If I have kids, they're getting the gently caress out of the house after they graduate highschool. I know too many 28 year olds who have been living with their parents for the last 10 years while finishing undergrad.

Local recruiting station will get them right out of the house.

It's a lot more complicated when the Army isn't backing the move, passports, or anything else. That and admit that going places and doing things, while enjoyable now, was cheaper and easier before children.

My dad gave me this so, I'll likely pass it on to them. "I'll give you food, I'll give you shelter, if you call me at 2 AM and need me to come get you, I will without consequence. But I will never lend you money."

I wasn't talking just about Army moving. My wife is European and I have family in Asia. We try for at least one overseas family trip every year or so.

It is expensive, but it's doable if you get leave during the off seasons for airline fares. Also if you go to an airport with a direct flight.

I'm planning a trip to istanbul for a week and I'm fairly certain I can keep it under 5,000 bucks.

I'll let my kids stay at home until they are 22 if they are making actual effort to get a degree. If they're just loving around I don't care to pay for that. Maybe I'll let them stay if they pay rent but my rates will be steep.

Yeah but I can't afford that? I'm just saying, given the options, travel more before kids. You can always go back somewhere but the exploration part is sooooo much easier than if it is with kids your first time. I know this because my first experience with that was someone abandoning my rear end with my wife, newborn, 2 dogs and PCS suitcases at the wrong goddamn terminal and refused to help me so I had to run everywhere on two recently operated on legs while my wife sat like a gypsy with all of these bags and I'm trying to get these dogs registered and if we hadn't had met some nice and understanding Germans, I would have missed my flight and holy poo poo would that have been the worst goddamn thing. My 1SG had recently given me like a 4/2 or some weird poo poo on my NCOER even though she wasn't in my rating chain. It went up as a 2/2. Missing a flight would have been an egregious sin. I was treated worse than someone who literally murdered someone and was on trial for it

Seriously.

The dude that abandoned me wa someone who had a habit of screwing people over. For instance, he hosed me over (naturally) but he got into a DUI accident, had surgery, no repruccusions and someone who was going to the field for a few months said 'don't stay at the barracks, stay at my place and watch over it. My car too (Escalade)."

He proceeded to put a microwave next to the toilet or something, gave a copy of the house key to his girlfriend, leave used condoms all over the place, broke the bed, broke some stuff in the Escalade, and left a big steaming junk of mess requiring about two days of heavy cleaning to get rid of the trash and food stuffs.

So I'm not just saying that to bitch, dude was a loving tool. He's the one that got wounded twice and made a career out of being a loving idiot who could compulsively lie and believe it.

So I been letting my ETS guys call in for PT and go gently caress off until they gi on terminal leave. Well one of my E4 was not able to take terminal because the 3 months I let him take care of his transition, he didn't do anything. His ETS day is next week and he still haven't empty his locker out of CIF to start cleaning it. And now he wants someone to escort him around all day because he has no car or a license.

What the gently caress? That guy is going to be homeless as gently caress. How do you gently caress up clearing and waste all your terminal leave? How are you such a failure that you're 23 and can't drive?

I inherited about 45 ETS/PCS guys from all the platoons before our transition plus 5 art 15 chap dudes so it's been a pain in the rear end to keep track of everyone. This dude is 15% over body fat, his old PSG has been forging his ABC paperwork and apparently he hasn't passed an APFT in over a year either so there's no chance in hell he'll be able to reenlist. The only reason why we let that slide, is because by the time his old PSG left was because he was 90 days out from terminal leave and it was decided that it was easier to just let him get out then let that poo poo drag on with a chapter.

But I'm about to make one of my three NCOs escort him everywhere. I got one NCO who is about to get the boot for a DUI/crashing into a church, another who has an ankle bracelet and has to meet his PO weekly for his fast and furious race + car crash, and my only squared away one who's transitioning out next week and able to drive. Sucks to be the squared away one who never gets in trouble.

The worst has been the PCS/ETS awards. I made sure the 15 soldiers from my old PLT was good to go and about 90% of them were approved within the first two weeks. I just took this PLT over about a month ago and went on leave for 2 weeks and before I left, I found out about 2/3 of the soldiers sent to me had no awards written, there was no rough drafts, none of them had levy briefs done, or was even prepared for it their PCS or know what to do. So now it's been an uphill battle to get everything done because the majority of them are leaving mid Sept.

It doesn't help that the division made us do all our team, sqd, plt, company training, NTC, support National Guard and the other BDE for their NTC rotation, just to come back and disband 3 months later. We literally had no time to prep for losing every goddamn 11B at once.

The best part of all this is, the first people to leave were the NCOs. So for every 20 e1 to e4 running around, there's one NCO. The BDE as a whole been sucking major dick with discipline problems due to this. Coke, weed, guns, alcohol problems has been ridiculous the last 2-3 months.

We had a platoon of chapters.

Not ETS/PCS. Those guys stayed in their platoons. But after deployment we had so many drug busts and DUIs that our HQ platoon became the chapter platoon.

Those fuckers showed up to first formation and bounced. Never did details (and if they did, everyone was doing the detail). Never did PT. Never really did poo poo. The only thing they did was pull CQ runner more than the other platoons.

You know how people get married to get out of the barracks? That's what that platoon was for drug use.

It varies, IMO.

Most of the time it's just demonstrating that your leadership isn't so lazy or angry at you that they're willing to spend like 30 minutes writing up the award, and then 2 minutes fixing the corrections.

On some rare occasions, it's been a chance for me to look at someone who got hosed out of a deserving award for [dumb reason here] and fix it as they leave service. For one guy, he knew full well it meant nothing at all for job prospects, but he and his spouse also knew he'd been put in for a higher award like 4 times, but every time after the first "nope" from bigwigs, his company leadership wussed out or were too lazy to edit their writing. I say this not to say I'm cool and good, but to say how easy it not just ignore people: I wrote like a 2 paragraph letter that took about 10 minutes that said essentially "if this award isn't good enough, yell at me for being a lovely writer, don't punish him, with his multiple combat tours and zero black marks on his record." Award made it through at that point! He still knew it didn't mean much for jobs and such, but his spouse, who I didn't even really know all that well, was crying just because someone finally acknowledged him.

Yeah. At my first unit, I had three trainees assigned to me who came back completely broken from basic and had to be med-boarded out (in the Army Reserve you're assigned to your unit before you ship to basic). One had a spiral fracture in his leg. They all had to show up to drill for several months on crutches before the paperwork finally went through. Kind of sucks to be 18 and basically never able to walk correctly again because of a few weeks of working out. On the other hand, I guess they were all going to get free money for life, if that's any consolation.
