Main Paineframe posted:no. people were mad at the centrist party officials who used naral's complaints as an excuse to sink a progressive. the same party officials who furiously defended Tim Kaine's abortion record and told pro-choice groups to suck it up in the name of electability were suddenly drawing a line in the sand in abortion, and throwing Mello under the bus even though they'd made him the centerpiece of their #unity campaign just a day or two before well first, mello was a centrist state legislator, not a progressive. but i don't really think party officials were responsible for sinking him, it was 3rd party liberal groups that created the circular omaha firing squad. perez, of course, was weak and made some asinine statement about the party never supporting pro-life candidates that he had absolutely no power at all to enforce. naral was totally fine with all of this as they really did not care who won the omaha mayoral race, but got a ton of free press and issue elevation out of the whole kerfuffle. i don't dispute that some randos on twitter and poo poo took to deciding that mello was on the "wrong team" because bernie endorsed him and started using it as a way to attack sanders, but i don't really think that was the significant factor. i think it just took a lot of momentum out of his campaign. anyway at some point you either are for the party doing any sort of litmus tests on candidates they support, or you're against it. i personally think it's a bad thing that has the potential to backfire - let the people of a district decide their candidate, some national group doesn't need to come in and tell people the candidate they like isn't good enough. i think they do that too often as it is, particularly the ia-sen race was galling to me when the dscc intervened against hogg and then proceeded to abandon their chosen candidate after they won the primary. if you think the party ought to be doing these litmus tests, then i don't think you should have a problem with naral et al purposefully sinking mello - in fact you should want more of that sort of thing in an effort to purge centrists from the party.
