I was reading this piece by Jon Chait on McConnell's plan for tax reform/tax cuts fro the rich: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/08/mcconnell-tricked-into-admitting-he-wants-tax-cuts-for-rich.html And one thing I don't get about this tax reform business is that allegedly, the idea is that we can lower tax rates by eliminating revenue. Some people have even went on to say that this would result in rich people paying more in taxes than they would have. But I never understood the rationale behind it. Because the whole point of this seems to be that taxes are too high on the job creators and so we need to lower them to be competitive worldwide or whatever. But if you lower the rates, but ALSO eliminate the loopholes, supposedly making them pay MORE in taxes, doesn't that defeat the entire drat purpose?

Teddybear posted:In this scenario, he would become president before the halfway point of Trump's first term (Jan 20, 2019-- Congress is sworn in two weeks earlier, and thus he wouldn't be speaker if the Dems won the house as this scenario suggests.) He would need to ascend to the presidency before Jan 6, 2019, which would mean he would serve more than half of Trump's first term, leaving him eligible for only one more term. I think you have a point. I guess Ryan would really have to hate himself for this to be a possible future.

Mr Interweb posted:I was reading this piece by Jon Chait on McConnell's plan for tax reform/tax cuts fro the rich: The argument is that a high marginal rate + many deductions and credits makes it so that companies spend a lot of time and money to try and find ways to classify their income in exempt ways. If you lower the rate, but remove the deductions and credits, then they will end up paying more because they can't take as many deductions. Additionally, it becomes more economically efficient because larger firms won't have the advantage of putting more work into tax avoidance compared to smaller firms.

Eh...still sounds highly dubious to me. How many tax accountants do even large firms hire? Like 5? Somehow I doubt that the ability to lay off a few of them (they still have to keep a few around regardless) would make much of a difference.

You would be surprised how many companies hire someone who costs as much or more than the tax breaks to find them. The idea being it'll eventually pay out. It's not always a financial thing avoiding taxes, often it's an expression of emotion tied into financial trappings. Which is why it's foolish to ever claim discussions about money are just 'practical'. They're ALWAYS steeped in moral judgements.

They hire a firm that throws many attorneys and accountants at their books for thousands of billable hours. What do you think Ernst and Young does when they're not tallying the Grammy winners?

Lawyers get involved for poo poo like estate planning too, since that's obviously part of the broader issue of tax avoidance. Presumably large businesses hire them to work with/oversee their accountants too though, particularly when dealing with offshore issues. Republicans aren't entirely wrong about the tax code being too complicated, though their desire to simplify is often just code for cut and/or flatten.

At this point it seems like Trump's greatest asset is that he has completely surrounded himself with easy targets. It's the inept criminal equivalent of fish shoaling or antelope herding as an anti-predator adaptation. If Mueller isn't careful in maintaining focus his team could easily get distracted piling charges onto people like Flynn and Carter Page, who if we continue the antelope analogy are at the edge of the herd rolling around on their backs too dumb to determine that running involves the hooves being on the ground instead of in the air.
