I had the idea to launch a kickstarter, wait for someone in China to copy my product and sell it on AliExpress, and then send the Chinese counterfeits of my nonexistant product to my kickstarter backers. I'm guessing there is a non-zero chance that someone else has already had this idea, and executed it.

I get a sick pleasure from seeing failed kickstarter/indiegogo campaigns, so here is a bunch of of the Kickstarter projects from November to around February posted in this thread. I listed their total gross, funding date, what they are, and what their current status is. Some seem to be on track, but I assume all are going to continue to break promises. If people think this post is a huge abomination I can trim it or just delete it. $127,272 12/2016 Pants for pants https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vear/the-legs-jacket-waterproof-and-breathable/posts/1950937 Had issues with manufacturing but states they are now in full production, picture is provided as apparent proof, aiming to ship at least 150 units hopefully in the next month. $109,406 11/2016 Individual pod cookie maker https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1503077171/chip-smart-cookie-ovenfresh-cookies-in-under-10-mi/posts/1935083 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1503077171/chip-smart-cookie-ovenfresh-cookies-in-under-10-mi/posts/1885389 Apparently they have completed circuit designs and are working towards getting it manufactured, said shipping delayed until 2018. No prototypes actually shown. $40,614 11/2016 Endless forest sequel (https://www.somethingawful.com/mmo-roulette/endlessforest/1/) https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-endless-forest-second-decade-game-multiplayer#/updates http://olt.lt/ms/the-unreal-forest-step-3/ They seem to have basic framework down and some UI elements and basic multiplayer. How much of this is just unreal engine assets I am unsure of. $925,802 12/2015 e-ink shoes https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/shiftwear-customize-your-kicks-technology#/updates http://shiftwear.com/blog/2017/05/19/mayupdate2017/ They are finalizing their prototypes (maybe, again no actual pictures of this) and are accepting more monies for pre-orders. They also decided to move their operations to china and have apparently abandoned updating on indiegogo. $2,766,515 10/2015 IoT meat thermometer https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/meater-the-only-wire-free-smart-meat-thermometer-food-technology#/updates Apparently they started shipping individual units and are attempting to start production of the block unit. Some of the comments imply that a large portion of people still have not received the individual unit yet, there was a update stating they had shipped a few thousand. $67,167 11/2016 Phone application controlled router that acts as a site blocker https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gryphonconnect/gryphon-simple-safe-super-fast-wifi-for-modern-fam/ https://www.facebook.com/GryphonSocial/videos/vb.797114007013053/1467374836653630/?type=2&theater They have some produced according to their facebook posts. They never actually showed the hardware anywhere in the project other than the box. One video shows screenshots of a PCB that is apparently the device itself. Honestly looks like a bog standard scam. $559,428 - Kickstarter $660,595 - Indiegogo $1,220,611 - Combined 11/2016 - Kickstarter/Indiegogo Tablet that supposedly supports windows and runs off SD cards (lol) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/smachteam/smach-z-the-handheld-gaming-pc/posts/1939242 https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/smach-z-the-handheld-gaming-pc-games#/updates Only physical device that seems to exist is the unit shown in videos. They changed hardware manufacturers and estimated Q1-2 2018 for completion of final product designs. $351,816 12/2016 Its the old VW soundwagon but with bluetooth https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pinkdonut/rokblok-a-new-spin-on-vinyl/comments Kind of boring since all the updates are for backers only. Maybe sort of kind of possibly starting production and potentially shipping before the end of the year. $580,902 07/2016 The new das keyboard https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1229573443/das-keyboard-5q-the-cloud-connected-keyboard/posts/1920253 They had FCC compliance issues with their PCB but may have fixed those issues. They expect to start actual production next month. Post documenting some drama from last year regarding the project. They were going to initially ship directly from the factory which would make some people have to pay 100+ extra to get it and handle all the importing themselves. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3536751&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=470#post467287296 $552,178 - Kickstarter $690,878 - Indiegogo $1,243,056 - Combined 10/2016 - Kickstarter 12/2016 - Indiegogo It's a hovering turn table https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/mag-lev-audio-the-first-levitating-turntable-vinyl#/updates https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/245727224/mag-lev-audio-the-first-levitating-turntable/posts/1962495 They are still trying to make a production prototype and apparently upgraded the arm but need to make custom modifications to it so it will work with their system. It seems kind of vague but they seem to be trying to make all of them by themselves. They are showing off prototypes but pictures of people looking at it almost look staged. The MSJ posted:That Endless Forest sequel Kickstarter better state what steps are they implementing to prevent another Goon Apocalypse. My estimation is they are going to make a custom client for connecting so they can ban individual accounts easily. Also it will allow remote code execution so they can install malware on your system for making them mad. Inevitably someone is going to reverse engineer it with extreme ease because lol they are unsurprisingly bad coders and find out that it all connects back to a completely open system running on their desktop and of course someone will take the joke too far and break everything and of course they never actually backed anything up. Then in around 10 years someone else/the only guy who still makes it will make a new crowdfunding project so they can write it in unity and call it endless unity.
