All in all, it amounted to £2,200 which is about $2,800.

£1,500 for the pledge "Be a Jameson", the rest in supporting a novel and a crapton of merchandise.

I did get hundreds of hours of good times out of it though, so money's not completely wasted.

I wanted to support the game of my dreams, but it deviated too far from what I imagined, and ended up feeling too empty, grindy and shallow for my tastes.

By Star Citizen standards hes gotten away with highway robbery. He pledged way too much money on a game with realistic scope, that came out basically on time (?) and is a pretty good example of the genre while not perfect.

Elite Dangerous released 9 months late - it was originally estimated at March 2014 in the Kickstarter. Horizons is also taking much longer than players guessed (thought roughly a year). The expansions (spacelegs, ship boarding, station interiors) and gameplay additions/improvements are arriving at a really slow pace than many would like.

Frontier should open 4 new studios internationally, hire 300 new devs, and follow the genius example set by Crobberts, to get the game fidelified.

For everything dumb that Chris Roberts has done with Star Citizen, picking CryEngine irreparably hosed the game from the word go.

I don't believe this. CR could not have even done any better with a custom engine.

Blaming everything on CryEngine is giving CR an unfair way out. A talented developer with good programmers could have done something. Might not be Star Citizen, but it would be closer.

CR can't even get a single ground level to work in CryEngine.

Don't even fork blame from CR to CryEngine anymore. This is his complete failure, and it does not matter which engine he used. It would have been equally ruined.

What I want(ed)? I don't really know... It's odd.

It's easier for me to explain when I realized I didn't want to play E:D anymore. It was when I realized that nothing I did in the game had any impact on anything whatsoever. It became a grind for money and rank (exploration/trading/combat).

The "storylines" in the game moved on, whether I participated or not. Engineers was an ok idea, but was just more grind, same goes for factions.

Looking back, I got caught up in the buzz - like so many SC backers today. In a lot ways I understand them, but IMHO sunk cost fallacy will never make SC playable.

I don't regret spending the money, but I wouldn't do it again. It was an awesome journey, and I don't think the game is a bad game - it's just not for me.

Yeah it's a lot of money, but to me it's all about prioritizing. I'm by no means a rich guy, I have a crappy middle income job, but I simply prioritize. Some people spend $2800 to buy a car, some people buy a horse, some spend it on tickle porn and coke, some spend it on avatars on a crappy comedy forum - I spent it on E:D.

An even more sinister view is Cryengine is responsible for any success he's had to this point. It may not get the space game made, but it might have been why it got funded. Imagine how it would have been different if they couldn't make good looking, high quality assets from the drop. Cryengine certainly makes a good looking trailer or static bullshot. Could they have done that in the beginning while building their own engine? Could they have lasted long enough for the engine to be far enough along to produce a few concepts? Honestly, based on what I know of the backers now, he probably could have funded this thing on pencil drawings. Still an interesting question.

That's not to say they would have made with a custom engine, no. Not with Chris at the helm.

Apparently something to do with the fact that the build he is supposed to be showing on Fri, is the SAME build they are streaming now, and that Lando saying stuff was disabled implies that there is another build with enabled things - which is false, since that build doesn't actually run reliably enough. They still haven't finished the branch. Apparently they have TWO branches of the same 3.0, and they spent quite a bit of time on this specific build branch for GC2017, hoping to get a better build for Chris's presentation.

Calm down, big boy. There is only one build. That build is locked to daymar only on a private server. If they had people playing around and quantum jumping all over the place in the full, unlocked build, no one would see each other in the play-throughs.
