you know, 9 years ago these forums were jam packed with obamatars. probably as many as all the DSA/bernietars and all the real+ironic trumptars combined. some good poo poo got done in the 2 years the dems had congressional supermajorities, but even that was a slog thanks to blue dog dems. the problem is you'll never get 60 senate seats that are ideologically pure. hell, it was really loving close, but the GOP can't even get 51 votes to agree on an ocare repeal bill, and they've been pounding that drum for 7 years and taken billions in donor cash promising to get it done.

if bernie or some protege of his ever manages to be elected president y'all are gunna be sooooo disappointed with political reality, and in exactly the same way as the trumpanzees who were expecting their guy to just executive order the country back to the 1950s

stay passionate about politics and don't give up on progress, but also temper your expectations or you'll get frustrated and bitter and tune out. personally i think theres a shitload of local work to do in red states before you can expect major shifts in national politics.

(also, not every incrementalist democrat is lazy or crooked or whatever. a lot of them just don't try to push what they don't think can currently get passed. maybe they're correct and politically savvy; maybe they're just gutless and out of touch with today's voters, in which case you can prove them wrong! either way, those guys can still be helpful allies in a coalition)

I hope the "poor" refers to deserving of sympathy (sarcastically) rather than to income. Farmers, particularly those who also rely on undocumented labor, supporting trump is just the both insane thing to me. The idea that some inherited wealth rear end in a top hat from NYC is going to understand the needs of some inherited wealth rear end in a top hat from Fresno or Iowa is laughable. Farms rely on three things:
1. Cheap labor with no questions asked
2. Free trade
3. Government subsidies in various forms (from cash to crop insurance to cheap water)

Trump basically claimed to be against most of those things, though he played a bit of lip service to 3. Yet, these assholes vote for the dude who is going to lower their taxes (maybe) and allow them to pollute all their water.

Jesus, I don't know if I can help you on this one.

60 votes are usually needed to pass new poo poo, broheim. Calvinball 51 vote parlimentarian games are relatively new.

the only reason Obummercare passed is because it was the gop's own concept in the beginning, and once fourteen months of vetting and editing had wrapped up, major healthcare insurers and providers were pushing for it on both sides of the aisle.

Literally the only problem with obamacare was the fact the prez was a black commie socialist scary guy. The collective GOP media and party could not abide the optics of supporting an Obama policy win.

like 2 years of the civil war and 2 years of world war 2 were based upon the asshat sides' refusal to recognize that they had done crazy terrible things
because they had done crazy terrible things
I mean, they wouldn't condone the idea that slavery was a bad thing because it would mean actually apologizing for it and regretting it or stuff
so they died. en masse. hundreds of thousands in orgies of slaughter two years after everyone knew they lost
same deal with killing the jews and massacring the chinese and raping the koreans

so 100%, idiots will literally die in the most painful possible way rather than apologize for anything

"budget reconciliation" is what lets the republicans try to do certain things with 51 votes, and one reason their repeal bill was such a shitshow was that they wrote the bill around those constraints, and even then a good chunk of what they put in there was put in for show, knowing that it was being stripped out for failing those rules. for example, defunding planned parenthood was stripped out right before the vote bc it didn't meet those rules.

back in 2010 democrats were able to finish the process of passing the ACA using reconciliation because the basic bill was already passed through normal methods with 60 votes (before ted kennedy died). they only needed to use the 59-vote reconciliation threshold to tie up loose ends. they absolutely could not have passed the ACA from scratch with < 60 votes. the GOP might be able to tear down poo poo in a half-assed manner with 51 votes, but you absolutely cannot create new and durable government programs that way. so go ahead, pass some half-assed single payer with 51 votes that isn't actually funded, and watch it fail miserably and turn the public off of the whole idea.

decades ago most legislation only took 51 votes because the filibuster was viewed as the nuclear option. should the filibuster be killed once and for all? maybe, altho it does keep the GOP from passing their worst ideas. regardless, even the GOP doesn't have the votes to kill the filibuster completely right now (or they'd have done it already). in theory they can also change/abandon the rules of budget reconciliation with 51 votes, but there aren't 51 votes to do that, either.

exactly zero of this is directly controlled by the president.

No, what keeps the Republicans from passing their worst ideas is they don't have 51 votes for them. Killing medicaid failed 43-57 with 9 Republicans against lol.

The filibuster is bad and should have been abolished in 1993 when Republicans started abusing it. Its only function is to allow Republicans to block legislation that they'd never have the stones to repeal once it's passed. Well and it's a convenient scapegoat for Democrats to blame whenever they promise something that their corporate donors don't want them to deliver.
