On Tuesday, President Donald Trump revoked an Obama-era executive order establishing the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard (FFRMS) designed to reduce the risk and cost of future flood disasters. Plus they picked someone who actually knows about disaster preparation and response (you can debate about how good he is at it tho) instead of like, Pat Robertson. Clearly the party picked that guy

tbf in that respect he's just following the time-honored traditions of the republican party

the guy bush ii put in charge of fema's experience was as a commissioner of some horse association. as you might imagine that is one of the reasons katrina didn't go so well.

by not nominating anyone at all at least the person in charge is a career person with limited powers instead of a wildly unqualfied idiot

I was actually going on about Creationism, which is a really stubborn subsect of Christianity that attempts to hinder science. Catholicism has its own issues with the whole "buying your way out of sin thing", but it's not Americas cross to bear.

Coming from a catholic upbringing, I feel one of the problems is that people believe that simply being religious is enough for the golden ticket into heaven. The most devout Catholics I know had no problem reasoning away terrible things they've done, because at least they go to church on Sunday and pay the tithe.

Also there's a pretty dangerous line of thinking that God indeed works everything out in the background. That itself isn't problematic, but it makes it easy to go "the poor will be taken care of by the Lord" as you mark your ballot to kill poor people.

Also this is a random aside, but in my experience, the leftist candidates are never ever moral choices to vote for, because of abortion. I know a crazy amount of people who are more or less moderate, but still vote right candidates because abortion is murder and the church is unwavering on that front. I absolutely refuse to believe the Catholic Church, or Christian churches in general, will change their stance on that in ten, or even twenty years.

NOAA can run just fine without a head, honestly. It, really the NWS, routinely handles weather events every day.

I'd say the bigger impact is not having an advocate for funding. That has hurt the agency in the long run.

A competently-run FEMA is not a good thing in the hands of this government. At least Brownie might accidentally drop some food on poor people after a hurricane, instead of competently ordering the National Guard to shoot any coloreds looters on sight.

As a Catholic it amazes me how much of its problems could be solved with common sense/decency and that making said changes wouldn't cause the collapse or destroy the institution. institutions that persist based on a thousand years of tradition and orthodoxy don't permit change very often, it's one of the prerequisites for their existence. in the US the gay friendly catholic-lite sect are the Episcopalians
