Congratulations! also spotted a mahoosive typo right there on the frickin' cover, which somehow evaded both my and the artist's attention for two weeks my current theory is that every book contains more typos than there are actual characters so uh paperback release date will be Monday, which gives me until Saturday before the final upload (using Createspace, whose products are actually lovely! which they certainly should be, given the price) so I'll be going over every aspect with a fine-toothed comb (the ebook's been out two weeks and is doing really well! but everyone keeps asking for a PB, so) divabot has a new favorite as of 18:34 on Aug 3, 2017 |

Annoying, so I went through again after another few months so I wouldn't just be skimming words I already knew. Fine... Then it goes to print again and on the back page there's a typo! So I pull the book again, fix that one word, nothing more, send it back to print and I get a proof copy... And Somehow the cover is now completely misaligned and I want to put my head through a wall and never look at a computer again!

Today, RPO author Ernest Cline issued a youtube DMCA takedown notice. What was this notice for, you ask? Oh, just a dramatic reading of some, uh, RPO quotes. https://twitter.com/supergreatfrien/status/893286470890516480 quote:“I would argue that masturbation is the human animal's most important adaptation. The very cornerstone of our technological civilization. Our hands evolved to grip tools, all right—including our own. You see, thinkers, inventors, and scientists are usually geeks, and geeks have a harder time getting laid than anyone. Without the built-in sexual release valve provided by masturbation, it's doubtful that early humans would have ever mastered the secrets of fire or discovered the wheel. And you can bet that Galileo, Newton, and Einstein never would have made their discoveries if they hadn't first been able to clear their heads by slapping the salami (or "knocking a few protons off the old hydrogen atom"). The same goes for Marie Curie. Before she discovered radium, you can be certain she first discovered the little man in the canoe.”

By the time I came across it it was already taken down and someone in the comments referenced the Marie Curie bit so I thought it was that. Honestly that poem is even funnier. quote:These aren't real women. They're objects. What the gently caress is this.

Ernest Cline, RPO and Armada are so terrible, so truly awful, that I'm half-tempted to ask you guys to cool it as a subject until the movie comes out and more people are exposed to it. I mean, if a mod could change the title to "PYF terrible book: Yes, RPO is really that bad" or something I think it would get the point across. That's like the second or third time that poem has been posted in a week.

Some woman saw me star books on goodreads or something (I mean I never really wrote reviews, I literally just starred books for a while & then got bored with it). Anyway, she contacted me and sent me her novel, called something like "Twin Souls", asking for criticism/review. It is literally fanfiction about her and her deceased husband if he hadn't died & I can't bring myself to read it much less give feedback. Just tragic all around tbh.

I don't know why I enjoy people making GBS threads on RPO as much as I do. I haven't read many terrible books though, mostly because the reccomendations I get are normally solid. I read the whole thing though, waiting for something of substance to happen.

I'm angry that someone was able to monetize my stupid childhood nostalgia for stupid bullshit cartoons made to sell toys that my parents (to their eternal credit) refused to buy me. I think the worst thing about it is that it just isn't fun, which is something of a miracle. You'd think that a story specifically written as an anything-goes medley of cool things from classic movies and games would manage at least that, but every single detail is just forced, lifeless, and false. It feels very similar to The Big Bang Theory, which is a show that expects its audience to be ignorant of the nerd references and laugh at the characters who make them. How does a guy as committed to nerddom as Cline manage that?

As much as people like to accuse nerds of worshipping pop culture because they have nothing else going on in their lives that they pay attention to at all, (and still managing to miss the point of everything they watch/read) Cline looks to be an example of exactly that.

But Big Bang Theory isn't really for a nerd audience; it's really for people who interact with nerds enough to find really broad satires of them funny. Does RPO appeal to non-nerds on any level? I know it references broad pop culture things, but is the level of worship towards the obscure stuff going to appeal to people who don't know or care about it?

There are definitely people out there who find RPO fun, but I also found it pretty joyless, aside from a few isolated bits that landed for me (because I'm a nerdlinger). I feel like it's probably because it's such a laundry list, almost never actually describing anything besides listing off the things it's referencing; my assumption is that people who found it fun are the ones who were willing/able to do the extra mental work to imagine and embellish what Cline implies. That's reasonable enough (if you're gonna read dumb schlock and you want to put in the work to have a good time, feel free), but it's not really about any quality of the book at that point.

That's a very good point. If you're looking to be pandered to, I guess that caring about the "quality" of the pandering is a little silly.
