God damn it, you've got to be kind.
This morning I emailed the consultant asking him how much of a headcount increase he anticipated if all of his recommendations are put in place. He replied back that he expected 50-100 in the near term, and that we should "understand step function issues." 50-100 would be a 100-250% increase in the size of the company so this is no small thing.

I emailed back asking him how much of this might come from acquiring other companies. That adds complications that I'd like to be prepared for.

He replied "Focus on the here and now, cross bridges when we reach them. I.T. strategy can be responsive."

Does he not recognize that not only is that advice terrible but contradicts his first email? He must understand what a step function is, he used the term in his first reply. They are punishing to reactive strategy, which is essentially no strategy at all.

It's not that the consultant is actually focusing on the here and now, it's that the consultant recommended DT be let go and doesn't respect him.

I got 99 problems but the British ain't one.
So.. it's been about seven years since I was last in a help desk environment, has anything changed recently in regards to T1 creating the tickets and assigning them to T2?

I've got a C level laptop at my desk, hard drive seems to have lost the MBR as far as I can tell, and it's encrypted. Solving this isn't an issue, my issue is that apparently, even though the call came in to T1 and they asked me to check it out, I hosed up by assuming that T1 created a ticket and would assign it to me.

So... yeah, apparently T2 has to create its own tickets here even if the call comes through T1. I think I'm just gonna put on my shades, take a nap at my desk, and stop giving a poo poo at this point. I'm getting out of this temp hell soon enough anyway.

Sooooo my boss just "jokingly" mimed punching me in the stomach, and also fake slapping my female coworker in the face repeatedly (did nothing to my male coworker, who was also standing right there) because we were in line at a food truck and they ran out of what he wanted to eat so he got "mad". He then said "wow, I got you to flinch this time!", acting like it was just a real funny joke. :wtc:

I am trying to :yotj: because he was verbally abusive to me two months back, among other reasons. I...don't really know what I can do about this besides document it and keep looking for a new job. I didn't go to HR when he was verbally abusive because I don't think they would give a poo poo or do anything, and it would only make my life more difficult, and I really don't see anything different with this situation either. Posted my resume to Career Builder and Dice last night and my phone is blowing up with calls from recruiters, which I know can be a mixed bag.

Just needed to write that out, because I'm feeling a bit upset and also slightly guilty thinking I might just be blowing this out of proportion.

Report that poo poo and if there's retaliation, report that as well and then sue if it doesn't stop.

There's zero tolerance for that kind of stuff. If your boss isn't capable of understanding that his behavior isn't appropriate and then tries to take it out on you, you have legal backing to make the organization care.

It is a 100% legitimate reaction to be uncomfortable with your boss pantomiming hitting you, especially if he was verbally abusive in the past. That's hosed and worth talking to HR about, but you know the situation better than we do. Definitely worth GTFO'ing over at the very least.

While I agree with this, years ago when I first started working here I had a coworker who was sexually harassing me. Went to my boss (not same boss that I have now), he said he'd speak with the guy, told me not to go to HR. Boss did nothing, eventually I went to HR. HR then put the guy on a performance improvement plan, made my whole team go to team building sessions with him, and eventually poo poo canned him for a different reason 14 months later.

Now, that was years ago and our HR department has completely turned over a couple times since. But I guess I feel like an/our HR department is there to serve the company's best interests, and not mine.

Even fake physical assault is good for non-fake termination here at my workplace, but it's behavioral healthcare and so is rather more sensitive than, say, Joe & Bubba's House of Happy Hour And Bait Shop.

Responding to a "play" attack with real force is valid, too. "IT loving LOOKED REAL TO ME!" :black101: But I'm a fussy rear end in a top hat like that, having been on the bad end of actual assaults.

HR department is not there for your benefit, it's there for the companies benefit.

