It's funny how this show took off when the thing it exists to promote went kaputt before it even released. It's like if the G1 Transformers cartoon was still successful but the Toys it existed to sell were discontinued before episode 1 aired. What are they supposed to do at this point? Try to relaunch the phone game? Make a new one? Pretend we have always been at war with EastAsia and it was always about the cartoon?

I remember reading somewhere that the game wasn't meant to promote the anime. It was basically a multimedia thing and the mobagame just went out and died first before the anime even started airing.

This is correct, it was more of a multimedia project based of Mine Yoshizaki's setting and character designs. The anime and game actually both started production around the same time, it just took the anime a lot longer to come together and by then the game was already on its way out.
