Giving artillery minimum ranges might also be a worth while change. There is no reason to take non-artillery when you can fire you basilisk at units 2 inches away. I won't say that cheap filler units are a bad thing, it is just that brimstones and conscripts are so cheap or useful that they kind of give a distinct advantage to armies that don't have access to them. Alpha strike in the form of Genestealers, Orks, etc is so drat deadly that you need to have these kind of units.

Whoops, sorry Dark Imperium is what I meant.

Also, is White Dwarf good again? Was thinking of going back and picking up a few back issues from this year. Any recommendations? June looks like a good issue to give some insight into Dark Imperium.

I haven't really been playing GW games since the late 90s but every once in awhile I would check in to see the current state of GW and Warhammer. Last I heard they were a poo poo company, taking their fans for granted, charging ridiculous prices, changing their games for the worse (Age of Sigmar) and gutting White Dwarf. Today while running errands over lunch I saw a new store had opened up. The sign said Warhammer. That's not the Warhammer I knew is it I thought? Turns out, yes, it is actually a Games Workshop store 5 minutes from my house, the guy running it is super friendly and gave me a quick five minute introduction to the new 8th edition Warhammer 40k called Dark Vengeance, gave with a free rules brochure and showed me the frikking awesome new miniatures that come with the new box set. I then took a look around the store and found the huge new White Dwarf magazine and other cool stuff.

What happened and is the new Dark Vengeance box set a good deal?

The new sculpts are great. GW is still mostly the same but some things are definitely improving, a lot of the old guard that really didn't seem to Get It have been cut and the new board seems to at least be taking many steps in the direction fans want.

Its still a massively expensive hobby but if you like the setting of 40k there's nothing else like it. The new sculpts really are amazing.

First thing first if I was you is I'd look around at all the factions and decide which appeals to you most, both the lore of the faction, the look of the models, and the way they tend to fight.

Dark Vengeance is a great deal, but only really if you want a small army of both Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines. Its enough for you and a buddy to play against each other, but who are you going to be playing with? If you're planning on playing at your local store against other people who already have armies, maybe try focusing on a single faction, space marines OR chaos space marines, and build up a bigger army of just that faction, to save you money.

Between rules, paints, brushes and models, there's a lot of things to buy to get into the hobby. So cutting corners for awhile is probably a good idea, especially if you don't know if you're into the hobby for the long haul. Maybe just buy a get started box and paint them up and try that out.

Then again, you're going to want the rules, and the dark vengeance box is a great way to get that for cheap. You could try to get the rulebook from DV off ebay too or something.

The "get started" kits are a decent small army, and they're available for tons of various factions. So you can pick something else like Necrons or Skitarii or Imperial Guard, its not just Space Marines or Chaos (but they have those too). They're a great value and get you started on a decent little force.

There's also some additional box sets available for 8th, small bands of chaos marines and marines and some terrain, those wouldn't be a bad way to get started either if you have like a buddy or a wife who may want to play with you and try it out. But again, if you're just gonna play with other warhams who already have armies, maybe just get a starter army of one faction and the rules as cheap as you can.

White Dwarf is pretty cool. They switched from shorter pamphlets that came out several times per week to one big monthly magazine and I kinda prefer it that way. There's lots of good paints and some decent articles, although since they cover all kinds of stuff from Warhammer to 40k to Blood Bowl and all the side specialist games, sometimes you buy a copy of White Dwarf and there's only like 4 pages actually dedicated to the game you play and are interested in. So some are better than others depending upon which game you play. If you're into everything GW then they're pretty solid for sure.

If you're just looking to learn whats going on in 8th, as much as the 4chan-ers are a crazy bunch, their wiki is generally pretty good for quick tips

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics(8E)

This is gonna be kinda overkill for you but you can skim through it to get ideas, also check out the specific faction tactics at the end

My confusion was the guy at the store gave me a Warhammer 40,000 update for Dark Vengeance. Dark Imperium was the boxset he was showing me.

Thanks for the reply Zaphod42. I'll have to go back and look at the other armies. I played Space Marines and Elder back in the day. I was intrigued by Tau when they were released a few years back. Are the old models still usable? I assume so.

Skitarii? No idea what that was until I just googled it. Looks like there's way more options for armies now.

Paint that cowl grey and his scheme would be fine i think. The purple drowns the face entirely.

Although it could just be a bad scan of a GW angle.

Tau are pretty still usable. You'll miss a few wargear options but they didn't lose anything. New Crisis suits look and build amazingly better though.

The Dark Vengeance booklet that dude gave you was a update for the contents of the old starter set, Dark Imperium. It's not bad though if you've got some models kicking around and want a few starter games quickly.

I think the roster of playable factions has pretty much doubled over the last few years. We got Genestealer Cults back, Deathwatch got their own book as did Thousand Sons and Death Guard. Harlequins split off from the other Eldar factions as did Tempestus Scions from the Guard and we got the AdMech dudes. And now we've got the promises of yet more on the way.

Yes all old models are still legal, although some are pretty bad but others are just as good as new models. (I guess there are a few exceptions, like the Goff Rockers)

The space marines just had an update we affectionately call "bigmars" or "bigmarines" because they kinda juiced up the scale. They're bigger and more detailed which is actually really cool. GW decided to keep the old smaller marines legal too so as not to invalidate armies, so both can be used and mixed together, but they do look kinda goofy if you're using one and the other next to each other. The big ones cost more and have better stats to kinda explain the difference, but if you're starting fresh and like space marines you may wanna just pick up big marines and avoid the old sculpts enitrely.

Tau were the dominant force in 7th by a mile along with Eldar. Tau and Eldar have been really, really strong. Hopefully 8th will change that and balance them some with everybody else :cheeky: But SMs, Tau and Eldar are all very solid choices.
