Yeah, I was trying to think about who it was (pretty embarrassing I admit). Highschool history doesn't go that far, and while I do probably know the general idea of things that happened I don't know the exact deets. Like I know Nixon resigned because he figured he would be removed from office, but I didn't realize they actually began the process of impeachment.

Another bit of relevant SA history- Helldump 2000, the forum for goon callouts and witch hunts. At first it seemed to be a force for good as it led to a purge of thinly veiled pedophiles from the forums and were one of the forces hunting down and eliminating the toxically libertarian, but they ran out of easy targets. They got all the pedophiles, bigots, paultards and at least one rapist, so they went after people with obnoxiously bad social skills, or who admitted to terrible hygiene, or who clearly suffered from untreated mental illness. Then just whoever a critical mass of goons hated that week. Then each other. It was put out of its misery around the same time LF was.

In high school I barely made it to the 1920's by the end and to the depression. No talk of WW1 or WW2. Expansive topics to be sure. No talks about really anything beyond that. I learned about that history much later, or in snippets when we talked about stuff like the Crucible in English class and would get a minor history lesson in the bargain. I remember my brother talked about how his history teacher blazed through modern history on purpose so he could talk to his kids about Vietnam and really focus down on it since it was a favorite subject of his teacher's.

I always thought a big part of the leftist shift was the economy cratering in 08 or so. Lot harder to be libertarian or conservative when you suddenly find your on the short end of the capitalism stick. That and people getting older and actually seeing capitalism in action.

Chuck Tingle is interesting because on one hand he could be a person who struggles daily with mental illness or he's a persona created by someone who pretends to be someone who is suffering from crippling mental illness for purposes of satire. Both are kind of depressing when you really think about it.

It's really hard to find a conservative/right-ist circle jerk that's made any sense in the past like 15 years. Even Trump's election win seemed full of self-hating spite. The only consistent thread was the Supreme Court Justice, and even that didn't seem to be readily defensed when people were asked how it helped them pillsburysoldier fucked around with this message at 06:40 on Aug 2, 2017 |

I mean imagine if like, libraries just disappeared. To the GOP, liberalism/progressivism must be prevented at all costs from having an uninterrupted 16 year period of control (and not just of the executive branch). 16 years is enough time that a child born the day the first of two consecutive two term progressive presidents (ideally with a ideologially-cooperative legislative branch - something we'll never have again) is inaugurated spends their entire formative learning years educated in a system that isn't *always* trying to profit off of them at every single turn. It's also a period of time where the parents of said child aren't beset with fear on how they'll afford to raise him or her, or have to kill themselves to give them a fighting chance at independence when they reach adulthood. Sixteen years is a long enough period that "the new normal" can become just "normal," and normality is a very powerful social influence that can cost rich people a lot of money - like it used to be *normal* for the rich to have a high tax rate, but two terms of Nixon, one of Ford, and two of Reagan (yes, I'm snipping out Carter's term, like revisionist American history has) lionized Laffer Curve trickle-down economics.
