obv im all about medicare for all but if i had a choice between nothing and medicare at 55, i will take a system that makes healtcare cheaper for the majorit of americans and gives millions of them better healthcare my issue with pragmatism is like somehow its always tax credits for billionaires. medicare at 55 is straight up just a decent policy that is Actually Pragmatic.

Medicare to 55 also lowers premiums for young people by removing the sickest group from the insurance pools. It's extremely good.

Yeah it is better than nothing and if the option was "Medicare at 55" or "Medicare at 65" then sure, go Medicare at 55. But if you're making the move anyway then you might as well move everybody over. Plus if your entry position is "Medicare for all" you can fall back to "Medicare at 55". If your entry position is Medicare at 55 you have nowhere to move back to other than the current system.

lol, the cost for a lovely bronze plan at my age is about $8,000/year in premiums with a $7,000/year deductible. (and that's only allowing one hospital + group of doctors for that princely sum.) for $135/month I could get some sweet hmo under medicare that covers 100 percent of everything medical + prescription drugs. (eta: I would also be able to use about 80 percent of doctors + 100 percent of hospitals under medicare.) but of course dems will prolly sponsor some lovely "buy-in" for medicare for those under 65 with annual costs of slightly under $19,000/year, which is what the government currently spends on 65+ olds. (back when the ACA was being crafted I remember looking up the cost of medicare to the government and iirc it was about $9k/year. So much for "bending the cost curve" instead of doubling the government's cost over the last 8 years.)

oh wait, that $19k/year for medicare was actually the figure from 2012, lol.

Medicare at 55 is really good, yes. But people are dying by the thousands right now. I'm not dissing M@55, but it's just another laughable example of the Dem leadership pushing for half-measures and expecting a wave of support for them.

Main Paineframe posted:literally just stealing and (poorly) repackaging planks of Trump's campaign platform This is fitting cause in 1992 the dems decided they just wanted to repackage republican policies in a friendlier wrapping with a cool saxaphone playing president and it worked. In 2008 they ran a cool black guy who was against gay marriage and ran a virtually identical foreign policy to Bush. Seems like in my lifetime, dems only know how to win when voters got sick of republicans and decide to give the diet republicans a chance. And then of course they get swept out of office again shortly after.

I've posted before about how I think the left needs to focus right now more on organizing and less on finding the perfect candidate. Here's a twitter thread on point https://twitter.com/ErinGoudreau/status/893227607348609026 I'll copy/paste the whole thing here with editing for no character limits quote:I've been thinking a lot lately about how we build socialism in a place like White Sulphur Springs, MT, population: 939. We're talking majority of people with either no or incomplete college education, median income below $30,000, rural, secluded, ranching & blue collar labor as primary sources of income. No hospitals, two rural health clinics. We're talking about people who care deeply about community, who've chosen to raise their families in this beautiful, but oft forgotten place.

"In Germany in the 1930s, the Social Democratic Party (a left-wing liberal party) promoted Hindenburg over Hitler in the elections because he was seen as a “lesser evil”, despite the warnings by the German Communist Party that “a vote for Hindenburg is a vote for Hitler”. Hindenburg ended up placing Hitler in a position of power, but the Social Democrats supported him as a “lesser evil” to illegal Nazi terror. Thus, the Social Democrats systematically disarmed and disempowered the working class and collaborated with fascism against them. Fascism is an outgrowth of capitalist crisis. At the end of the day, the ruling class wants to remain in power. So when fascism is on the horizon, and it comes time for the ruling class, for the Democratic Party to choose: the capitalists, or the workers? the oligarchs, or the people? white supremacy, or liberation? the Democratic Party and all such institutions will always side with the ruling class against the workers and oppressed." https://lonelyhourreflections.wordpress.com/2017/02/27/no-good-democrats-in-an-imperialist-system/ that was an excerpt, but the whole article stings all to gently caress. makes me wonder if I'm just spinning my wheels.
