The guides work good, until they don't. Especially with things like extras that sometimes just don't show up in clients for... reasons. Or you have media that doesn't strictly line up with 'TV' and 'Movies'. The very fact they tell you to set up your home movies as TV not Home Media means they have to know this.

But yeah, for 90% of uses it works fine at least.

Yeah, half the time it's a case of refresh library > sigh > hit edit button and fill everything out and hope you never move the files.

I tend to rename the files/folders just to make it a little easier to scrape though when possible.

How much do people recommend Plex Pass? I've considered it for the apps and maybe the DVR stuff in the future, but how do people here like it?

I finally jumped on Pass when they release the DVR stuff. I'm itching for Live TV to show up for Roku or Fire TV so I can finally ditch my WMC. I've had the DVR act kind of weird in a couple of scenarios (thinking the tuner was busy when it was free, not recording shows that were scheduled, recording cutting off way too early) but it's been infrequent enough to not be a huge deal.

The Mobile Sync is handy for me. I occasionally dump new kids shows/movies on my kids tablets and Mobile Sync makes it easy to do that and let's me specify a low bitrate. Now I don't have to deal with Handbrake or transferring the movies onto the device.

Other than those two things I don't really care about anything else it offers.

Plex DVR has missed yet another scheduled recording. If it's going to keep doing this it could at least throw me an error message with an explanation. As it is it's just like "oh, you wanted to record that thing last night?"

Like Asimov's rules of robotics, all tech should be forced to implement rules such as stating 'oh poo poo my bad' when it fucks up. And no more 'general error' bs that is impossible to trace.

I remember as a kid the Acorn Archimedes computer my music teacher had would spill all kinds of crazy error codes onto the screen that meant nothing. They would generally resolve to 'write protect tab on disc is enabled', but you'd never know it.

Live Channels on a Shield (or comedy Nexus player option) is good, and more importantly, reliable, for local channel DVR. Hook up a cheap USB drive to the Shield for recordings and go to town. You'll need a recent HDHR of course.

Doesn't support DRM channels yet and has a few other limitations but for the basic "gimme a grid-guide, let me timeshift, and record stuff reliably when I tell you too" it's pretty solid.

It also tunes very quickly - quicker than Plex and the others - and the program guide is cleanly laid out and easy to understand (Google paid off Macrovision for their stupid patent).

And they recently added Pluto TV, which gives you a ton of channels, some of which are actually pretty good. Pluto is kind of the ultimate filler/background TV service, where you can put on news, sports, or shows, and just let it run. It's integrated with the Live Channels guide, something I really wish more mainstream services like Sling or Vue did (but won't).

Plex DVR/Live TV is ok but when I actually watch or record things I use Live Channels. Programmed the Guide button on my Harmony to launch it and done. Just works.

I seem to have an issue where Plex will sometimes see some but not all of the files in a TV series. Like I have a folder called I dunno Foo, and in it there's Foo1-1.avi, Foo1-2.avi, etc, for say 5 seasons of 20 episodes each or whatever (so the names are consistent) - but I only see the first half of season 1 show up in Plex. How do I go about either debugging this or forcibly adding files to Foo as it shows up on Plex?

I like the concept of the Collections feature, but I wish it would default to hiding the collection until you have 2+ items that match. There's no point showing me that Fantastic Beasts is part of a Fantastic Beasts collection when I only have the one film, and it's not like another even exists yet anyway. Good for X-Men films as they're named a bunch of different things (although the default tag for Logan didn't even include it under X-Men anyway...)

"Guide" by default launches Live Channels with my Harmony Shield profile. I am using the hub, which uses IP/BT not IR with the Shield, and I think that offers more commands than IR does. Truthfully I am not sure if you can change it to something else but don't care.

Netflix and Youtube have dedicated launch buttons I think, but those are the only ones. Otherwise it's the standard navigate to app/click ok approach, which is fine by me.

What player are people using nowadays that is the most feature rich and also has the highest feature set, along with direct play/direct stream in-home with a variety of formats?

It seems like Plex Media Player has been the golden standard for that and I've been using embedded for the longest time on my NUC. However, they seem to have largely abandoned embedded(or at least put it on the back burner), compared to others.

Case in point, some players getting LiveTV support along with both my macOS and Window machines are on the new 'forum only beta PMP' with a brand new layout.

I've used almost every player there is and the Nvidia Shield is just the best. It's not only one of [if not the] best Plex clients, it does stuff like emulate games fairly well with RetroArch and stream PC games from your computer to your TV.

If you're even slightly close to a tech enthusiast on any level, you should probably just buy an Nvidia Shield TV - even if you're an Apple enthusiast. It's so much better than any of the other options and well worth the money.

The naming scheme you're using might be giving Plex some issues recognizing the file. It might work for some, but not others. If you rename your files to what the media preparation guides suggests, then you likely won't run into any issues with Plex detecting content to add to your libraries.

You asked a very straightforward question. You got called on it. You (probably) went to actually read the OP. You come back with qualifications to your (answered) question to cover.

Just don't... How hard is it for us to just say, "Yep, my bad.. didn't read. Thanks for pointing it out (and all the effort in the OP), I appreciate it" like grown up adults?

(While we're here, has reading the OP made clear that the Shield covers all bases, including the all-important 'dev's focus'? Kodi? Check. SPMC (the real example of Deb focus and forking)? Check.) I can continue, but, y'know, it's in the... um, OP.)

I guess I should have clarified my question in reference that most people were screaming about the Shield losing SMB shares on a regular basis.

As to my fault, no I didn't read the OP, since the majority of them on SA seem to be dead (I think of SH/SC). I didn't realize that this one is actually maintained, so my bad on that.

So with that out of the way, can we get back to streaming our Linux ISOs?

PLEX updated their privacy policy. It's not for the better....

"In order to understand the usage across the Plex ecosystem and how we need to improve, Plex will continue to collect usage statistics, such as device type, duration, bit rate, media format, resolution, and media type (music, photos, videos, etc.). We will no longer allow the option to opt out of this statistics collection."

https://www.plex.tv/about/privacy-policy-update-notice/

Despite telling people not to take up pitchforks and go to reddit...well you can imagine how that went...

https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/6ukwc6/privacy_policy_update_notice/

Their forums are currently being lambasted by angry plexpassers and non plexpasses alike...

Plexpass needed: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/283744/new-privacy-policy-you-can-no-longer-opt-out-of-data-collection

Non Plexpass thread (well there are quite a few threads): https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/283745/new-privacy-policy-is-bullshit

They could...they could actually fully develop a feature to sell then. The fact that they haven't reinvested their income into things that are monetisable is not my fault, but if I were to pay another month of Plex Pass it would be. gently caress them. It's 2017 and "We won't use it that way" isn't enough of an argument. It wasn't enough of an argument 5 years ago. I don't trust them to steward the data, even if they were transparent about what the data they are collecting is (all we know is 'not titles and filename,' everything else has been qualified with weasel words like 'things like bitrate'). They've been breached before, and the more data they have the more people will attempt the breach. Their features are almost all half-baked, and their stringent needs for following a filename structure show that they do not handle edge cases well. Security is all about edge cases. All in all, this is the dying breath of a soon-to-be failed platform. We will talk about Plex in 3 years like we talked about Napster in 2005, because that's the exact gameplan they're following.

Yeah I assumed something like this was coming once they made all the player apps free. The mobile sync and DVR were features that I felt worth paying for (and to support something I've been using for years). But most of their users were just looking for something convenient to play their pirated stuff from so not sure how they were going to make money off that without at least charging for the app
