The Horror at Red Hook is particularly bad IIRC. I try my best to sort of phase it out as a historical thing with a "they were really racist back then" attitude.

He was pretty abnormally racist even for his time. The mainstream white opinion back then was certainly closer to his views than today's, but Lovecraft really goes out of his way to make disparaging comments about non-WASPs.

A good point of comparison may be Robert Howard who wrote the Conan the Barbarian stories. He also wrote a lot of stereotypical non-white characters and mentioned race mixing as a symptom of social degeneracy, but didn't get quite as creepy about it.

Democratic socialism is still the best form of government and if enacted on a super large scale through some magic of technology, would be best.

Also ill reiterate again since its relevant: citizenship should be earned

Someone needs to nuke Wales on April the 1st. Reasons:

1. People would stop using the term "The size of Wales" for good
2. We would stop having the most predictable and boring pranks happen every year rendering articles and videos useless for three days (due to time differences)
3. No one cares about Wales.

Democratic socialism, within a fascist framework, a very ecclectic choice if I may say so.

I don't know if I'd attach it to voting rights, but working retail is a crushing experience everyone should have, if only to gain perspective. Really, any service industry would probably do the trick.

e: Although part of what is crushing about it is knowing it's a necessity because there isn't another option if you want to afford a place to live/food to eat. It's pretty hard to mandate that particular set of circumstances.

I work in retail. Instead of it being mandatory you should be punished by working one year in retail if you are caught being rude to a retail employee three times within a year. They will have to think about what an awful human being they are every time they have to say "paper or plastic"!

Or maybe high school classes can include teaching people how not to be assholes in everyday situations since apparently no parents teach it in america.

There should also be public punishments for stuff like littering like in Singapore. Bamboo stick to the rear end in front of people all day long.

Parents probably reinforce those behaviours by being big shits too. They give the kids a false idea that making harsh demands and asking to speak to their manager is a way to stand up for yourself and get what you are owed. Perhaps retail is the only cure.

I admire Singapore on some level. As far as dictatorships go, it's tremendously successful: Excellent schools, affordable healthcare, clean, great transit systems, safe at all hours... It was kinda magical after hanging around Bangladesh what with their strict classism, terrible pollution, questionable medical options and, y'know... Those roving rape gangs. A Bengali family member in Malaysia adores it there and tells me Bangladesh has just gotten so, so much worse these last few years. :(

I get that you can compel somebody to do it. You just can't compel them to be poor and/or desperate. Unless they maybe already are, I guess? but then you wouldn't need to.

As it turns out dictatorship is actually kind of rad for an incredibly rich country the size of a postage stamp.

Devices like 'Alexa' are disturbing. It's like real-life HAL 9000 in our own households, and the reports of these things automatically ordering stuff from online retailers after hearing someone mention an item in passing is more than unsettling. Big Brother is here, and it's many of the devices we think we can't live without.

You hit the nail on the head in terms of size, but the dictatorship also had a hefty hand in creating and maintaining that wealth. It was a spectacular set of circumstances where the dude seizing all the power was actually interested in building something greater than himself, which I don't expect to ever see happen again. Singapore's a fluke. It was just so nice to not feel the Sword of Damocles for a bit. :sigh:

But size is definitely key. Communism can certainly be functional in small groups but the bigger you get, the sooner you find a sociopath with political aspirations. And it only takes one.

I think it's a stupid thing to buy too but the big brother thing is overreacting by quite a bit. I mean yeah the NSA etc are probably able to listen through them, but what can't they listen through nowadays? I know it's not always true with law enforcement, but generally if you're a normal law-abiding citizen who isn't concocting some terrorist plot in front of your alexa, you don't really have anything to worry about from them listening to you.

Anyway Singapore is nice and all but it's hardly a utopia and I don't think their good points should be praised while brushing the bad stuff under the rug.

Those NES and SNES classic systems are loving stupid. It's incredibly easy to play any of those games a multitude of ways, even legally through a Wii you could buy for like $10 if you don't already have one you are using as a paper weight. People losing their minds over a glorified version of those junk consoles you can buy at the flea market.

The only selling point they'd have for me is they are probably easier to hook up to modern TVs than the old ones.

Generally I agree with you though. It's just not the same if you aren't playing with the actual console and a physical copy of the game. I can't describe logically how it is different, but like playing a rom even of some of my favorite games just isn't as interesting/fun. It's just a transparent cash-in on the obsession with "retro" everything. I also hate it because it's going to make it harder for me to sell my old stuff because everyone will say "why pay you 100 dollars for that top loading NES console when I could just buy the NES classic" etc.

your old stuff has no inherent value due to being old, if it's useless it's not anyone else's fault you can't sell it

I never said it was valuable simply because it is old. It has value because of rarity and because some people are willing to pay for it. Even with these new "classic" things coming out there will still be a market - just a slightly smaller one.

Also platos poo poo is loving dumb as hell in modern terms even if he said half of what he's quoted as saying, and when it comes to ancient history he probably didn't say any of it
