Does Trump just deal with it and step down or does he say that it's fake news, that the swamp is staging a coup and that this country needs patriotic Americans to protect their president? GOP congresspeople are just mad at him because he's not on their side anymore - now he's on YOUR side, making America great again! What happens when Trump tells his supporters that congress is the enemy, conspiring with Mueller and the rest of the swamp to take down Trump and stop him from making America great again? He’s been trying to break into the Trump administration for months now but the mainstream Republicans were against it.

He was probably trying to endear himself to anyone who’d listen. I’m not sure if the divorce reports are true, but the story there is that his wife left him because of his Trump obsession. So his actions don’t have to make sense.

Yeah it seems like they trained a neural network to generate mouth shapes in response to sound and then had to manually edit them in in the video. It is probably only possible with Obama/major public figures who give addresses/newscasters etc. because you'd probably need a lot of footage of the same person speaking in more or less the same position to train the network. Not really apocalyptic technology

Yeah, but in the episode they make the point that in the pussy-grabbing video you don't actually see Trump until the very end. The point leading up the that was all just audio, which could be faked much more convincingly.

And any idiot could do this since it just takes feeding 20-40 minutes of the person speaking, then typing in a script that you want that person to say. There's lots of ways this could be used and there are tons of people who'd believe it. It can also be done live with just the audio where you speak and it converts it into another person's voice. I could imagine someone calling into a talk radio show pretending to be a senator or something.

You could easily create a "phone recording" of Hillary and some Russian discussing collusion or a "hot mic" video where you don't see the person's lips or just see them from a distance. Just look at Snopes fauxtography section to see how low the bar is for people to believe even the most obvious fakes.

And imagine when this sort of thing is widely used and known about. Trump could have just said "Fake news, I never said that" and that would be good enough for a large portion of the country.

not surprisingly the infowars crowd is declaring a grand victory over the firing of Reince Priebus, pretty much the only guy in the Whitehouse who had a loving clue.

I'm not all that familiar with the structure of the executive branch in the states, isn't the Chief of Staff the dude who is supposed to be beating the drum that everyone dances to? rounding up everyone the president needs to consult, arranging to get the poo poo done the way the president wants it. Herding cats and all.

If Trump wasn't getting anything done before, I don't see how replacing Priebus with some amateur hour general who's used to the military system where everyone does what they are told by their boss without question is going to help things.

As an optimist when it comes to tech I think that if we get to the point where we have software that can convincingly generate false audio and video, we'll certainly have software that can detect false audio and video, even if it could be convincing to the average listener. I also think that, when this sort of thing is widely used the main consequence will be devaluing video and audio as evidence, since right now the difficulty of falsifying those things is what makes them significant. That'll suck but I think it's kind of the price to pay for technological advancement. Plus I bet that the time until we can get legitimately, really, truly convincing fake footage is further in the future than you might expect. I'm saying this since even today you can usually tell even a really excellent photoshop when you see one.

I haven't listened to the episode of radiolab or read the paper where they explain the audio to obama software (just worked with something similar once) and I can't really predict the future so it's all just out-of-my-rear end conjecture but that's just my view and why I'm not particularly worried about it. I really think it'll be down to relying on the accounts of people who have built reputations for trustworthiness in the media, which is what I do now anyway.

edit: I just noticed you addressed the point of devaluing evidence with Trump being able to say "fake news" to any damaging tapes. But I mean he does that now and his base still buys it and Fox News still backs him up on it. Just seems like there's already so much garbage and bullshit in the media ecosystem that this kind of software won't really change that much. Like that ACORN "pimp" video that James O'Keefe made was totally, truly, fooling-nobody fake but the narrative got pushed in the propaganda outlets and it ended up having just as much of an impact.

The trope is for married Republican men to be publicly anti-gay, only to be discovered in a gas station bathroom playing the meat flute. Doesn't quite work in this case because Scaramucci is openly pro-gay rights, and Trump threw the whole "sanctity of marriage in the GOP" thing out the window.

Potentially, Scaramucci might have just re-followed these guys when they followed him, which is a pretty common practice for people on Twitter that like large follow counts. Some even have bots that auto-re-follow. Theoretically these guys could have followed him, waited for the re-follow, then un-followed so they could make a funny screenshot.
