They're Watching did pump it up at the end but the effects were so laughably bad that I couldn't get into it.

I just started The Den and hopefully it provides something a bit more interesting.

You're surprised? I have more posts in this thread than SuperMechaGodzilla, that's more terrifying than any movie yet discussed. (I know horror isn't SMG's genre, but having more posts than him in any CD thread is a thing.)

I think the title everyone should check out is And Soon the Darkness which just got added to Shudder. It's directed by Robert Fuest who directed one of the favorite films of the horror thread Abominable Dr. Phibes ( he also did the sequel).

Has anyone seen Burning Bright ? Sounds like Cujo but with a Tiger and a Hurricane.

You should check out Entrance for a movie that deals with similar themes a whole lot more expertly if you haven't.

I didn't mind The Den though.

I lied I guess. I watched The Stranger. Which is not so much a horror movie as an overwrought melodrama. It did keep my attention to the end but it's not a must watch.

Hey, horror thread! I am several thousand posts behind and am trying to get caught up, but in case I die before that happens I wanted to share a podcast that my wife and I recorded. We're watching movies that we select completely at random from the Scarecrow Video Movie Guide, and the first movie we ended up selecting was Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. You can check it out here, but be forewarned-- since it's our first podcast the audio quality isn't what it could be, and we're both a little awkward at first as we try to get our podcasting legs beneath us. Anyway, check it out if you like, and feel free to mock our poorly informed opinions!

Wolfman doesn't tranform at a full moon.

"Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright."

Fun fact a full Moon does not appear in the first Wolf Man movie.

I liked your podcast and I thought the audio was fine.

I have abandoned Battle Royale 2 because I wasn't in a foreign movie mood and instead am watching The Backwoods with Gary Oldman, he's not the only person in it there's some other people but like he's in it.

Good to know! These movies were/are blind spots in our horror movie knowledge, so we were working under traditional assumptions of how werewolves do things.

Glad the podcast sounded okay-- we've recorded a few episodes in advance, and our most recent episode was about The Mangler, so I'll link to that when the time comes. The Mangler is... good? Bad, but entertainingly bad? I had low expectations for it, what with it being a twenty-page short story extended to a movie that was an hour and forty-five minutes long, but I liked it a lot more than I was expecting to.

The last 25 minutes of The Mangler is some of the greatest footage ever committed to film. I wasn't a fan of it until like last October during the Scream Stream.

The first Wolf Man is also really loving funny at parts. There's a lot of really great lines in that movie.

You should watch the first movie it's super good.

You all need to watch The Backwoods it's fantastic. It really is best described as Deliverance meets Straw Dogs.If I had to force everyone to watch one movie this weekend that would be the movie.

Acting, cinematography, setting, plot, structure, everything I felt was just totally excellent.

Also , it's a "realistic" horror film which I love.

If I only wanted to watch one version of the Red Dragon story should I watch Red Dragon or Manhunter?

Manhunter, ideally the one that's called the "director's cut" if available (it was first around via an Anchor Bay DVD but I don't know if it's on blu-ray). I like every version of the movie but that one, while not as restored, has some interesting little bits in it that make it the best to me. Still I'd say any cut of the movie is very good.

There's nine different cuts of Manhunter and at one point four of them were in circulation from the same company in the same year but this wasn't noted on the packaging or anything, craziness.

I read the wiki before I watched it. , Manhunter both the directors cut and the theatrical version are equal. Red Dragon is good , but it really doesn't compare to Manhunter

It's probably not as good as Manhunter (which I haven't seen; it's on my list) but the Hannibal TV series' season that deals with the material is a step up from Red Dragon at least. It's also a wild departure from the books as opposed to the comparatively faithful adaptation the Anthony Hopkins movies go for.

Manhunter is the best. The Hannibal TV show has the second best adaptation of Red Dragon, but it has the third best Dolarhyde.

Manhunter is, in my opinion, the best looking film Mann has ever shot. Mann was one of the first directors to jump into the digital era with both feet, so I guess it's not surprising that his pre-digital work really translates well to blu ray and 1080p. The recent blu ray that Shout Factory did looks fantastic.

To be more relevant to the thread, it's also much scarier than Red Dragon. You'll never hear me say a bad word about Ralph Fiennes, and I do really enjoy his performance in Red Dragon, but everything comes together in Manhunter to make Dollarhyde a completely terrifying monster. Noonan is amazing of course, but I give a lot of the credit/blame to Mann and Ratner. Mann's style enhances the tension and horror, Ratner's softens it and never allows me to forget that I'm watching a big Hollywood movie(Hopkins presence doesn't help in that regard either to be honest).

The Legend of Hell House was awesome. I really liked the camera work and the overall aesthetic of the movie. I was amazed by how faithful it was to the book, while still managing to keep it PG (the book is a hard R). I asked the thread earlier if the weird sex stuff from the book was still in the movie because I couldn't see how the story would work without it, but didn't really expect to see full on crucifix rape in the film. It managed to keep it mostly all in there without being too explicit. It was kind of weird seeing it with an all British cast after reading it and assuming them all the be American characters though.

I really need to read the book. Despite the film being PG, I was still very surprised by the sexuality on display. There's nothing visually erotic or pornographic, but there's a pretty racy orgasmic seduction (with a "character" we know to be one of the most evil spirits imaginable), made weirder/more intriguing that it's basically a monologue weighted entirely on Pamela Franklin's acting through a conversation we're hearing one side of. She's awesome in that movie.

It's also one of my favorite Roddy McDowall roles. He's channeling Elisha Cook Jr.'s performance in House on Haunted Hill, but going more outrageous with the lunacy but being a more grounded character in general. BF, if you've never seen The Legend of Hell House, check it out for more awesome Roddy.

It also has one of my favorite seance scenes.

I need to do a Haunted House theme for my Horror Movie Night when it's closer to October.

The writing in the Hannibal tv show is so incredibly dire, which is weird considering how "prestige" the cinematography, makeup, sets, and (most of the) acting is.

I've been meaning to give it another shot for a few years, I kinda forced it in as a double feature one night during the October challenge when I probably shouldn't have. I was fighting to stay awake and not really properly enjoying the movie, so I've always known I need to circle back on it.

For some reason my reaction to The Asphyx was more like "holy poo poo 10/10", whereas my reaction to Hellhouse was like "not bad, can't say I loved it but it was pretty good". A lot of times when I go back to a film with more energy to pay proper attention it jumps up a level from what I thought it was on first watch, so it's likely that could happen with Hellhouse.
