Well, the best stuff you can afford without grinding. You're right before the point where the difficulty just kinda crumples apart so grinding's a waste anyway.

I just started playing the PS4 version yesterday.
It looks gorgeous, but after playing Zelda BotW, it's utterly frustrating not being able to go anywhere/everywhere.

I may have to download the 3DS version and play it in the old-school 16-bit style.

Not gonna lie the 3ds version looks pretty bad

There are plenty of sprite based DQs that probably play exactly the same and I'm concerned that the two formats into one thing means that the gameplay is going to be limited and dull.

I mean its DQ so the gameplay is already very basic but without the allure of delicious current standards graphics, I'd have a lot of trouble getting excited over yet another sprite based DQ game.

So PS4 it shall be

PS4 version has too much graphics, makes it hard to see enemies on screen when there's so much detail. I'd rather play the low poly version which is much clearer. Plus, DQ games don't feel right in other platforms. It's pretty much a Nintendo exclusive franchise at this point.

I've decided to start playing through all the DQ games on iOS. Blew through 1, almost done with 2. People weren't kidding about the difficulty spike near the end. I know abusing quick saves goes against the spirit of the game but man, gently caress you and your insta-kill spells and heal-alls...

hey more power to you but playing DQ8 on release was incredible, I don't wanna speak for all DQ fans but I always thought that the idea of exploring a world full of toriyama's art in high fidelity has long been an out of reach fantasy for many fans

I feel that super high fidelity graphics + old school mega dated turn based combat make for a very charming combination

DQ8 was and still is incredible

Yeah, 2 is the worst DQ mainline game and it really isn't close. I have a strange affinity for it that I know 100 percent is nostalgia fueled because as a child it seemed so vast and huge compared to DQ1. It really captured my imagination.

But objectively its designed extremely poorly.

Is DQ2 on IOS closer to the NES game or the Super Famicom remake? The reason I ask is that I have played both; I found the former to be a poo poo-covered example of bad, frustrating game design while the latter was a solid if unspectacular RPG but one that didn't make me want to commit atrocities.

It's the mobile port that was made after the SNES remake. It has some quality-of-life improvements, in particular a quick save slot that makes the last few battles way more tolerable.

2 is just poorly designed all-around. There was lots of experimentation going around at the time, so most of everything ends up being vastly over-tuned. The end game is especially bad, and a speed run on the original version can take anywhere from 4 to 7 hours just because of how cheap the last few bosses are and how much luck you need in the end game normally, let alone at a low level. The SFC and newer versions aren't as bad, you can get through them quite rapidly due to the more balanced leveling.

I remember in the original, Hagure Metals are like the hardest enemy in the game and give lousy EXP.

The actual translation work is 95+% done, but there are catastrophic problems with the way the game is coded that are causing overflows with the addition of longer text, so until a workaround is figured out, the progress is a bit roadblocked. I'm not too savvy to the technical details, but I know there are many people searching for a workaround that are constantly frustrated at how it is turning out.

It'll see the light of day sooner or later, hopefully sooner. It just takes one breakthrough really.

I played the poo poo out of dq1 when I was a kid, them dq2 put me of the franchise entirely until I played 8.

I came to call any rpg where they give you a boat and tell you nothing about where to go or what you're supposed to do when you get there "Dragon Warrior 2 Syndrome." It's disturbing how many games for that description.

As much as I despise DQ2 on the NES (I thought that the SFC version was pretty good, however) while adoring 3 and having never seriously played 4, I have this unusual fondness for DQ1 despite freely admitting that it's not a very good game. It has minimal content and is virtually all grind, but I love the enemy sprites and always think of it fondly.

That game could use a lot of improvements, but one that I always wish for is that there be a mid-level heal in that game. You get Heal very early on but it becomes outdated after a level levels while Healmore is great up through level 30 but isn't received until level 17. I've always thought that that game would be better with "Healmore" at about level 8-10, with that spell between the two existing spells in terms of potency. Then, have the level 17 spell be called Healmost which is functionally identical to Healmore as it exists. The "Hurt" spells could probably use a similar rebalancing, but Hurtmore as is becomes pointless if you level up into the 20s because your melee attack ends up just as good while costing bugger all.

Not really. You can do a lot more damage to them in 2 compared to the rest of the series, at high levels, at least. Hero and Cannock hitting one together is typically a kill. They give 1050 xp and 255 gold each, which is about on par with an average end-game battle. The problem is they run away and can cast Firebane.

I think the GBC did as well. It did not take it away from the third of the castle's mini-bosses though which resulted in it being probably a harder fight than the final boss :argh:

Scholars are some of the most pompous and pedantic people I've ever had the joy of meeting.
The only saving grace in the original DQ2 is the bug that lets you swap a falcon sword and sword of destruction so that you hit twice per turn with the attack of the sword and none of its cursed RNG bullshit.

You just have to get a Sword of Destruction drop in the first place.

I played in the closed beta for Rivals, it was a total Hearthstone rip only you couldn't turn off the animations and it took forever to play a game, plus it ran like crap on my Kindle Fire. I would probably put a lot of time into it if it were in English and I could run it on a better device.

Yeah I hadn't heard of it before, and I guess they're talking about it now in the stream Builders was announced. I guess it's been out for a couple months, but I don't know what they're saying at all or if they're announcing anything new about it.

It was a 2 week closed beta back in June and then they went back to developing on it. Basically the only tweet from the Rivals account since the beta closed was about the stage presentation that I assume they are doing right now. And I guess they have stations at that event people can play try the game on. I'd be interested in hearing what they've updated since the beta. My feedback survey answers were speed up the game, let me turn off animations, make a Windows version, and make an English version.

I'm playing it on 3DS. I stuck one of those dashboard phone mount things to my desk to hold my phone with Google Translate open so I can just point it at my 3DS screen while I play. It's navigable. I'm only level 11 with 8 hours though because I don't have that much time to play each day and it does feel like a bit of work to translate it that way.

Language shouldn't be too big a deal, but that aside is it fun? I noticed that you can switch between active movement and old school turn-based battle styles, so I'm thinking it might make a good gift for someone who's only played (but loved) Dragon Quest III.

On the 3DS version you can switch between 3D DQ8 graphics and 2D sprites, but the battles are always turn based. Don't know about PS4 and the real time thing. I think it's fun but it's also very easy. The battles run fast and the auto-battle makes it faster, so you end up over leveling a bit and the difficulty is not that high. May get harder later but I haven't really heard that, especially for the first half of the game at least.
