When Stain first made his rounds in the manga yonks ago I figured he looked like that because he was a burn victim courtesy of Endeavor, maybe as collateral or something and it was covered up, and thats where the insane crusade started. Pure natural edgelord combined with several thousand bats worth of guano works too I guess. Knuckledusters "No one said I couldn't cross the line" bit was a fantastic summery of the character.
