I liked FFXIII's approach to storytelling the first time I played it (Not the Datalog)

Good or bad they gave each individual character a lot of screen time, something a lot JRPGs don't do

This one. It comes with a bunch of other mods too for convenience. If you're planning on replaying this game anyway I would actually recommend this whole package, even if the translation is not always good.

Another factor about Lightning being mad in the birthday scene that isn't obvious to the players is that Lightning already was mad at Snow in the past and told him to stay away from her sister the first time they met. So it'd suck to go from that to hearing that your sister is gonna marry this obnoxious dude. But you'd only get that from the prequel novel thing, so it's really dumb to have no context in the game.

zedprime posted:

Lightning's response is just a denial then anger response in the stages of grief. Replace lcie with a for real but rare terminal illness and you'd see the same argument about getting married.

Well, sorta. A l'Cie is like that but you're also a magical spy agent for the fal'Cie, and also these spy agents/diseases haven't been seen in hundreds of years.

I would recommend the New Threat Mod which totally overhauls and improves the battle system and was recently just completely finished after years of work and updates. (although I'm holding out for SC's FFVIII mod which I am very excited for)

For what it's worth FFXIII has slick visuals, UI and the music is legitimately good. I think the battle system generally succeeds at what it's trying to do: fast paced battles that require you to shift strategy to keep up with enemies

I remember when the first trailer came out and had that song in it, I really hoped it would be the random battle theme. Was not disappointed.

I mean, I was disappointed by a lot, but not the music.

Do you mean this ffx boss theme? That was actually composed/arranged by Junya Nakano and not Hamauzu. Though Nakano did do a couple arrangements on 13, including this boss song that sounds very similar as that FFX song.

Hamauzu did do the other boss battle theme in FFX, the one for Seymor Flux and Yunalesca, and that's actually my favorite FFX battle theme :shobon:

Worst part of XIII's battle theme is that by endgame you end popcorn encounters fast enough that you don't get to hear the DOO doo DOOdoo DOO doo dooDOO part.

e: according to that youtube link to the track from the OST it's 0:58 in, that's just sad :(

Both of XIII's sequels were better designed by virtue of actually being fun to play rather than just proceeding down various hallways so you could get to the next cutscene.

XIII-2 might be easier but I'll play it again all day everyday because I can actually do stuff besides random battles.

XIII-2 is real bad in comparison to XIII mostly because everything that isnt the concept of "there are npcs to talk to at all times" is strictly worse than something in XIII

Are we still talking strictly gameplay here? Because while I was no fan of the puzzles, I liked the time travel mechanics and non-linearity and multiple endings.

But aside from that, I also prefer XIII-2 in terms of music and having a villain with some presence.

Eh, I don't mind hallways as long as the battle systems is fun. 13-2 does give a bit more freedom beyond hallways, but I don't feel it does anything spectacularly well with it in comparison (outside of like, academia 400 I guess). That + the worse balance + the battle system not being quite as good is why I'll take 13-1 over 2 anyday.

I've been staring at Vaan's job select screen for like 20 minutes. I have total paralysis. In theory it would be cool to use every job once, since you get 12 now and that would mean there's zero equipment I can't use, but there's also some jobs I don't give a flying gently caress about.

Like how bad is it to have two White Mages or two Knights instead of bringing an Archer?

Is Machinist just garbage for dealing damage bc guns were pretty unreliable in vanilla FF12 but I have no clue if they've changed any mechanics, added any broken endgame weaponry, etc

I'm surprised no one mentioned Galuf shattering a crystal with sheer willpower, then surviving being on the receiving end of Exdeath's magic to beyond 0 health, and he doesn't die until after the battle because his granddaughter and friends still needed protecting. That and the destruction of Home in X are my two favorite moments in the series.

Pick whatever it doesn't matter as long as you don't make like 6 white mages or something and even then you'd probably be okay if you picked something sensible for the second job

All jobs are good, and you get two. Machinist is probably the "worst" class but it's still not going to ruin you. Archer is ok because there is some synergy with the burning bow and Red Mage, but if you don't care, just play how you want.

e: I like doing all the classes between my 6 characters and I'm just rolling through everything. I guess if you have too many of one class you might be thin on the really good equipment later on, but two knights sounds fine to me.
