A $5 mic shield - I like to call them pop filter cages - tend to be what's used and gets it done just fine. I've only seen RØDE's slightly different pop filter that goes with one of their mics. I haven't noticed them changing voice audio for the worse.

You just put it in front of the mic and attach it to the mic with elastic bands, it's pretty effortless.

Goose neck pop filters are a pain, take up a lot of space, and are only really good for mics with fixed stands or situations where you don't move too much like radio and interviews.

It's easier to read text in taller, narrower columns than wide, short columns, so my guess is those are for display of documents / scripts or something else that is being read. Back in the day all the print designers I knew kept their monitors that way for designing books / magazine layout.


Now I eagerly await being proven wrong.

ha, i knew that would get a reaction out of you guys...

i'm not running a consolidated desktop since this is for work (unified displays are more a thing for games), and having a bunch of stuff in portrait makes sense for my workflow (crap ton of excel windows open or doing dev work).

doing dev work for example, i can easily partition the wall of displays in front of me:


vertical is really good for code or documents:


if i'm working on something more horizontal minded, say a large database, i can always span across multiple panels.

the caveat is that it's non-standard, so you want to get good ips panels (which the ones in the previous pic aren't) otherwise it's basically impossible to balance colors, never mind calibrate them. since i mostly do boring spreadsheet stuff at home, i don't really care about colors, but i might have to do print stuff once in a blue moon at the office, so i have better panels there:


i'll eventually try one or two superwide displays, but the whole 3x1p thing has worked well for me for about a decade so i'm not in a hurry.

This is going to sound very stupid, I have Reaper and Audacity - I just need to change the tuning of a song from D to Eb, which I guess is a % pitch shift but I'm finding it hard to figure out what to even search for to figure out how to do it! Any help?

its super easy, select a sound event and hit f2, there's a pitch adjust there. doing it globally will be possible as well, but idk how off hand.

If the pitch shifting sounds like poo poo, you should be able to adjust the playback rate instead with preserve pitch unchecked, though this will change the tempo along with it. Some maths may be required to translate number of semitones to the percentage type number playback rate expects though.

like i mentioned originally, my newly bought mic is going in a smoking office, so i want to put a foam windscreen on it to catch most of the crap in the air. the only problem is that the part i need is hilariously overpriced:

i don't get it, their other foams are around the $10-$15 mark, but it is what it is i guess. the lowest price i found for this was around $35, which is still something i can't mentally reconcile.

i found the rode ws2 at $20 that seems like it would fit, anything else i should look at?

Yes, of course. Tracking is kind of merciless in revealing flaws. Reaper has very nice take handling, though I don't understand it well enough to describe it succinctly, have a look at the documentation.

A cute trick is just multi track stuff, and play multiple takes together, fiddling with the levels so it sounds good to you. you can also just drop the volume on the bad notes. If you have like four almost perfect takes then feel free to combine them into a single beautiful frankentake.

I find when I've got something that is nearly there it can be good to just have it on repeat in the background while I'm doing something else - if nothing irritates you on multiple listens, it's probably in an ok state.

Comping is a very common practice in studios, especially with vocals but guitar too. There was a recent article on Metallica in Sound on Sound where effectively Kirk just widdles/improvises, they pick the bits they want then chop it up into order.

Like others said, comping takes is super common. I don't think I've ever laid down a whole track in one take, I always flub something at least once no matter how well I know it. A trick I've developed is to just lay down 5 or 6 takes one right after another, making mental notes of my flubs in each one so I can really focus on the few bars around it in the next take. By the time I get to the last take, my playing is relaxed and free of major flubs and I know that any minor issues have at least one good take somewhere. Saves a lot of time relistening to takes and punching stuff compared to what I was doing before.

If you're using programmed drums, dont be afraid to shift the occasional hit forward or back a few ticks either, will make it sound more 'real'. An old trick N.E.R.D. ises to do was program kick and snare on the grid then tap in the hi hats to make it more human. I don't really like them but I use that technique a lot. Your off-timeness will be much more noticeable against a totally rigid backing track. Alternatively turn off grid snapping and draw the beats in as close to the grid as you can without being mega-anal about it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make doubled guitars not sound like poo poo in mono? I have two guitars, a Strat with single coil pickups and an ESP with humbuckers. I like to record a take with each one and pan them hard right/left. They both run through the same amp, but I EQ them a little different and also vary the playing so that they're not always both playing the exact same thing. It's awesome in stereo, but as soon as I test it in mono it sounds way thinner than it should and really just kind of awful in general. I'm still not that great at mixing so I'm unsure of what I can do that would help without affecting the stereo sound too much.

don't pan them hard left/right if you want a doubled sound, I'd maybe try having them both centre or just off, put some subtle reverb on each one and pan that left/right. also have a send that compresses both parts, then you can play with the level on that to find a mix that glues the parts together.

After looking for a long while for an affordable desk that is meant for music production, I finally settled on this one:

I always pan them hard left/right and make a reverb channel for left&right and send the panned guitars to the other, pure reverbed side. I usually get pretty beefy sound with it :)

This is probably more along the lines of a guitar post, but hopefully fits more relevantly here because it's about songs particularly. I've started to cultivate something of an ear: I can't always grab chords and progressions, but generally can hit power chords in the rough shape of what I'm hearing more often than not. I have two issues (just two? HA!)

