That episode spent a weird amount of time with that 12 year old topless. They could have just had her put her leotard back on instead on spending the rest of the scene doing awkward discretion shots.

Is this going to be a trend?

I think there are two and a half more scenes like this coming up this cour, one right next episode.
It's always about Reg being embarrassed.

But hey, be glad anime Riko is conveniently growing extra pigtails.

That was a pretty intense episode on more than one level, but it's funny that even in a society built around such a harsh & dangerous environment, there are still eccentric oddballs like Rico.

The girl at the telescope is a classic Tsukushi character. She looks like she walked right out of Fairy Musketeer Akazukin.

I think so. The show is just really casual about child nudity, Dragonball-style. I mean, I realise it's not exactly equivalent, but Reg doesn't generally wear much, either.

I'm mostly inclined to give it a pass so far because the nature of the story, the matter-of-fact presentation, and the hyper-stylised character designs seem to signify that they're mainly going for the various other meanings of nudity - a reminder that the human body is weird and silly, a reminder that the human body is appallingly soft and fragile, and a reminder that civilisation and the trappings of 'humanity' as we tend to think of it are shells that we put over ourselves.

Remember that the Cave Raiders don't have a nudity taboo because they're likely to get their clothes get ruined by vomiting/bleeding all over them from magical altitude sickness, and because they have to rely on their friends to patch them back together after poo poo goes sideways and check them all over for diseases and animal bites. It's just like how they all dream of martyring themselves for the city as White Whistles and see indirect cannibalism as a holy experience - Cave Raiders are taught to see themselves less as individual humans, and more as mining equipment in a vast, eternal harvesting operation. Clothing is for people - for digging machines, it's simply an extra layer of protection to be removed for maintenance. I don't think it's a coincidence that Reg, the robot from the depths of hell, has closer social mores to us than the weirdos he's ended up with.

Now, it may well be that the creator just likes drawing naked pre-teens, and is unique enough in his fetishes to find giant heads atop pipe-cleaner bodies arousing, and that things will get increasingly creepy-bad rather than creepy-good, but so far, this all seems at least vaguely defensible.

I think the test is what happens with the maid-looking girl. poo poo always gets weird with maid characters.

I'm trying to pace my reading of the manga with the anime, so there's probably an explanation to this, but it's obvious that Ozen is harboring some incredible bitterness towards Lyza and is just relishing the opportunity to take it out on Rico.

I really like that, despite panicking and fleeing from some nightmare creature, Rico was still considerate enough to take her boots off before crawling into Reg's bed and wetting it.

Malruk's headdress has pouches on it, and I'm certain they're not decorative. I'd love to know what's in them.

The cries of the dead are terrible indeed; you should try not to hear them.
Literally came here to post that I was finding this anime's obsession with naked children disturbing. Like, it comes up a lot. Once or twice and it might almost be innocent, but the author was just hammer and tongs "how can I shoehorn in more weird sexual references and situations with these orphan children."

Other than that it's cool. I feel like the dice are still in the air as to whether it will fall on the side of dark with a childish side or childish with a dark side. How that pans out will probably decide whether I bother to continue.

Yeah, this is the big thing that's stopping it from being AOTS for me - I find it creepy and bothersome. Shame too, cause the art is gorgeous, the plot is compelling, the characters are funny and interesting, and the music and sound design is pretty great as well. I feel like this would have made a really, really good video game too, save for the pedo poo poo. Maybe it's just worse in the manga. The pacing also seems a little slow, although that might just be the past two episodes and the fact that we only get 12 or 13 episodes of it.

It's definitely got the best OP of the season, at least.

From what I hear the manga is worse, and the anime has been trying to clean it up. They just haven't been doing a good enough job.
