Call from my wife:

Her -- my car's not starting.
Me -- are the lights on?
Her -- yes, but they turn off automatically.
Me -- well, that shows the battery is fine.
Her -- Maybe I'll have Steve jump me, oh he doesn't have cables
Me -- Is it doing anything?
Her -- Yeah, it's turning over, but not starting.
Me -- Then it's not the battery, something else is going on.
Her -- Let me see if I can get someone to at least try to jump me.
Me -- :suicide:

Awesome follow-up:
Her -- hey, I got it started, somebody jumped me.
Me -- okay, bye.

I suppose you know whether or not your wife understands what 'turning over' means, but that isn't really a given even with a smart woman who's a non-car person. I have been unable to explain it to my wife after 15 years, partly because each of our various terrible broken cars do different things when they won't start from a dead battery, the oldest one will at least chug a little bit in a slow fashion but won't start, the newer old one won't do anything but click when it has a dead battery.

It's also possible that while Steve is over having an affair with your wife, he didn't get the ground cable properly hooked to any bare metal and that's why it's turning over but not starting.

Also, some idiot left the lights on overnight on my mom's car this last week (it was me) (I got used to how my car's automatic lights worked and hers are different, so I'd turned them to manual at some point) and all the Toyota Avalon dash poo poo and interior electrics worked and she could move the seat around when she tried to use it in the morning, but it wouldn't even click when she hit the starter button, then once the neighbor came over with his battery charger and zipped it up for 10 minutes it was completely fine to go.

e: Heh at how many other people got similar responses in there while I typed that.

I guess that's an option. I figure it's either that, or it needed a couple minutes to reset and when she tried it again, it was with jumper cables and now has a false correlation between a no-start and jumping it.

A) The parking lot sensor puck that is suction-cupped to the windshield fell and hit her hazard button.

B) She found that out when the hazards came on once the jumper cables were connected.

C) She said it was turning over, but slower and slower every time.

I told here that for future reference, "turning over" is a completely different explanation than "turning over, but slower and slower every time."

My neighbor called one night asking if I could jump off her crappy expedition. I go over there, it's turning over, not firing. I get her son to cycle the key while I lean under the gas tank...nothing, no hum. Can't find a Schrader valve hookup for the fuel system to verify no pressure. Check fuel pump fuse is good and is hot.

I tell her that the battery is fine, and I think the fuel pump is bad or isn't getting power. She INSISTS on "jumping it off". I try to talk her out of it for being useless, but finally give in and hook up the cables to my little matrix.

drat if it didn't crank on the second try. loving Ford. a month later she texted me asking if I could change out the fuel pump. not no but HELL no.

I wish you luck. My school did a good job of taking students input on what projects they got assigned. I got lucky and I probably ended up on the projects with the lowest idiot count and also having advisers that weren't awful.

Also family chat, I feel you dude. We just lost one of my uncles, my Grandmas last sibling, shes now 1 of what was 16. I have no idea how awful it must feel to watch 16 brothers and sisters die in your life time.

Also I finally sat down and started planning out finances for the future and uh. A basic analysis shows that even with the low end of salaries in my field, I should be able to save up enough to pay off all my student loans by the time interest starts kicking in. I know it's never that simple, but... maybe this won't be so bad?

I just bought a Nexgrill bbq on season end sale at my local Costco on a whim since my old one finally but the biscuit. Get home and then decided to do some reading on it (yeah, backwards I know). Guess what - it has pretty bad reviews, which surprises me since Costco usually carries good stuff in my experience so I'll probably just return it.

Any recommendations for "good" grills that are either native natural gas or easily convertible and don't cost a fortune?

See right now my loan debt is more on the order of like... 10k. I don't think it's news that I was 100% supported by my mom until I took my first aid 2 years ago, it helped massively and I still only have the subsidized federal loans so interest doesn't kick in til well after I graduate.

E: I probably would have taken some before, but before I turned 25 her income basically disqualified me from getting anything, and after I had too many credit hours to get aid at the community college; I wasn't eligible til I transferred to the university with its higher (bachelor's) limit.

Plus, he'd left the gate open and there was evil everywhere.

My wife currently sits at around $120k in student loans for her Masters. Now she did all this before I met her as of course I would have advised against it but so is life. At first I thought this was a one off kind of thing and then I hear that a friend of hers is $200k in the hole from her Bachelors. I look into this as it seems like insane money to me so looked at Northeastern University to see how much it was a year and my jaw literally dropped. Currently $62k a year all in. Unless you have someone covering that how are you ever supposed to dig yourself out of that? Luckily my wife had a full ride to Northeastern (which then was negated by going to another private school at full price) but her friend did not. Being a terrible Euro Commie Pinko Socialist and thus paying 0% interest on loans of under $12k for my whole University stay these numbers are absurd to me.

It has a lot of other impacts as well since we cannot file taxes together as my income means she has to pay the max amount monthly which is $2000, she make about $2500 after tax. I am getting pre approval for a home loan but she cannot be on it from a financial point of view as her loans mean we cannot get anything and when it all gets forgiven decades from now she will end up with a huge income tax bill that she will never be able to pay off either so for her education she will be indebted for life.

Tech school. ATI Technical, which no longer exists after allegations of something or other. They did actually teach me good stuff, oddly enough. Lucked into a decent instructor in a new program (Electronics Technology - basically electronics with A+ and Network+). Plus another $3-4K or so from a little bit of college.
