Awh, there are a lot of lovely episodes in Season 3 (KISS! and the one that killed CCH Pounder) but the back half has a handful of pretty great episodes. The Sound of Snow is really good, and Nostalgia and Darwin's Eye are both up there. Saturn Dreaming Of Mercury is completely batshit, in a deeply entertaining way. I'd say those four are up there with the best the show produced, and are certainly better than 90% of what aired in the first season.

The tone-deaf portrayal of muslims and muslim terrorists in the year 2016, the Pieta imagery, and the idea of inserting a magic mushroom trip in the middle of an episode that was otherwise not that wacky, for starters. Also, some people were mad the Lone Gunmen cameo was used for a magic mushroom trip scene. The magic mushroom trip itself was pretty great imo, until they get to the scene with the Pieta and Claire Fisher being a dominatrix

It also ends with the sound of God as Mulder tells Scully that maybe the lesson of the episode is just to be nice to people, or something incredibly trite along those lines. I liked the Pieta part of the trip solely because it had the CSM as Charon while Tom Waits' "Misery is the River of the World" played.

The mushroom trip was great because while he's happily jamming along and waving with a big grin on his face, the audio provides context clues that he's walking in the middle of the street, but you never see anything from an objective point of view--so you're just left to imagine the chaos an idiotic, oblivious Mulder is causing. Also even though the hallucination is funny and light, it really underscores how empty and sad Mulder's life is, totally stuck in the 90s and without any friends or enemies who haven't died at least 15 years earlier.

I'll agree with this in terms of the hallucination being completely self-contained. That said: it's been pointed out that it was a seriously bizarre left turn in comparison to the rest of it. It was mentioned back when the episodes were airing-- wasn't just by me, it was by a number of people, that a lot of folks were looking at the intro to Babylon like 'okay how are they gonna X-Files this,' since the show was at its finest when it came to subverting expectations. Given how the Tad McBullshit character was played straight in the season premiere, however, I'll admit I had a sinking feeling when it started out with a Muslim man praying. Sinking feeling did not lie: 'pulled the rug out from under you' was the last thing that turd of an episode did. So. When I say 'tonedeaf,' I mean both in terms of its early-aughts 24-era treatment of Muslims in TYOOL 2016/7, but in managing to gleefully poo poo all over one of the things the series did really well, back in its heyday.

I think a lot of people overlook the final season of True Blood because it had been campy and knowing about it's terribleness up until that point. That final season managed to make Dexter look like TV gold. It was totally unwatchable. I'd completely scrubbed it from my memory until someone just mentioned it. In fact the only thing I can still remember is that they went fully sincere melodrama in the final ep and ended in just about the worst, least fun way a show that had been a lot of fun up to that point, could.

But really, how boring was season 7? Because I thought the X-Files season 10 opener was an amazing piece of poo poo, but then the rest of the season is so loving boring to sit through, and comes off like it was written in a hurry too.

What's the episode where Mulder and Scully hunt down these sort of wood creatures with glowing red eyes? I was thinking of that one earlier as one that's really creepy - because they're almost always just a pair of red eyes on dark backgrounds - right up until the wrap-up scene at the end where Mulder says they were the descendants of Spanish conquistadors who got lost in the forest and over the interceding 400 (!) years evolved into these guys with bark for skin and (for some reason) digitigrade feet. It's kind of like how "Orison" and "Kitsunegari" make "Irresistible" and "The Pusher" look a tiny bit weaker by association, except it's all in one episode.