So, in your sexual harassment scenario, the HR department was involved (by you) and their first thought is "$Company$ can be sued for this behavior, we need to show we're taking action to correct it" not, sirotan is being harassed, we need to help them feel more safe and comfortable in the workplace.

Usually true.

Now, I do the pantomiming punching people thing, but the difference is I do it to everyone I'm friendly with, not just to women, and I don't do it as part of a faux-anger display. So he seems super out of line.

For my own thing pissing me off today, had someone calling and asking for a mailbox to be added to their account. I asked a few questions, and it sounded like they wanted a new email created and made available for them. Not an uncommon request, so I direct them to the form for that. They call back confused at the form and turns out no, they need access to an existing one. Whoops, my mistake on that one. The part that pisses me off is I told them that we need an email from their supervisor saying it's okay to add them to the permissions and this person fights me on it.

I put my foot down about itand they hang up, only to call back saying that they added it in Outlook but it's saying they can't access the folder. "That's because we need to add you on the back end to the permissions list" "My supervisor said that's not necessary." "He's wrong. Flat out."

Why the hell is this guy fighting me? After that last call I got an email from the supervisor asking to add them to the list. I added them 30 seconds later. It was a one-line email, even if I was somehow incorrect about our policy, was it worth their time fighting it rather than writing the one line? But moreso, why's this rear end in a top hat think he knows policy better than I do. I'm tempted to ask for a sharepoint form to be created for being added to email boxes just to gently caress with people like that.

The bigger takeaway is, the goals are complementary.

That's sort of the point of protected class harassment laws. You report it and they don't do anything about it and/or don't block retaliation, they can be turbo hosed under federal law.

As others have said, HR's job is to look out for the company's best interests. In the case of sexual harassment involving violence, implied or otherwise, HR's job of protecting the company should be dealing with the situation head on and making sure you and your coworkers have no reason to take legal action against the company.

Punching back is entirely appropriate, and it would be a drat shame if your abusive-sounding boss were to pull that on someone who had an automatic good right hook.

<the saga of meanieface is poo poo at finding jobs continues>

I was contacted by a (local) recruiter this morning, we set up plans to have lunch sometime next week after the long phone chat about what I'm doing, why they're calling me suddenly, etc.

Kicker -- they're calling me suddenly because the recruiter is personal friends with my team lead, who's given the recruiter the impression that my job will be outsourced Soon(TM).

Mr. Meanieface said "if we have to" he'd understand if I move hours away and we live apart for a year or so while he catches up later. I'm starting to get super involved in local meetups, hopefully one of these things pans out and I can get employment in a better situation soon.

Write out everything, in detail. Include how it made you feel. Just writing it out should make you feel better, and then you have this nice document ready to drop on HR.

Which you should do, this is bullshit.

Well, this pissed me off so I figure it's suited for the thread. Because man oh man did I not expect to be asked to commit industrial espionage and theft of company assets on my literal first day.

Backstory:

Interned at this place a year ago on their systems team. Helpdesk and (very) basic sysadmin stuff, but it paid pretty well, I enjoyed the work, and it had a great company culture. I just got a full time gig with them, the ink literally isn't even dry on the forms, I got the offer yesterday.

Now, last summer while on the boat party with oodles of free mojitos, I made friends with someone in a different department. We grab dinner and hang out semi-regularly. She left the company a month or two ago, and I made the stupid, stupid mistake of telling her that I was back at work here.

See, she somehow managed to negotiate, as part of her severance, the very fancy Alienware laptop that we had purchased for her and her work. This isn't normally done, but fine, whatever, she negotiated with legal and we're giving her the laptop.

Except she messages me on loving facebook that there are "personal" files on the laptop that she really wants to keep. Obviously, we have to wipe the laptop before we give it to her, a fact which she knows.

So my (soon to be former) friend tries to loving bribe me with "lunch and drink tabs" to bring in an external loving hard drive to get all of the data on her laptop before we wipe it.

What the hell? She's sure as hell not getting that data now.
