Another story but this ones about a friend who was a sandwich "artist" at subway during our senior year in high school. So Kevin got a job at subway and he was alone at the shop most nights and so he would make you a sub write it up as a chip or a drink only and pocket the 5 or 6 dollars you gave him for a however much meat or vegetable sub sandwich you wanted he was very generous with ingredients. Anyway Kevin would sell handmade subs for basically nothing at least as corporate was concerned, so his manager got wind of the chain losing money and so he instructed the sandwich artist's to use as few olives as possible. Olives were the most expensive ingredient. After that Kevin would always ask if the person wanted extra olives, he was always openly vindictive about this so I assume his manager made his life hell. Anyway one night Kevin is giving up subs for a dollar and he sells the entire contents of the fridge for like $20, so we could use them as mixers. He fully expected to be fired but instead the manager blames theft. Apparently the cameras weren't on (or more likely did not exist because the manager/owner is so cheap) in this particular subway so Kevin was allowed to quit in good will with corporate as he was never found out. That's two corporate gets hosed stories... My friend Justin Worked at Abercrombie and Fitch, he ended up being fired (I don't know the official reason) after he got sent to juvie for assault, for two days . They later rehired him back after charges had been dropped. As he should have basically Justin was hosed up and spat on a cop when he was 17. Justin was not a smart kid and he would not grow to be an intelligent man, so this always stood out for me. Me: "How was Juvie?" Justin: "Fine, it was actually kind of cool because I was the smartest kid in class. The rest of those assholes were dumb as hell"

A few years back I was working a evening shift and I look outside to see one of our then regulars (and one nobody liked) try to pull into the parking lot. However, we were getting a gasoline delivery and she tries to pull in on the side of the truck that the dispensing hoses are connected to. The driver noticed her trying to do this and immediately yells too her that she needs to go around the other side. (Fun fact: gas vapors and hot exhaust systems generally don't mix well) Eventually she obliges, but then immediately marches into the store and demands that we call the police on the driver for threatening her. Not really knowing what the hell else to do, I call them up. The cops come by and after talking with the customer and driver, one of the cops comes in. He asks me if I witnessed the customer driving into the lot. I told him yeah, not really thinking about why he would ask me that. Turns out she got a citation for driving without a valid license and the truck driver didn't get poo poo. Sometimes the good guys win, folks.

I did my usual route delivering to the country club last because they weren't going to tip well anyway and got a stern lecture from one of them. He went into a rant about how he paid good money for this pizza, demands high quality service and how dare it take this long to arrive. I started to leave after he signed the receipt and it was clear I wasn't getting a tip. This broke something in the guy's brain because his rant started getting louder and more incoherent. I started getting into my car to leave and the guy throws his pizza into the middle of his yard. I leave and go back to the store where the manager is glaring at me and on the phone. Angry stinky man was on the phone screaming at the manager now. The manager puts the phone on mute and starts yelling over this. Sometime in the middle of the manager's theatrics he called the customer a whole bunch of rude names and the phone goes quiet. The manager notices and stops shouting to pick up the phone. It turns out the manager is an idiot and can't figure out how to use a two line phone, it wasn't on mute and the customer heard everything. The manager panicked and tried to calm the customer. Holy paragraphs, Batman! Sister worked at Best Buy during high school. She was mostly customer service/returns/exchanges. One day a dude and his wife come in, buys the ipod that looks like an iphone (touch) and leaves. 2 hours later, they come back and say that they need a refund because their Ipod Touch was in fact a pack of cards that still had the dollar store price tag on it. Funny enough, there is a dollar store a few minutes away from the Best Buy and it's pretty obvious they're full of poo poo because that's basically impossible for a new, never opened before, Ipod Touch box. Sister says she can't refund that because that's actually impossible. His wife calls her a bitch and leans over the counter to try and grab the box, which his awesome because then security intervenes and the district director was at the store. He laughs at them and has security escort them out of the store, both's pictures were sent to other stores nearby as well. It was found out the manager of another store 2 towns over had approved such returns before and they had been doing it for a while until they changed stores to not get caught. Also, one day they saw, on-camera, someone crouching down in a dvd aisle and just take a dump before running out. Not a child... a 50+ yo man.

My niece instantly realised that what this metric actually meant was that she should do everything in her power to discourage every sale which did not consist of one of these selected items. Especially expensive items. So, if someone wants to buy an expensive smartphone which isn't on the list, she'll either tell them it's cheaper at the supermarket up the road, or tell them they have none left in stock. Sure, it sucks to be that customer, but having that sale on her shift would put her below the arbitrary bullshit threshold corporate has set and why should she suffer because of that stupid crap? My web design team figured out that our bonuses weren't calculated by the amount of cases we processed, but the percentage of time we had cases open during the day. Cue us rationing cases during slow days so that everyone had cases open for hours and exceeding their bonus thresholds.

It's one thing to incentivize certain products over others (I imagine the company gets a higher cut, or it's a store-brand thing they're upselling or something), but to actively discourage good salespeople by punishing them for not selling Brand X in particular is insane to even think about. I don't know how any company would think that's any sort of good idea, much less what I imagine is a national electronics chain or something.

The difficulty is they dont think through how an incentive structure should work and dont want the incentive structure to be "we pay you more/comission". A friend of mine does modeling and analysis for companies and had to do one for employee metrics where his recommendation boiled down to "fire the person who came up with this metric and reward system"
