yeah if you read maria's huffiness as her being a 40-something mom who drinks wine on saturdays and watches daytime tv she becomes pretty good

Tsubasa is a wing now, get it right. Also her newfound sense of humor is good.

I can see how that might be annoying, but I find it really cute & endearing. chumbler posted:Tsubasa is a wing now, get it right. Also her newfound sense of humor is good.

I can see how that might be annoying, but I find it really cute & endearing. Yeah, Maria's character is that of someone trying really hard to be a reliable big sister, a caring substitute mother, a strong leader, and a brave and powerful warrior all at the same time because those are the roles that fate and circumstance forced onto her rather than because she is particularly inclined to be any of those things - she really isn't, but she's going to try her god damned hardest to do those things anyway because those things are all needed and she has the strongest sense of responsibility in the entire cast. I really like watching her try, fail, be lame, and still keep trying because that's who she is. It's also why the scene in GX where Maria borrowed Gungnir and used it briefly against Garie is one of my favorite scenes in the franchise; Maria standing there resolutely and lecturing Hibiki about taking responsibility and using the power she was given by nature despite Maria bleeding out of her god drat eyes right after absolutely getting her rear end kicked against an overwhelming opponent was, in my opinion, basically the best moment in the series at showing off who Maria is. Anyway I haven't seen the latest episode yet but Maria is cool and a nice mum and she was one of the few characters who kinda had consistent focus and felt like she had a more than 1 episode arc in GX, which I appreciated. Also, she's been good this season and she has maybe my favourite songs.

I know i'm late with episode reactions but with watching G only a couple of months ago it's super weird this episode had stuff about how Nastassja helped the FIS kids grow strong since like her whole development in G was realising that the way she raised and treated the kids was hurting them and not actually helping in any way and wanting to change that since she did care about them.

Yeah, I didn't really like the revelation here being "Mom beat and abused us with a god damned riding crop, but was sad about it and it was totally for our own good. Love!" Basically every bit of character development the FIS girls have gotten since their introduction has been them growing out of their trauma bit by bit and being allowed to live normal lives and make decisions for themselves instead of being disposable weapons, so this felt like some weird historical revisionism. Mom was functionally identical to Ver in that she had some (questionably) good intentions but did a lot of really heinous, bad poo poo in service of those intentions and while their heroic deaths served as some measure of redemption for their crimes, they were still Bad People. Seriously, Mom masterminded the opening of G where the plan was to threaten a giant stadium full of people with weaponized Noise, for gently caress's sake.

Yeah the writing's weird. The idea is sound, and the tomato bit is good because it actually fits in with other stuff - pain helps you empathize with other people, communication. Fine was the bad guy because she used her pain as an excuse to hurt others, Ver was the bad guy because he'd never felt any pain or had to give anything up, Carol was the bad guy because she was forgetting the lessons her pain had taught her, the gears are the heroes because they've grown from their pain and want to help other people get through theirs. That all clicks. The flashback could have easily worked if it had been a flashback to Maria enduring her treatment at the facility with Kirishira and Serena, and the four of them getting closer together. That would have fit with Maria's motivations and given some expansion to her backstory and why she's so close to Kirishira. Instead half the flashback is Mom, who is a functionally irrelevant character, and the other half is some random kid with a bum leg, who is literally an irrelevant character. Forgiveness for even really bad things is a big part of Symphogear, but the point of the scene doesn't even seem to be 'Mom did bad things but she did her best to make up for it,' but 'mom did bad things, but actually, that was good.' Hibiki's dad was a real shitheel but at least he just walked out instead of hitting her with a riding crop for six years. Endorph fucked around with this message at 08:36 on Aug 20, 2017 |

I mean Ver didn't really have good intentions. And Mom did figure out several episodes before she sacrificed herself that her methods and plans were kinda awful and actively detrimental to the wellbeing of people she cared about and sorta tried to walk that back. Like, the idea that Nastassja did legitimately love the FIS kids and they still consider her their Mom and care about her even though she was an exceptionally lovely parent is something i'm ok with. But the idea that the way they were raised was actually positive in any way is ridiculous, because not only was all that the reason why Maria goes through like 4 consecutive emotional breakdowns in G but Nastassja herself gets character development about realising everything she's done has done nothing but hurt them. It's real silly.

The whole Maria revelation thing was kinda weird Like it could've been a few things: It could've been Maria struggling with a crisis of confidence over having an inability to have a normal life, and then realizing that her lovely upbringing has made her extra resilient, so it wasn't all for nothing (leaning really hard into the tomato thing). Alternately, it could be about "forgiving" Mom (even though she didn't seem mad in the first place) and that doing that would help her let her guard down re:getting close to other people again, which would tie into figuring out the formula for Linker. But instead it's just kinda... her thinking a bit about her past, and then Dr. Ver saves the day. That last part is great, but that first part seems a bit aimless. Also this week's episode has me noodling on what a "normal" human is capable of in Symphogear. Genjuro is clearly somewhere around what I'd call "Master Asia" level, and Ogawa is a literal ninja, but what about the alchemist trio? They use alchemy and Faust Robes to fight, but don't Prelati and Cagliostro have "perfect bodies"? Can they do all that superfly stuff too as a result???

It's real silly. Ver and Mom's intention was the same in G - preserve the human race from imminent and seemingly unstoppable catastrophe by sacrificing the vast majority of it - it's just that they had different ideas about how much of humanity should end up being saved, with Ver being a particularly megalomaniacal dick about it. I agree in that I don't think it's a bad thing that the FIS girls remember Mom with some degree of fondness; that's not really any different than Hibiki wanting to try reconnecting with her awful deadbeat dad, because even though he's a shitheel he's still her dad. I think it's mostly just a really poor storyboard here. Like Endorph basically said, the scene as written would have worked a lot better if the flashbacks focused on what good came out of Mom's harshness instead of a chain of flashbacks of Mom whipping the poo poo out of children constantly while looking vaguely sad about it. Nobody cares about Mom; she had a full plot arc and a redemption and she's been dead for two seasons now and even the FIS girls never really bring her up, so why is the entire flashback devoted to "Maybe Mom beating children was actually good?"

Wasn't Ver's goal to become a hero and "saving" the human race (and murdering most of them so everyone left would celebrate him and not try to overthrow him or something along those lines) was just his way of doing that? And I feel like even if the episode hadn't shown Nastassja whipping Maria daily and had flashbacks of the harsh spartan training being useful it'd still be a dumb message that the way she was raised was actively helpful. Like, if it had kept all the stuff of Maria getting beat and the training being awful but the moral was something like "Maria endured a lot of hardships throughout life but thanks to friendship and her relationship with the other kids (and heck maybe even Mom if they really wanted to go that route) she managed to overcome all that and become the good and strong person she is today despite those troubles" rather than "Maria got beat by her Mom to make her stronger and it worked and was a good thing" it'd be pretty alright SyntheticPolygon fucked around with this message at 11:35 on Aug 20, 2017 |
