Kiss the Joycon to Kiss Zelda

Martytoof posted:

Bought Sonic and I've been playing for five minutes here and there. As someone who never played the original and generally didn't play a lot of 8/16 bit stuff, this game is confusing. I'm still not sure what some of the game mechanics are which I'm sure are second nature to everyone who played it before. Like sometimes I mash some buttons and Tails lifts Sonic up and then sometimes I can break walls and then sometimes I just spin against a dead end or I hit an enemy and I toss my rings but then other times I hit an enemy and I kill them.

I feel like I just need to watch some kind of "sonic for idiots" youtube guide because I'm feeling kind of like a grampa who can't work a smartphone right now.

e: Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a great game and based on what I saw I think that once I figure out what the gently caress is happening on screen and equate it to things I can make my fingers do then I'll have a great time with it. Definitely feel it'll be worth my $27.something.
Actually being able to get Tails to lift you is basically new to Sonic Mania (well, apparently the developer of the game who made the unofficial Sonic remakes way back had the Tails lifting in those too). I only knew abut it because I read someone in the Sonic Mania thread mention it. I think you press Up and hold the jump button or something. In the original Sonic 2 when they introduce Tails, you couldn't control him yourself, but he basically mimicked your actions.

Regarding walls, some of them are destructible, some of them aren't. Similarly, some of them have hidden passages in them.

For enemies, different enemies will have different hitboxes. Some you can't jump on top of, some you can't hit head on. Some will be timed, like they'll flash with electricity for a few seconds (there's one particularly annoying enemy like this in Studio Night Studiopolis Zone.

You're not supposed to do anything, you can play however you like. I'll usually play a bit of a mix, sometimes I'll blow through some areas, sometimes I'll be more deliberate and explore a bit.

How many games do we currently have that care 3+ players which can use joycon limited controls? I've been thinking about picking up a second pair of cons for when friends come over. I'm guessing MK8D, maybe bomberman? Guessing the Mario Party will, whenever it comes out.

I don't mind the busy level design but that combined with not really understanding the mechanics means that :supaburn: STUFF IS HAPPENING ON SCREEN :supaburn: and I am barely able to follow :q:

Thanks for this. I gathered some of this stuff and I think it's just a matter of becoming comfortable with it. Compared to games like SMB it just seems to toss you in the deep end right away. Well, at least a deeper end than I was expecting :)

Konami's arcade multiplayer titles would've been great for this, but... pachinko.

Digital Foundry slammed Overcooked! for performance issues but overall I've had a lot of fun playing with people.
If it's an issue, it's kinda tough to tackle solo.

Sonic Mania honestly reminds me of Zelda 2. The levels are basically labyrinth with multiple paths where every once in a while you are in a puzzle room you need to solve to progress, and eventually a boss. Combat is finicky and timing based.

I never got lost because they do a great job of having practically every path flow to the end. What do you mean by puzzle? Theres tricky platforming i guess.

I've been wondering this myself, specifically the single joycon support. I know Overcooked is another that will do up to 4 with single joy cons.

You're not really lost, but a lot of the time I find I'm changing direction so much and going left away from where I thought I was progressing I wasn't sure if I was still progressing, even though I was. By puzzles I do mean the tricky platforming. A few times I've gotten stuck in a loop unsure of where I needed to jump or what stage hazard I had to utilize to get to the next section.

Actually the entire reason they're making videogames at all right now is their pachinko income has gone right down the toilet. I think a law change hosed them or something? It's why they're working on Metal Gear Survive (After outright-stating to its creator they would never be using the Fox Engine for anything ever again) as a blatant survival-wave cash grab that'll no doubt be micro-transacted out the rear end.

Recently the Japanese government finally legalized casino-style gambling and, from what I understand, they're trying to bring pachinko into line with that with new regulations. SNK admitted that said regulations made them come back to video games.

It's true to the original physics but so far as I can tell the levels are better designed to suit those physics.
