This speculation is based only on the tiny "SCMP graphics" tag in the corner, but I think this might be less "dumb person doesn't know Chinese languages are very different" and more "Chinese partisan leaning into the importance/unity of 'Chinese' language and people"

It is also really useless visualization in general, since it accounts only for ~4.12 billion people. So basically that graph leaves almost half of the planet out for the sake of clarity, and does not say anything about the languages used or understood, only lists the native languages that have more than 50M speakers.
