It was a "rare earth" because it was hard to find bits of it at the particular mine in Ytterby, Sweden where Arrhenius was searching. The so-called rare earth ended up yielding six or eight elements altogether. Once they knew what they were looking for, the mineral turned out to be not all that hard to find in the right geological formation.

The weirdest thing to me about that story is that some easily fireable person working at a hot dog shop (so probably not the owner or manager, so probably not a high paying job) took the time off and swallowed the expense to fly across the loving country just to visibly and loudly be a shitstain.
