cannot escape the reach of the Empire, which not only deploys overwhelming force but Han analogues (bounty hunters ), corrupts their friends (Lando), uses magic they cannot contest (the For e) and uses them against their best friend (Luke)." The Empire (mostly) wins and Luke learns he cannot win by pitting strength against strength, setting up ROTJ (or maybe the ideal Jedi we never got).

You could tell from his conversation with his copilot on Hoth that Luke moved on from wanting to "take on the whole empire". I got the impression he had realized their fight wasn't going anywhere so he sought out Yoda to become a great warrior and hero and maybe win the war himself. That explains why Yoda is always calling him an idiot who doesn't get it. It's only after he rushes off to be a hero and gets his butt kicked that he learned that fighting wasn't the way to win against the empire
