I vaguely remember this.

Something about a fat crazy SJW Derek was trying to be nice to, and something about GamerGate? I think Derek was really mad about it.

I'm sure he'll be along shortly with his blog from that era.

"spray you with fizzed piss" is definitely something he would write though.

IT WOULD NOT BE DIFFICULT MEIN FUHRER!

D-Smizzle was at a vaguely gamer-gate related panel discussion or something and he basically said that games journalism was trash. I think Harper is the person who curates some big list of people who get auto-blocked for being vaguely gamer-gate related, and this was upsetting to Derek who up until that point really had no stake in the "conflict." It's also how he would end up making friends with a bunch of crazy right-wingers.

We are still working hard on getting 3.0 ready for release. Our current approach is to reach an acceptable quality level by fixing the issues we’ve identified as mandatory (we call them ‘Must Fix’), as noted in the list below. Although our numbers look similar to last week’s at first glance, this high level view hides a massive amount of activity below the surface. The team have actually tackled many important issues (more than 25 blockers have been cleared this week) that allow QA to progress beyond those blockers, to test deeper into the game, which often means they find new bugs that we couldn’t discover before. We’re still moving closer and closer to release and, as you can see from the new Burndown chart, it’s really a case of a few steps forward and then one step back. This process is very common during the push to a major release, as any seasoned game developer would attest.

This week we have also moved the code onto its own 3.0 branch. “Branching” is when we copy the code from our main repository, where all the developers send their fixes and implementations at any time, to a separate “branch” and start looking more closely at what is changing, to make sure that any activity happening is absolutely necessary for our target build. While there are benefits to having all our developers working on the same codebase during production, so that features and new systems are applied simultaneously across the board, the isolation granted from branching allows us to focus on close in on a stable release. This is why we’ve moved our efforts to the 3.0 branch this week, a positive step in getting 3.0 in your hands.

Bringing so many improvements together takes time to adjust and balance, so some features are still adapting their schedules to achieve the desired quality. We hope this transparency allows people to get a better understanding of how this process works and helps you see our progress towards a release. You may also want to consult this week’s ATV Burndown Report for more information on our development progress.

Holy poo poo were they not working in branches?

Oh my god, they're 'burning down' to 3.0 and they're still loving around with lighting and fog. It's almost as if adding graphics systems at the last minute would throw in a poo poo-ton of bugs, who'da thunk it?!? The Entity Owner Manager is 'finished' but not hooked into the system, and CR's micromanaging has caused a bunch of UI tasks to be redone (at the last minute, because of course it would be redone at the last minute).

But it's ok because the Aurora rework is complete and in 'bugfixing and polish' stage (I wonder how many new critical bugs that threw into the works?)!

Hahahahahaha, sheeeeeeit.

What the hell else are 300 other folks supposed to do? They are bored and honing their skills for future projects. When it comes time what they are working on now, it will all need to be refactored due to bad project management. But that doesn't matter. There really aren't any cost or schedule constraints.

I guess think of it this way, you have an entirely broken software infrastructure with absolutely no direction in sight. You are fresh out of college and have a full set of development/modelling tools at your fingertips. What better way to waste your time than to hone your craft while the ten people that are trying to piece together this pile of poo poo are in the spotlight. You get called out, so show some of the stuff you worked on. Everyone is like cool, let's use it...and it gets tossed backed into the CIG development blender. Professional development at the extreme.

I couldn't imagine working in such a place where everything you do has to be approved by the CEO and 99% of the time is unacceptable and needs to be redone. Or find out that the CEO wants to redo something you finished 3 years ago. It must really be disheartening to those who actually joined hoping to make a game.

Oh man, I haven't thought about GGA in years. SC:BW remastered. Derek Smart at war with Chris Roberts. What a nostalgia-rich time to be alive.

I wonder if those of us who were in games in the 80s/90s are ruining games the way Baby Boomers ruined music? Because it sure seems like there are more and more remasters and rehashes of games I loved as a kid.

I like how their explanation for this is that they wanted the benefit of having all of the myriad feature development happening in one place (which obv. could have still happened with a long-running 3.0 branch, but whatever).

This reasoning runs completely counter to the unstated but incredibly clear fact that they haven't actually started integrating their features until recently. They've just been checking everything into the same dev branch without doing what would be necessary to get any of the benefits of that approach.

Yeah, I remember this, and I agree, the biggest problem with CIG is CR and his obsession with micromanaging every aspect of the game. I even commented in that spectrum thread that was deleted a couple of days ago that it struck me recently just how completely unaccountable CR is; even if some backers threaten to stop funding or ask for refunds there's always more that are willing to pay for ~dreams~.

Derek has stated he had nothing to do with that ad, and wasn't pleased with it. You'll have to get the answer from the man himself, but it's very likely he never had any interaction with her whatsoever.
