Vanity Fair defends their account of the terrible audition process for Cambodian children in Angelina Jolie's new movie First They Killed My Father.

For reference:

quote:

“To cast the children in the film, Jolie looked at orphanages, circuses, and slum schools, specifically seeking children who had experienced hardship. In order to find their lead, to play young Loung Ung, the casting directors set up a game, rather disturbing in its realism: they put money on the table and asked the child to think of something she needed the money for, and then to snatch it away. The director would pretend to catch the child, and the child would have to come up with a lie. ‘Srey Moch [the girl ultimately chosen for the part] was the only child that stared at the money for a very, very long time,’ Jolie says. ‘When she was forced to give it back, she became overwhelmed with emotion. All these different things came flooding back.’ Jolie then tears up. ‘When she was asked later what the money was for, she said her grandfather had died, and they didn’t have enough money for a nice funeral.’”

It really shows how much cheaper and worse the effects folks were when they got a solid two years to do Turtles in Time but the turtles outfits were like noticeably awful compared to the Jim Henson suits in 1 and 2.

Those suits were incredible. I know there's that second where Donatello speaks and you can see the actor's mouth inside the outfit's mouth, but they're still incredible work. Like they were really able to gives those suits a beating, get them wet/submerge them in water for some bits, it's crazy.

Yeah, it's insane how great those suits are. I rewatched the first flick about a year ago and was surprised by how well it held up, effects wise. The second film is obviously of lesser quality, but it's bonkers how good Tokka and Rahzar look considering how little time Jim Henson Studios had to put them together.

Speaking of turnaround, one of the grossest things about Delta Force was that it was released less than a year after the events of the TWA Flight 847 hijacking occurred, which it almost entirely was based on. That would be like coming out with a movie about Chuck Norris infiltrating and blowing up a religious compound like seven months after the Waco siege ended.

Also, I'm really disappointed they went with that angle for the Death Wish remake, unrelatedly. I think you could get something very good out of, essentially, flipping the script racially, and making the protagonist a black guy who fights dirty cops and Nazi gangs rather than a white guy who guns down minorities.

I was really, really hoping for a Death Wish remake with Denzel Washington as Kersey, just as a wonderful bookend for his career.

Speaking of Muslim militants, do you ever feel that Bend It Like Beckham or Footloose could use a terrorist threat subplot? Because I'm a bit amused by this Malaysian movie synopsis:

quote:

Adele, a talented young dancer, lives to full her mother’s dream of becoming a renowned ballerina. Awarded a scholarship for a world-class Russian ballet school, she is on her way to great success, until a traumatic experience prompts her to make a life-changing decision that was already in the forefront of her mind. Adele takes the hijab, claiming she will become the best muslim ballerina. Her mother is heartbroken, her friends are confused and both the ballet scene and the muslim community reject her. Worse still, as word of her ambition spreads she faces serious threat from Jihadi fundamentalists.

In the comments for that trailer link someone has spoiled the entire film.

Don't mouse over this if you have a burning desire to not have it spoiled:

quote:

I saw this movie illegally and basically the premise is that one of the two sisters (We'll call her Beep) throws the other sister's wedding ring (we'll call her Bop) into the pool because she believes it's not a stable marriage. Bop finds her wedding ring stuck in the filter screen at the bottom of the deep end when the pool is about to close, Beep helps Bop out to retrieve the ring with no success, the pool inspector person doesn't see them at the bottom of the pool and closes the cover which is made out of strong glass. Beep and Bop are now stuck underneath this pool cover for 3 days without food, water, or sleep. We find out that Bop is diabetic and doesn't have her insulin with her meaning she'll pass out in a coma and drown. The night janitor (We'll call her Bloop) appears to do poo poo and stuff only to find Bop's phone ringing. Bloop who has a criminal record blackmails Beep and Bop to give Bop's identity to her or they won't let her out. Bop gives her the info and pleads for Bloop to let them out. Beep becomes a bit mentally unstable and tricks Bloop to put her ear to a tiny hole they're communicating through. Once Bloop's ear is aligned with the hole Beep stabs her with a shard of the glass that broke off. Bloop gets angry and turns on the chlorine bacterial disinfectant which fills up the tank and makes it hard to breathe then they die and Bloop is free with her name as Beep.

The end, I'm not kidding. This movie was bad.

Panty shots is a metonym for "fetish outfits" in this case. it's more about how Emily Browning slicing people up with a katana while wearing a schoolgirl outfit makes people feel uncomfortable because she looks like she's 12 and therefore like an anime character. That's what the specific objection is, anyway.

I've never read the Dark Tower books, but centering it around a (probably) precocious kid instead of Idris Elba seems like a mistake. Who keeps asking for child protagonists unless it's like, a YA story (in which case they would still hire 30 year olds to play 17 year olds).

I'm not going to see the film because it looks like poo poo, But in the book the man in black taunts Roland as Jake is hanging from the railroad bridge in a tunnel. Basically "you can save him or get me", and Roland chooses to let Jake fall to his death so he can continue to chase the Man in Black. I doubt the film is going to do that for various reasons.

One of those reasons being he already did it in the books and Man In Black is still alive so this time Roland is probably going to do things differently.

A goon said their problem with it was something like "all the cinematic elements are RIGHT THERE, and they seem to purposefully change things that would be good on-screen". I kind of agree with that reading. Subverted tropes are good and stuff, but the book is metafiction and a pretty straightforward and condensed story that they seem to muck up.

No. It's also not an adaption of The Gunslinger, it's an awkward hybrid of events from all of the books and it has a pretty final ending.