1) I can't always be sure of what tuning the song is in and I'd rather not rely on looking it up. Any shortcuts on this? As a rule of thumb I tend to assume any rock/guitar based songs are in A/F#m, C/Am, F/Dm, or G/Em m - essentially widdling my way in the major/minor pentatonic of each of these keys. Motley Crue (the focus of my most recent escapade) plays some songs in D standard, Lynch Mob in Eb standard. This means my four keys are now twelve. I can't keep this method up - so there must be a simpler way? It presents a very big problem when we have...

2) Non-power chords. The middle section of 'Dream Warriors' by Dokken has chord fragments all over the place. There are palm muted staccato passages which clearly are 'big' chord shapes. Any tips on this would be great.

For your first question, are you referring to the tuning of the guitar or the key of the song?

For tuning, the first thing to listen for is the lowest note the guitar plays in the song. If it's lower than your E string, you can try to match the note in a higher octave and find what you have to tune down to. Not every song that uses a lower tuning actually plays those notes though, sometimes it's just because the chords or riffs are easier to fret from a different position. For example, if the song you're trying to play has a lot of stretching from fret 4 on the A string to fret 1 on the D string, consider that tuning half a step down would instead allow you to just go from open to fret 2 on the D string. You said you're playing scale patterns over the songs? If you don't want to tune down, just find a pattern that's further up the neck.

Without being familiar with the song in #2, the best thing to do is just slow it down and work your way through the finger movements you need to make to hit all of the notes. If something feels awkward, experiment and see if there's any other way you can position your fingers to make it easier to go through the riff. If there's a really good quality live video of the song, you can sometimes make out at least an idea of what the guitarist is doing as well.

I don't really have any experience recording acoustic, but there was a cool Q&A with John Leckie where he described recording Rodrigo y Gabriela, if you're into that kinda sound. Try recording the guitar using a couple different mic positions and then stack the tracks on top of each other with some panning. Probably could add a Reverb bus for the guitar tracks and play with the Send Amount as well.

OK so getting lowest note by trying to hit E, Eb or D and seeing which matches works. TY!

With regard to the second note, what I mean is that if someone is playing a open/barre/power chords it's not a big issue to figure it out. Take the most recent song I'm trying to learn however, where I had to resort to tabs "Round and Round" by Ratt. The main riff is diads around the high end of position 1 and 2 of the minor pentatonic, rather than chords, i.e.


and a little bridge section has something spread out as well:


I'm not disputing that this just someone's tab and they might be laid out differently - but I have massive trouble trying to figure that kind of melody out since it doesn't fall under 6th/5th note root stuff.

Here's my thinking on how I would place my fingers for the first half of the first bit:

Play the power chord like normal. While the open E is going, move so that your middle finger is at 8 on the B string and your index/ring finger are on the G string at 7 and 9 respectively. You hit the (8b/9G) chords, then take your ring finger off to hit the (8b/7G)s. Slide your middle finger down to hit the (7b/7G), then your index to 5 for (7b/5G). End by sliding your middle one last time to (5b/5G), then jumping your index finger to 3 on the A string for the rhythm bit. You can also use your index, ring, and pinky instead of index, middle, and ring fingers so that you won't be stretching your hand out as much.

I don't know how much sense that makes since I've never tried to articulate how to play anything beyond tabs/chords, but hopefully you get the idea. The best thing to do is just focus on finding the smoothest way to move from one chord to the next.

Ah okay, I misunderstood your question. If I were learning that song by ear, I would probably just listen carefully to each chord fragment over and over with my guitar until I could single out each individual note being played. You may have trouble with this right now, but it's just something you develop over time. Not exactly the most exciting thing to do but it works. If you have a program that lets you loop a section of a track that's helpful so you don't have to keep clicking back.

Sometimes you won't get it exactly right, but most tabs you'd look up online were made by people doing the same thing. Popular songs will have like 10 different versions on Ultimate Guitar with minor differences between them, it's just how the person who made it interpreted the song. This is another place where good quality live videos can help, because you might be able to see where the guitarist is fretting the notes you're hearing.

Hey guys. New to this forum. Just looking for a recommendation here. I'm using FL Studio Producer Edition. I'm in the market for an audio interface and (idk) I'm trying to find one that won't give me any weird problems with FL. Nothing worse than buying some new equipment to find out it has compatibility issues with your favorite software.

I'm not looking for anything too crazy right now, a single 1/4" jack will work fine, I have two electrics, a bass and a guitar but I'll be working alone most of the time and probably can't afford any expensive models at the moment ^_^;;

Looks dope but I just thought of something. Right now I'm using a set of speakers + subwoofer that connects to my PC using a single 1/8" jack. Eventually I'm gonna upgrade to studio monitors so is that single line output gonna be enough?

Damnit this is so complicated.

How do I connect two studio monitors to a laptop? gently caress.

Edit: I also have an HDTV hooked up through an HDMI cord. Is it possible to hook up both monitors to that as is? Or is there something else going on here... Still wanna know how to hook them up to my laptop just in case the tv breaks or some poo poo. So now this is like 3 questions in one post -_-''

you could also out from the back rca connectors, but that would likely involve two parts (rca->1/8" then 1/8"->2x1/8" or something similar), depends on where the cables are convenient for you. you can find these things anywhere (including walmart or whatever big box store, if you don't have a local shop).
