same. the middle of broad city's last season wasn't great and it wasn't just because of the hillary cameo, but it's very funny and self-aware when it's on its A game. however, i'm very nervous about the upcoming season throwing away what made it such a good show and instead being woke comedy trash like so much of comedy central's lineup. early releases about them bleeping out every instance of "trump" and rewriting lots of the season because they didn't expect hillary to lose are a couple of red flags

Watched this clip as it's been reposed a few times. I'm obviously not the audience for this program, but I'm confused as to what they're trying to accomplish here?

Honestly this whole thing just feels like a nation wide fad that's going to crash and burn horribly in the near future. It already kind of has with who's in the White House, but I imagine people as a whole are going to start rejecting this hamfisted stuff in their television programs and via their marketing.

It's not even a "white people" sort of thing. I kinda wonder if people as a whole are going to go "Enough".

it's because it is a fad, for a certain definition of it. the people who make the money have realised that there's an untapped market that is happy to conflate consuming media with being progressive. for example, that new ghostbusters movie article that says you should buy everything to support it.

the problem is, because it is a profit-driven exercise, the moment profits fall behind what is expected -- or word of mouth is that the product is bad, preachy, whatever -- they'll inevitably switch back the previous model.

this is somewhat related to what taintrunner said about how there is always this strange marketing push to 'fight' the 'internet trolls'. the culture war narrative sold by both sides of the political spectrum is just the newest, and probably most effective, way of getting money from people for a product. it is also probably the most insidious because it is teaching people that it is perfectly fine to have your identity marketed providing that you think the person doing it is Good. sort of like how big companies started pushing back against the idea that there is no such thing as gender because it is harder to market products to Every Single Human than it is to Boys And Girls.

it's just capitalism defending itself, and there's a ton of people who don't see the problem of capitalism defending itself in a cloak of idpol, packaging how people choose to express themselves into happy little soundbytes and 'badass' hot takes

well, saying capitalism sucks usually just gets you marked as a crank by those who worship capitalism, so you gotta go into a bit more detail

and then they still call you a crank :D

It's funny how the people who tend to be upset about 'cultural appropriation' have absolutely no idea of telling when they're being shamelessly appropriated and used for the benefit of others, at the expense of the welfare of the people it's supposed to protect.

To paraphrase Hank Hill, 'you're not making feminism better, you're making pop culture worse'.

(Kind of ironic that Mike Judge seemed to be almost unique in recognising how cringeworthy and derivative Christian rock usually is)

Feminism can be an insanely cool thing. I learned a lot from my college professors about their pov's on various issues and really enjoyed the dialogue.

The way it's being jammed into various media is just...cheesey. It comes across as some sort of state sponsored propaganda rather than someone's sincerely held beliefs on topics related to women's rights, lgbt rights, and racial justice.

That is the vibe I'm getting off a lot of this stuff is indeed the Christian Rock/Media type of vibe.

hahahaha. that's insanely accurate.
