Haier posted:One place I lived, the neighbors would put their garbage bags on the balcony and let them pile up until one of them was willing to take it to the central cans in the hall. The smell on hot days when I opened my door, wow. Also the roaches. Back when I lived in student housing (here in Finland), there was a pair of Chinese dudes living in the flat below mine. The next summer I noticed there were a lot of flies around, like "open a window and you'll have 150 flies in your flat" a lot. The balconies in the building had this weird translucent glass from about waist height to the floor, so you could kinda see vague shadows of things that were on the balcony. So I knew they had a bunch of stuff on their balcony, but no idea what it could've been. Until one day the pile got so high that it was obvious even from the street that their balcony was in fact stocked (at this point) to about chest height with garbage bags and rotting cardboard and there was a huge cloud of flies buzzing around it and nesting in the stucco walls. I went down to tell them to clean their poo poo, but they literally just stared at me as I was trying to explain to them that this poo poo doesn't fly. No effect, naturally. So I complained to the housing authority, and in response they sent an open email to all the students living in student housing in the city, reminding them very politely that trash should be taken down to the garbage bins in the street (literally 5 meters from the front door). About a month later, in mid August, I noticed one day that the garbage pile had at least been lowered a bit and for a moment dared hope that the two idiots were carting their poo poo out to the bins. Those hopes were dashed the moment I opened the door to the lobby and was greeted with the putrid stench of rotten ... filth. A huge maggoty pile of garbage had in fact been dumped in the hallway outside their door. The two moved out shortly afterwards, at which point builders came and tore their apartment down to the concrete, because apparently everything was so filthy and the walls were encrusted with nicotene that literally nothing could be reused for the next tenants.

A little late on the backpackers chat but I, too, despise them. Especially when it's rear end in a top hat to elbows on my commute to work and some oblivious German is wearing, what appears to be, a backpack for climbing the alps (based on the amount of space it takes up on his back.)

HAIER BORING SATURDAY BLOG POSTING: I am suffering from a nasal infection and on two different non-TCM nasal sprays, which have taken away my ability to taste and smell completely. I would probably find my room unbearable due to the smell of the smog (like car exhaust), but I stayed home all day except for a trip to the supermarket, and cooked a meal I couldn't taste. I loaded it up on chilis hoping it would unload my nose, but it had zero effect. I was having a mild fever and decided to go walk and sweat it out tonight. The medicines plus my fever made everything outside really slow and the lights kinda bright, and the music I was listening to seemed like it was from some other dimension. All those flashy building lights and less people outside made for a really cool walk. I was staring at a lot of buildings and spacing out, feeling weird as heck. I decided to jog, which I haven't done in a while, so I could sweat more. I got soaked, it owned. The fever hit a peak and I immediately felt better. I kept jogging and did about 3km, total walk was 9km, so it was a decent use of time. Oh yeah, there was a Face Off. I was walking down the foot bridge when to shirtless sweaty dudes arrived at the bottom. One guy stopped and looked up at me and we made eye contact. He started walking up the stairs in a direct path to me, obviously some face bullshit where he wants to assert himself and make me move out of the way. I wasn't going to go for that, but seeing how slimy the dude was, I was rethinking my idea of trying to win this match to avoid some staph infection if we collided. At the very last moment he sideways stepped around me. I won. I hate how every small thing in this idiotic culture becomes a needlessly and uselessly passive-aggressive game with no real result except for all the times people die from it. In my daze tonight, I was watching everyone move around and I thought "None of this makes anything easier, it only makes life here harder. They loving love to make everything difficult for themselves." Der Shovel posted:A huge maggoty pile of garbage had in fact been dumped in the hallway outside their door. Oh yeah, i don't know if anyone else's VPNs are doing this, but on my Windows version of Vypr for like five days now it won't let me use Google search, Youtube, and often Facebook. Some of the servers won't work at all for anything. I have to use Bing now and it sucks, and most of the websites it links won't load. It still works fine for Android.

There's a ton of international students in my city, both for highschool and university. I've known a lot of people who host home-stays or rent out a basement apartment to them, and it's fairly universally accepted that you really try to get a japanese lady because the place will be clean, maybe even cleaner than when she moved in and generally so quiet you don't even know they are there. It's also know that chinese boys will be trouble, either messy, socially awkward, or will end up in hosed up car/driving related legal problems. They will never talk to you and act like they're so shy they're maybe autistic, they will politely nod while staring into space when you explain any sort of house rules or how to use appliances or where you can park or where the garbage goes, then totally ignore it all and do the opposite, and no amount of explaining or demanding will change it. One friend had to kick a guy out because he kept flushing garbage down the toilet. The first time, ok, maybe he didn't know you can't flush like paper towel and poo poo down the toilet? The 2nd time, the 3rd time, the 4th time?? Never an apology, just stare into space and nod, "yes, I understand" then right back into it. No reaction on getting kicked out either, just quietly went and packed up, left a ton of garbage and dirty laundry behind, and moved onto the next place his parents paid for. But it's just the guys, ladies can be messy, they can be noisy, they can break the rules and cause trouble just like anyone, but you can always at least have a human to human conversation with them. You don't get this autistic force field.

I'm guessing a big part of the problem in Hangzhou is that everyone wants to ride a bike around the West Lake because it is ~~very famours~~. Then take the complete lack of fucks that the average person gives about not dumping shared bikes in retarded places in their own neighborhood, and multiply it by 888 when they're tourists at some place they'll never come back to. I also noticed a distinct lack of shared bikes in big cities in the Northeast by comparison. It might have something to with the fact that who wants to ride a bike in the winter when it's -40 and the streets are ice pits of death.
