No release date, but it looks like DQ XI will be coming the West!

Now we just need them to confirm a Switch version (and that it's coming West as well). Don't have a PS4 and would definitely prefer a Switch version over the 3DS version if possible. Especially if you need a New 3DS.

Though not making a version for the Switch would be lunacy. Hell even if it's 6-12 months later they'd sell millions of copies just in Japan.

DQ8 is available on mobile too.

It might not be very good on mobile, but it exists...

They took a lot of features straight from the Dragon Quest MMO it seems. I also think I got a title when I completed the first little trial of becoming an adult, which is weird for a single player game. Maybe I mistranslated that though.

Probably has street pass features or something? Bravely Default / Second let you set titles as well.

Yeah I only have 3 titles so far, one was for beating the intro thing like you said, one for reaching the first castle, and the other was for collecting 10 items. Unlike quests, items, and monsters, though, there's no indicate on the Lists menu of how many titles (achievements?) the game has.

I watched a JP streamer play it for a little bit yesterday. Yup, it's DQ all right. He had 5 party members, though. I think that's a first in the series.

There've been a few cases where you get a fifth guest party member, but they're not under your control and you can't see their stats or anything, and they might even be fake.

Regarding party: It's like older DQ games where you have 7 party members that you can swap out at the beginning of any turn.

PS4 version looks great, the 3ds one not so much; I think they kinda botched up the retro art style, and it feels completely fake.

Last Celebration

Yeah I sort of got that idea from the trailers and screenshots; the game doesn't look like an actual 2D game, it looks like a high quality retro mock-up someone did to homage the old games, if that makes sense.

Also party chat's in, right? And the absurdly detailed version 5/6 got?

It looks like the mobile remakes of 1-3 to me, I guess it depends on how much you like the style of those. I think it's fine.

TBH I'm kinda surprised given how much support Ninty's been giving the series, but localizing a game for a by-then long-dead console probably wasn't super appealing.

My guess is that we'll get the 3DS one too. Lots of folks prefer to play JRPGs on a portable, and while the DQ audience here isn't huge there's folks dedicated enough to double dip.

I wonder how much the translation for one version applies to the other.

If a Switch version never gets mentioned for the US I guess this will be one of the things that makes me eventually get a PS4 since everything on it so far that I've wanted to play also came out on PC (or the Switch, in Disgaea 5's case). At least PS4s are getting dirt cheap, they were around $200 during Prime Day on Amazon.

Next stream I will be doing on the fly translations so be sure to follow if you are interested in seeing the early game played out!

PS4 version really seems like the way to go with this one. It feels like a more modern version of Dragon Quest 8, and the production values are great all around. I just don't really like the 3DS version, it feels like the fine details have been skimped over. Also my Slide Stick is broken and the text the game gives you when you use the d-pad is harder to read (you get 3DS style DQ game text on the top screen when you use Analog to move and NES style DQ game text on the bottom screen when you use the d-pad). Cool features none-the-less, but the PS4 version definitely has some magic that the 3DS one is lacking.

I believe that's because of a strange relationship they have with the guy who composed the classic DQ music, where he stopped allowing sound effects to be played over it. The same reason there's so many trailers for DQ games that are completely silent other than the DQ theme.

They're used to play a board mini-game. There's several locations with different boards, first available one is in the basement of the first casino you come across, IIRC.

The only thing I want to know about DQXI is it's release date for NA 3DS.

I haven't played a DQ game yet that I haven't liked. I'm still playing VII now. I just got to Chapter 3 and I decided I wanted to grind out DLC tablets until the end of time. I'm mostly done maxing out all of my vocations for all of my available party members and I'm working on completing my Monster Book entries and recruiting all of the DLC monsters.

I think I played DQIX on the DS for a year straight, just collecting all the DLC items and farming the end game dungeons.

I'm at about the 15 hour mark so far. It seems very reminiscent of DQ8, at least on the PS4. I think if you like DQ8 there's probably no way you could hate this game. The skill system is a grid that branches out in various weapons/disciplines and works similar to 8 but gives you a little bit more freedom. It still locks you in to somewhat limited choices. It would be way more interesting if it was a combination of a grid and the old class system. The game suffers from a bit of FF13 hallway syndrome where you are mostly limited to your current area for exploration, and that is a little unfortunate. I just got a ship, so it might open up a bit soon. Leveling seems a bit more spread out than most DQ games; you'll level faster but higher level will be needed to progress.

I killed a metal slime, it gave me 2k exp.

Not gonna lie the 3ds version looks pretty bad

There are plenty of sprite based DQs that probably play exactly the same and I'm concerned that the two formats into one thing means that the gameplay is going to be limited and dull.

I mean its DQ so the gameplay is already very basic but without the allure of delicious current standards graphics, I'd have a lot of trouble getting excited over yet another sprite based DQ game.

So PS4 it shall be

Load up on herbs and make sure you and Saber are equipped with the best things you can buy. The dungeon's not all that long but it is kinda confusing so you can end up spending more time there than you're meant to.

For those curious about skill trees and what abilities you get from them in XI, I decided to just mumble on to myself (and 1 or 2 other viewers) about what pretty much every square on the various grids for the first 5 party members does.

Starts with me being indecisive, but then I look up hidden squares and go into detail.
