Quick question about confidants: when I get a message that "I don't think my realtionship with [someone] will grow any deeper", does it mean that the next rank is gated behind a story event or a specific date (and that I shouldn't hang out with these people), or just that my relationship will progress, but not by a full rank (so I should still hang out with these people)?

It doesn't necessarily mean you're being story gated. More likely is that you haven't hit enough points with said person to rank up with them. Sojiro 4->5 is probably the only big story gate I can think of, but you're probably going to have to spend a few days on hangouts like that to get enough points to eventually hit the next rank.

Not really. It's not a very good Etrian Odyssey game because the game balance is hosed and the dungeon design is atrocious, and it's not a very good Persona game because the plot/character writing ends up being kinda bleh this time around.

Q is fine even without abusing Fuuka or Naoto. You can even do it without sub-Personas (not on the hardest difficulties though I think). Some characters are clearly weaker than others (hi Teddie) but as far as a fun romp with some nice interactions, it's alright.

And the music is pretty solid.

Fuuka? I'd always heard Rise was the broken one. Whatever. Naoto made the random encounters a breeze and Kanji handled everything else.

Fuuka is effectively free, unlimited healing without eating up turns and lets your physical dudes fight pretty much forever. Rise's cute but if your team already has lots of fast guys then Spotlight isn't nearly as useful, and her other skills are kinda expensive.

Outside of Kanji and Naoto I rotated in primarily magic users so I don't generally think they were that physical based. I also just generally didn't need the healing because Naoto was killing everything and turn priority seemed hella useful.

e: Also I was never ever going to use Oracle

If their icon on the fast travel map is blue, you just need more points to rank, which you get by hanging out. If it's grey, talking to them will tell you what stat gate to need to reach.

You never use Fuuka's higher-tier skills (unless you really need that emergency heal now). You just use her first-rank skill whenever it's off cooldown and you can easily rebuild it in the 3 turns it's in play. Physical is also way stronger in Q than magic (which is heavily handicapped by SP unless you're abusing Rise's skills hard), due to Fuuka easily replenishing it and the ability to get some absurd chains/crits going with Myriad Arrows.

Magic is still usable especially if you're backing it up with a Naoto/Ken, but in all honesty the potential is a lot weaker.

Hey, I heard that once you finish Palace 5 you can't do Mementos for the rest of the timer because Haru isn't with you. Does this happen any other times? Alternatively, am I misinformed, because that seems like a really weird thing to do.

You can do it just fine, it's more that some of the requests you might get during that time (most notable one is Futaba's Confidant I think) are locked behind the section of Mementos that won't open up til after the deadline.

Basically from the Destinyland trip to around the start of the Casino, you can't go to Mementos because the Phantom Thieves as a group need to collectively agree on targets before going to change their hearts. You can go between finishing the 5th palace and the Destinyland trip, you'll have a full party, but after that, Haru's working through poo poo and can't make it to PT meetings.

I think if you don't have any requests, you can probably go, but if you do have any, you need to go over them before you can go in, but during that time frame, you can't go over requests, so you can't go at all.

So I finally got around to playing this game after stealing it from my boyfriend. I'm midway through the second palace and so far I'm loving it. I'm kinda resigning myself to doing a +ng playthrough to max out all the confidants since I don't see myself doing it in one go.

But I figured I'd still ask about some good advice for a first run through.

Are there any confidants or skills I should be focusing on leveling over others?

Similarly, are there any Personas I should be working towards that are more useful than others?

Also is there a writeup breaking down how the various arcana relate to their respective characters?

I was going to ask about that too. A couple of them are understandable, like the Hermit Arcana being linked to Futaba, and the Justice Arcana being linked to Akechi, but others don't seem quite as straight-forward, which makes me curious if they make more sense the further you progress with their Confidant rankings.

Confidants that I would get up as soon as possible, the criterion being "how do I get to experience the most content in a single playthrough": Fortune (rank 7 ASAP, everything after that at your leisure), Temperance (MAX) and Death (rank 7 ASAP). In that order. In the spoilers I've set which ranks are the most important ones to reach, but I understand if you don't want that spoiled. Note that it's really not a difficult or hard game to max out the things you want to do, but these three confidants in particular allow you to multitask better, allowing you to effectively squeeze in a few extra days/nights in your playthrough: the earlier you get them, the better.

After that, there are certain confidants that give you skill points as you advance them. They are important in no particular order save the skills you want to improve, but it is better to do them sooner rather than later to prevent maxing out a skill with time-consuming activities and then doing a confidant that would have improved that skill anyway. These are Sun, Death, Hanged Man, Tower, Devil and... I think Hierophant?

