if u Linux on the mac osx operating system you need Homebrew to replace all the old as gently caress libraries so you won't have to use a lovely old OpenSSL for example Instead you can use the lovely new ooenssl

spankmeister posted:if u Linux on the mac osx operating system you need Homebrew to replace all the old as gently caress libraries so you won't have to use a lovely old OpenSSL for example apple updates the system libraries when they update the whole OS (barring security fixes) and seem to only do major library updates when they do major OS releases. this is (mostly) a Good Thing. one of the advantages homebrew has over macports is that it doesn't try to replace system libraries with newer versions or replace the system-provided python interpreter or whatever. if something you're installing with homebrew just has to use a newer version, it will install that newer version to /usr/local/lib (or bin etc) and only that specific package will get linked to it so it doesn't break the OS.
