Just caught up after pages and pages of new developments. I attended Heather's funeral at the Paramount, and I'm glad to say that I didn't see a single Nazi in the vicinity. Police were swarming the Mall, but I think they probably knew not to come here after what happened.

Despite the eyebrows raised by Heather's stepfather's "all lives matter" comment, the people who spoke were pretty adamant about changing the world for the better and not giving in to hate. That's not an easy message to hear, and especially for people who knew Heather better than I did (she and I never crossed paths much in school). I thought everyone did a great job. Her Mom in particular did a really good job of giving a non-political political speech (if that makes sense). You'll probably see it on the national news.

There was only a single interruption: at the very end of the service, as the family was preparing to file out, some genius decided that it would be a great time to start haranguing about Trump. A lot of the people inn the audience - me included - probably agreed with what the woman was saying, but nobody wanted to hear it in the middle of Heather's service.

I'm very glad to hear the guys that were talking about showing up to cause problems were just all bluster.

Well, I hope that happens.

I do worry that the logistics of the race will be such an uphill climb that policy won't be the deciding factor at all. Trump and the GOP still have plenty of time to hit the gas on voter suppression efforts and plenty of time to lay the groundwork to kill the reputations of any Democratic rising stars, establishment or otherwise, before the primary even begins.

I don't think it'll be impossible, but I bet it's going to be even harder than 2016, even if Trump's approval stays in the shitter.

Democrats can, and should, work on winning as many state level positions in 2018 to begin rolling that poo poo back ahead of 2020. It's important not to neglect the state level this time.

Yup. There's a really good piece in NY Mag today that I posted in the Bad Dems thread, and it has this to say on the matter: (emphasis mine)

quote:

The strength of the populists’ case lies in a simple fact: Democrats have everything to gain by polarizing the electorate around issues of economics. In Drutman’s analysis, 73.5 percent of 2016 voters espoused broadly liberal views on economic policy. If people voted solely on the basis of their intuitions about how government should intervene in the economy (when interrogated about such matters by pollsters), Democrats would dominate all levels of government.

As we’ve established, that isn’t how most people vote. Rather, people generally cast their ballots on the basis of which candidate or party they identify with — which is to say, the one that seems to best represent people like them. The GOP has built a formidable coalition through its mastery of white middle class — and conservative Christian — identity politics.

But all voters possess myriad social identities, including latent ones. A single individual may understand herself in relation to a political party, religious group, line of work, ethnic heritage, gender, and socioeconomic stratum. And since Trump took office last January, the GOP has done (virtually) everything in its power to inform the vast majority of its voters that it does not stand for them, in their capacity as working people.

Congressional Republicans have spent the bulk of the past six months trying to make health care more expensive, and less accessible, for lower middle-class, elderly Americans, especially those who reside in rural areas — in other words, a wide swath of their own base. They have done this largely for the sake of carving out budgetary space for cutting taxes on the very wealthy.

There are already signs that these betrayals are bringing some GOP voters’ class identities to the fore. A recent Vox/Survey Monkey poll found that one in seven Trump supporters feared that the GOP health-care bill would hurt them. These voters are, in the aggregate, poorer and less economically secure than the president’s other supporters. Critically, their fear of Trumpcare appears to be alienating them from the president: Compared to other Trump backers, they are less confident in the president’s economic management, and more concerned about the Russia scandal and the administration’s alleged ethical violations.

This presents Democrats with an opportunity. And there’s good reason to think that a populist turn — which is to say, a conscious effort to increase the electoral salience of economic class through rhetoric and policy — is the best way to capitalize on it.

Policy wasn't important in the last election, either. It had literally nothing to do with Hillary's policy positions*, but that she seemed "corrupt" or "lying". Coupled with the fact that her victory was seen as a foregone conclusion.

Your opposition to Nazis starts and ends with saying "I think Nazis are bad". Maybe you view antifa as a necessary evil, at best, but beyond that any proposal to help neutralize the Nazi threat but which also threatens capitalism or might improve the circumstances of groups which are currently productive recruiting grounds for Nazis, you will reject out of hand on the grounds that it is impractical or immoral, respectively.
