Anyone know what kind of lifecycle Paraodox expects for games such as CK2? I just wonder at what point where they will decide that the DLCs are enough and that they should just focus on developing a new game.

Wouldn't surprise me if Paradox did a new Asia focused IP seeing how Asia is their primary focus for expansion or at least it was before the IPO according to the presentation by Fredrik Wester which I attended. At least it seems that way since Paradox are working on getting their games on Tencent's plattform and Tencent owns about 5 % of Paradox.

When they stop making a profit on a game's DLCs.

I wouldn't expect a CK3 announcement until are least 2019 or 2020, considering there's still some DLC to come and that game will have a long tail.

iIRC, paradox had said they were going to release like 3 more dlcs for CK2 and that was prior to M&M. There was supposed to be a major one, and a minor WoL type expansion. I don't know if they are still sticking to that plan though.

Yep - http://www.moddb.com/mods/romance-of-the-three-kingdoms Just download and run the exe from moddb and then select the Sanguo mod from the launcher.

It's a really well done and professional mod with new music, a great map of China, different start dates and all your favourite characters from Liu Bei to Sun Ce. I seriously doubt Paradox could have done better themselves.

thanks link fixed.

It's funny how besides CK2, I preety much play Paradox games for the mods. I got Stellaris for the Star Trek mod, and I got HOI4 for Kaissereich. Still haven't touched my EU4.

They decided they needed to force DH onto HOI IV, that includes something like ten different ideologies (which means that social democrats hate social conservatives as much as communists hate fascists), the inability to make alliances outside of events due to the former point and garrison and militia unit types.

I'm tired of following my dreams, I'm just gonna ask where they're goin' and meet up with 'em there.

Honestly the only big issue I have is how they've managed to hammer a square peg through a round hole with stability mechanics instituted in the dumbest way possible.

It's good but if it actually used HoIIV's mechanics it'd be great. Also maybe some consistency between countries' focuses.

Could've just... not insisted on making the fine differences between Autocracy and National Populism into a key gameplay mechanic that required significant changes to the vanilla game? You could make a totalist and an anarcho-syndicalist regime both be communist syndicalist in-game and differentiate them with some NF-triggered ideas or something.

There's so much complexity in KR4 that could boiled down into something simpler that gels with vanilla HoI4 mechanics. Like, with France, you could've set up the focus tree to be like:

The fuckhuge chain of votes for different ministerial roles and factional infighting could be turned into a straightforward this-or-that line in the focus tree, with the totalist/anarchist/orthodox syndicalist character of the new government formed by ideas and modifiers added in by focuses, rather than completely redoing ideology. That eliminates hours of work on event-writing (and re-writing and tweaking as patches and new development ideas come and go) and makes a much simpler system that regular players of vanilla can grapple with more easily. Nothing needed to be radically reinvented!

I have three regrets
The first is to be born in Joseon.
I have noticed (in EU4 mods at least) there's a tendency for modders to try to make whole new systems via the flexible but clunky event system rather than trying to significantly re-purpose base DLC mechanics and stuff. Then they often either just cut the DLC stuff out or give it some slightly modified tacked on use. I get that the event system gives more control but it just feels suuper inelegant compared to what modders could be doing.

Yeah it's awful design. KR4 is an absolute masterclass in terrible modding decisions, Apres Moi is the KR we deserve.

One focus tree for all nations, with variants! Same effect as KR but a)far quicker to make b) far easier to balance c) not completely nuts

I agree with your general point, but it has to be said that repurposing existing mechanics might not always be that easy. Maybe Paradox has opened EU4 up in that regard recently, but I do recall running into quite a few cases of not being able to repurpose existing mechanics because they were nearly entirely confined to the .exe itself - and I don't think I was being super ambitious in what I wanted to do. The same held true for a lot of other modders from what I could tell.

That said, given that the core idea of Kaiserreich is an alternate setting, not something like "Realistic Supply, Warfare and Extermination Mod", it does seem really weird to not attempt to rethink the setting from the perspective of making it work within the vanilla system - which almost seems designed specifically to make Kaiserreich really easy to port.

It's actually really good and gives you flexibility, unlike KR4 where most of the South America trees are dependent on the AI picking/not picking socialism within the first two months of the game.

Mantis42
Jul 26, 2010

Focus trees are one of the more interesting parts of HoI4's design. If the game requires a country to be a specific ideology, maybe just don't give it focuses that affect that? Seems like throwing the baby out with the bathwater by making it generic.

Fuligin
Oct 27, 2010

wait what the fuck??

Apres Moi's focus trees are generic with small tailored additions to the majors, and some variants (leftist tags and the chinese ones get their own generic trees, for example). It's flexible, works well, and still makes nations feel like they have their own identity. Kaiserreich's approach is madness by comparison.

I feel bad enough for the two ideologies the Vic2 to HoI4 converter adds, I can't imagine adding as many as they did.
