It's amazing the amount of ignorance people have about how history is told. When you take a history class or do any kind of significant historical research, statues usually don't play a major part in any of that poo poo. It's not "erasing history". All of the history that is supposedly being erased is still in the same loving place it has always been: in historical books, journals, and in archives.

I live by the park that one of the Baltimore statues was in, and work by one of the others. I can say with 98% confidence that most people who live around those things were happy to see them go; most of the local objection I've seen is from idiots from the horribly white bread surrounding suburbs, who're probably too afraid of the city to step foot in either park, but still seem to think they should have a say in what goes on here. Proud of the mayor for the way she handled it, and I hope something goes up in their place that honors people who, y'know, actually have something to do with the city.

The popular response making the rounds right now is a very sarcastic "I was going to tell you about how awful a person Hitler was, but unfortunately we don't have any statues of him to go look at."

In the 1930s and 1940s some people went around the South lugging some really big recording equipment and interviewed a bunch of slaves. Those recordings somehow surfaced in 1999 and there was a television broadcast segment about them here:

Think it’s hard for the white working class in rural America? Try being a person of color.

quote:

Since Trump’s election, there has been ample coverage of white people—the rise of white nationalism, the white working class that makes up Trump’s core constituency, the 53 percent of white women who voted him into office. Much less has been written about the people of color who live and work amid the rising tide of white nationalism in rural red states.

Madyson Turner: “With the way it’s going now, I’m actually scared that I won’t make it.”

I remember high-school Madyson Turner as a vibrant young black woman with a sense of humor that could dissipate tension in any room. (Turner’s name has been changed here to protect her privacy.) But when we meet up in a Subway sandwich shop in Alamo, there’s a new weight to her shoulders, and her infectious laugh doesn’t come quite so easily.

This is not on-topic for this thread, because no one in the Trump admin is black except for Omarosa and Bullet Farmer, but he's right. Trump is a shitlord and a Republican but "alt-right" is something specific and he's not it. He parrots everything they say, but he does that with anyone. It is going to be interesting to see what changes now that Bannon's gone.

I'm pretty much at the point where "confederate/lost cause"/Nazi/"Alt-Right" falls under the same umbrella.

If someone stands with or otherwise supports Nazis that is pretty much a one way ticket to "gently caress that person forever".

What is really hosed up is it took literal Nazi rallies to prompt the removal of Confederate monuments to slavery.

I dread wading back into this since HotCanadianChick is going to call me a Bannon defender again (you loving idiot), but gently caress this, terminology matters and "both things bad so both things same" is dangerously lazy. There is more than one type of right-winger in the US. They are all bad, but there are differences between the factions and ignoring them to make some point about how you hate right-wingers the mostest is more than stupid, it's dangerous.

Just because someone isn't technically alt-right doesn't mean I like them, you loving morons.

Words have meaning, some very specific meaning. If Bernie Bros can bitch about not wanting to be called the "Alt-Left" because Donald Trump lumped everyone together, then we can be just as detailed about our terminology too.

Arghhhhh...
1. This is a thread about black people and black issues. The alt-right are categorically not black, so why the gently caress are we talking about them in here.
2. No one is saying the alt-right aren't humongous racist pieces of poo poo. But seriously, words mean things. Just because a person is bad, and a group of people are bad, doesn't mean that bad person is a member of that bad group. If I told you Hitler was not a member of the Khmer Rouge that does not mean I think Hitler's a great guy.

I think it is a bit more complex than that. Alt-right for the most part does mean racist shitheads. But they are racist poo poo-heads that oppose quite a few things that other Republicans are all for such as trade deals and foreign intervention. The poo poo Trump campaigned on in terms of a lot of that stuff is being reneged on while he maintains his racist shitstain ways. It's why quite a few people on the left were pushing for Trump, because they felt Hillary was more hawkish than Trump was on foreign affairs.

Anyways, back to Black people.

What I like about Tiny Brontosaurus is how many people she has gotten to come around on their attitudes about race. On the Internet, there's very little incentive to change your opinion and when you combine it with white privilege there's even less. As other posters have joked, the barriers to allyship are tissue thin, and it mainly requires listening to people of color and their experiences. Reading through the thread can give you a lot of resources.

Confirming this--I've been learning a lot about myself and about other people's experiences thanks to her calling out disrespectful and hateful behaviour.

Brainbread posted:

It's a bit of an old article, and I would link the research paper but since I'm no longer a student I don't have access to all those lovely scholarly libraries.

It's related to the topic of transracialism, in that one's own self-perception of race and others perception of one's race can change with incarceration.

Such that once incarcerated, interviewee's and interviewers were both more likely to identify an individual as black even if they were identified as being white before.

The study was called "The Race of a Criminal Record: How Incarceration Colors Racial Perceptions" if anyone has access to the Journal.

Sci-hub is a great resource if you don't have academic subscriptions to journals (or a good local library, as was already mentioned). Just paste the DOI number in their search box and it'll probably turn up, keyword/author search is broken though. "The Race of a Criminal Record: How Incarceration Colors Racial Perceptions" is DOI: 10.1525/sp.2010.57.1.92

There's a cool woman behind Sci-hub and it's a great story on its own:

quote:

On September 5th, 2011, Alexandra Elbakyan, a researcher from Kazakhstan, created Sci-Hub, a website that bypasses journal paywalls, illegally providing access to nearly every scientific paper ever published immediately to anyone who wants it. The website works in two stages, firstly by attempting to download a copy from the LibGen database of pirated content, which opened its doors to academic papers in 2012 and now contains over 48 million scientific papers. The ingenious part of the system is that if LibGen does not already have a copy of the paper, Sci-hub bypasses the journal paywall in real time by using access keys donated by academics lucky enough to study at institutions with an adequate range of subscriptions. This allows Sci-Hub to route the user straight to the paper through publishers such as JSTOR, Springer, Sage, and Elsevier. After delivering the paper to the user within seconds, Sci-Hub donates a copy of the paper to LibGen for good measure, where it will be stored forever, accessible by everyone and anyone.

This was a game changer. Before September 2011, there was no way for people to freely access paywalled research en masse; researchers like Elbakyan were out in the cold. Sci-Hub is the first website to offer this service and now makes the process as simple as the click of a single button.

As the number of papers in the LibGen database expands, the frequency with which Sci-Hub has to dip into publishers’ repositories falls and consequently the risk of Sci-Hub triggering its alarm bells becomes ever smaller. Elbakyan explains, “We have already downloaded most paywalled articles to the library ... we have almost everything!” This may well be no exaggeration. Elsevier, one of the most prolific and controversial scientific publishers in the world, recently alleged in court that Sci-Hub is currently harvesting Elsevier content at a rate of thousands of papers per day. Elbakyan puts the number of papers downloaded from various publishers through Sci-Hub in the range of hundreds of thousands per day, delivered to a running total of over 19 million visitors.
