So you aren't wrong, but you aren't right either. The Navy was literally my golden ticket out of white trash land. I graduated at the exact same time the tech bubble burst in a tech heavy town. I couldn't get a job better than fast food cashier to save my life, mind you I tended my first cashier at 14... I rode the line between being broke and crippling poverty for a few years before I decided to enlist, and I waited on DEP for almost a full year. Not gonna lie, being able to ship to boot camp was like hitting the lotto. But what happens if you can't enlist? Or if you were raised in a single industry town in a dying part of the rust belt? It's hard to move if you can't afford it, and how do you differentiate yourself from any other broke white dude in any other town when you interview for a job slightly better than 8 an hour at Wal-Mart? Don't get me wrong, I have 0 sympathy for these Nazi fucks, but there are a lot of folks looking for answers to some desperate questions out there.

Stupid people in bad situations behave even more stupidly than might be reasonably expected. When you live in a community that exists in a region that is completely dependent on a single dying industry it's not the simplest thing to tell everyone around that they're loving wrong and you want to take out an honestly insane amount of student loans out to learn a trade you'll have to practice in a different region / state. Say goodbye to the idea outright if you have accrued a drug charge or had a kid. What I'm saying is that having sympathy for the stupid isn't a terrible thing, particularly if they come from a place that sucks as much as West Virginia / Florida / the ghetto

While, intellectually, I sympathize with the plight of the rural poor that gets wiped away by my emotional response to the sheer magnitude of the hatred and bigotry they express. What happened today in Charlottesville really solidified that feeling - I think there's somebody I know in that crowd of torch wielding pieces of garbage. It's hard to express, I guess. I want to sound smart and rational and talk about how the system failed them but at this point I no longer give a single poo poo about their well being and just want them to go away.