With regards to the skills, which order you do them in has no particular importance. Just focus on evenly spreading it out over the course of the game because it likes to spring sudden skill gates in confidants for you every now and then. That's the only real importance they have. I think knowledge levels slower than the others so in doubt you should lean towards that if it's lagging behind.

But don't stress it: it's not a difficult game and you can coast through it. Make sure you always have something to read on the train, do activities that cost cash on days they provide extra benefits for you, drink your juice every sunday, feed your plant the most expensive soil you can find every 2 weeks or so. If you stick to those rules of thumb you'll max out your stats like 2/3rds through the game. Proficiency is kind of difficult to level but you can only craft tools on the night before you send a calling card so do that then.

There are no particularly important Personas, but the Strength arcana asks you to provide them with specific persona/skill combinations which incidentally are excellent for the palace around their level. Trumpeter is a cool late-game persona because it gets debilitate easily, which is a top tier skill. Yoshitsune breaks the game over his knee and while that's funny, it's also not really necessary. You can get by with every other persona by fusing often and trying to cover all the bases so joker can fill in for any role/weakness in a pinch.

There's a writeup on the megami tensei wiki pages of the relevant arcanas I think, but the wiki is full of spoilers so don't touch it until you're done.

In addition to what other people said, physical repel personas are rad as gently caress but you don't need to work towards them. They are valuable beyond their level as a shield against physical heavy bosses and enemies since MC death is game over, the lowest level one I believe is Shiki-Ouji. Shiki-Ouji, Arahabaki, Rangda, Girimehkala etc. Girimehkala will get you the Repel Phys skill so you can fuse it onto anything else to get the same properties.
Sun confidant is useful for negotiations and earning more money but the 3 that the last poster mentioned are the most important.

You can get Shiki-Ouji as early as palace 2, so yep, he's what I grabbed and he absolutely trivialized a bunch of encounters.

I can probably do it, but it'd probably have a bunch of spoiler tags so it'd belong in the spoiler thread. I guess I can do a general idea of the overall premise of each non-story Confidant and how it's linked to the Arcana?

It's not overly difficult to connect how the Confidants go to previous members of the Arcana. Like Makoto has already made her resolution to stop being guided by the expectations of other people, and her Confidant is about what she does about that after her resolution. Similar to her fellow Priestess members Fuuka and Yukiko. Or how Sojiro is like the other Hierophants (Dojima and the Bookstore couple) with moving on from their past.

There are a few Arcana where the SLs seem to blur into each other - Hanged Man links tend to be quite similar to Hierophant ones, for example.

I wouldn't break your back trying to get through Palaces in one run. SP is fairly scarce, especially at the beginning of the game. Also none of them can be done in a single game day.

The first palace is really the only one that will kick the poo poo out of you like that, everything else paces nicely to complete in the mandatory minimum number of days.

Mostly because the first palace has you going in with level 3 characters, and no ways to refill SP at all, so trying to do it in one day means you'll be stuck with however much SP a level 3 character gets for the entire palace. You'll normally end the palace around level 10-12, so yeah. Don't do that.

All but two can be done in a single day, those two being Madarame's and Sae's. Unless you count the days beyond your control, like the initial infiltration is usually story-based so you don't decide when it happens, and sending the calling card to take the heart is a whole day in itself. But the meat of each palace can be done in one well prepared run through.

Am I doing something wrong? I feel like I'm underleveled, both because the "average level" people seem to be according to the Guild (the touch pad thing) is a couple of levels above mine and because every time I get a new character, they are also a few levels above mine. It seems a bit weird because I ran through the entirety of the first 2 palaces after sending the calling cards (instead of starting at the last safe room) and I'm mostly up do date in mementos, so I'm wondering if people are wasting days of sweet, precious studying in a diner in order to kill random poo poo in mementos, especially since levels only seem useful as a way to get more (and more powerful) personas.

I would've thought that power gamers would be eating humongus burgers and shadowing a lovely politician instead of trying to level up.

Power Gamers usually are underlevelled because they know how to win fights without needing to grind and are spending the minimum number of days in palaces / mementos. The average level isn't power gamers, it's folks playing casually without following a guide or trying to do a max confidant / all achievements run.

That explains half of it, but I still get new characters at a level above what my MC's (or the rest of my team's) is. Maybe it's just the game throwing me a freebie and giving me Mafrei before I get Mabufu.

The game almost always forces you to use new characters in a miniboss battle as soon as you get them, so it's reasonable for it to be a bit generous with their initial levels.

Also I'm not sure whether it was ever determined if NG+ players' levels are included in the network averages? Those would obviously drag the average up now that the game has been out for a while.

I was actually way lower during my Ng+ run due to skipping way more trash fights.

Yeah I think i was a bit lower than the average until I did some Mementos. I'd say people are grinding to get Personas etc.
