BarbarianElephant posted:There's no way that a war that expends large amounts of American money is going to be a plus for the economy. The reason that WW2 was good for America is that America entered late, when everyone else was already spent, and cleaned up. War is not an "always good for the economy" thing, as the ruinous debt from America's various Middle Eastern adventures should show you. WW2 was a huge economic boon for the US, and it wasn't because we "entered the war late." The entire country went to work, and was paid for it. Peopl e invested that money in war bonds, injecting cash back into the government to be distributed back as more wages. Huge increases in government spending without inflation! The manufacturing systems/processes developed for the war were then put into use after the war, which is why everyone suddenly had a big car and sweet gadgets in the 50s. The right kind of war can be incredibly good for the economy. NK wouldn't be that kind of war.

Well, you say that now, but did you know that, after the Black Death in Europe, there was significant upward pressure on wages? Nuclear war might work the same way! (it's sarcasm, in case that's not clear)

Every other country involved had dealt with war on their soil. We didn't, other than Pearl Harbor and a few small craters on the west coast.

NK will do their Guam test unless we drop the demand to give up their nukes as a precondition to dialogue. Their missiles are going to go where they want them to go, they aren't going to 'miss' anything. But they will not actually attack Guam. The question is if the US tries to intercept these missiles or not. It's a hard decision - NK says they will fire four missiles. How confident is the US that they will intercept all four? If they miss just one, that proves the permeability of our defenses. If they do not try to intercept, it sets a precedent for NK being able to sling missiles around very close to US territory, and also requires faith that they aren't actually attacking (they aren't, but does Trump believe it?)

However, your point still stands and unfortunately no one knows. That is why this whole thing is starting to get a little bit scary because you have two mecurial leaders who are basically daring each other to strike first, and I don't think the rest of the world knows how to handle that. It's unprecedented for the modern era. I think if China gets involved, Russia will, then it's nice knowing you.
