guys, this is awesome.

quote:

The chaotic, war-torn West Wing of the past six months will be prologue, but the coming struggles will be as personal as they are ideological, waged not with leaks but with slashing Breitbart banners. On Sunday, Breitbart took renewed aim at McMaster, with a headline claiming he advocated “Quran Kissing.” But most of all, there’s a deep animosity between Bannon and Kushner, amplified by a lack of respect. Bannon finds Kushner’s political instincts highly questionable. “He said Jared is a dope,” one Bannon ally recalled. The two clashed fiercely on personnel decisions and policy debates, both domestic and international, many of which Bannon lost. But Bannon, who was the only West Wing advisor to publicly support the president’s response to the violence in Charlottesville, is especially galled at being scapegoated as an anti-Semite in its wake. “It’s one of the attacks he takes most personally because it’s not true,” a Breitbart staffer told me. Bannon’s allies lay out a more complicated backstory. Bannon, they say, lobbied Trump aggressively to move America’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but was blocked by Kushner. And, according to three Bannon allies, Bannon pushed a tougher line against the Palestinians than Kushner did. In May, when Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visited the White House, Bannon stayed home. “I’m not going to breathe the same air as that terrorist,” Bannon texted a friend.

These ships are multi-mission, they're only so big and there's only so many places you can stash people. That destroyer already crews over 300 people.

At any given time the bridge has 4-6 people on watch at a time and one of them is directly responsible to the CO for the safety of navigation and the operations of the ship. Do you think it's easy to qualify people to that position? That just anyone is going to be qualified?

I get your point, but it's not that easy. Think about what is going out in the western Pacific, we don't have enough ships, which means that the ships we do have, and their crews, are stressed beyond their limits and don't receive the training they need.

Fair points, I don't know much about the navy so thanks for the clarification.

There's quite a bit worth criticizing in Japanese culture but this is just like that Dr. Seuss cartoon that portrayed all Japanese American citizens like they were secret fifth columnists, the biggest difference is Suess was at least good at the medium. I'm down for making fun of trash anime and whatnot but just broadly and 100% seriously saying it's all proto-fascist propaganda is real dismissive of a entire culture and ranks as the most racist thing I've seen on this site in a long fuckin' time. It'd be like me saying hip-hop is all just pro-capitalist propaganda, that's just racist and culturally if it's not a qualified and targeted (or at least funny) criticism.

Sorry to drag this out but seriously it just weird and uncomfortable to see someone sum up a race and culture, even a pretty isolated one, in this sort of broad, unqualified disdain and seriousness.

Also, the last time I was in Japan (May) I came across a very, very nice camera just lying on the sidewalk in Tokyo. Being familiar with Japanese culture, I grabbed a coffee and watched that camera and the crowd. No one touched it. A couple of people stood over it, presumably wondering who they could turn it in to, before just giving up and moving on. I gave up watching after about an hour.

An acquaintance of mine took a school trip too Japan once, and she described it as a place where you could forget your purse on a bench and come back to get it hours later, but you might get chased down the street by a masturbating person.

tbh anime & video games are the japanese pop culture most likely to dunk on conservative japanese politics and ww2 revisionism short of actual literature railing against the system, because they're produced for such niche demographics that they don't have to worry about angering people and they're made on such shoestring timescales that nobody has the time to go through them to see if maybe this might secretly be anti-government propaganda.

the guy who started comiket, which is where anime fancomics and fangames and stuff are sold and is a huge part of anime fan culture, was basically proto-japanese antifa and threw rocks at conservative politicians and got thrown in jail a couple of times. there's always been kind of a link between anti-government sentiment and anime nerd poo poo in japan, though as it's gotten more popular there's been more right wing-y anime, and the prestige stuff to come out of there like ghibli has obviously been pretty apolitical/conservative in a folksy way. still, it's pretty baked into the building blocks of the subculture, which makes it funnier that anime is for some reason an alt. right stereotype in the us. it's not like huge swaths of the anime industry are pointed criticisms of abenomics or anything but there's usually an undercurrent of that kind of thing in a lot of shows and gintama, for instance, is an insanely popular comedy that has dedicated multiple full-length episodes to nothing but jokes about prominent conservative politicians.

Disclaimer: ADTRW resident so take this with the same amount of salt as a TFR goon popping in to discuss guns but yeah, a lot of Japanese anime echoes the pacifism their society overwhelmingly embraced after WWII. Like, some of the most striking anti-war and anti-nuclear warfare media are anime like Barefoot Gen and the earlier Gundam's are fairly critical of war.

*Recent* anime is slowly shifting, with Gate being the most egregious standout example of more assured assertive media when it comes to war, militerism, etc; but even with Gate if it weren't for the white washing of Japanese military history it wouldn't have been any more jingoistic than Stargate SG1.

You have a lot of younger people getting into anime, joining the military as a profession, and getting into animation who range across a spectrum of ideologies and viewpoints such as 'guns and explosions are cool' and people who fundamentally misunderstood the point of early Gundam.

Heavy Object is a recent interesting example of military thriller anime that reads like what if Tom Clancy ghost wrote a script for an anime series because the way the characters talk and the general plot screams Clancy technothriller and is legitimately interesting to study on its meta on what it says about shifting Japanese attitudes on war and peace; but it and most other media isn't outright saying "Lets rearm and take over China".

Gintama is a great show because of how political it is and how much it shits on cons. Also, Gintoki is the best shonen protagonist since he's intentionally a subversion: a middle-aged unambitious out of work layabout with a drinking problem a gambling problem and suffering from PTSD.

Seriously, you should be watching and/or reading. While an anime filler fucks it up on this, it's one of the few Japanese anime that I've seen in a mainstream series that has a very stern pro-lgbt storyline.
