I have a Plan for Dave. If we can find him a cheap running Corvair in the Seattle area, there is no reason he can't make it to Valentine. Corvair = Easy to fix, can carry a lot of stuff, cruises well on highways... I'd be willing to take a collection for a Corvair for Dave as long as he gets his license back. Stay safe, 14" ghost. Remember the First Rule of Burning Man. Anyone with drugs is a cop. There are half a dozen local, state, and federal agencies out there for whom the Burn is a huge moneymaker because they can hit out of state idiots on easy charges on federal land to keep their numbers looking good come budget time.

I suspect the truck is going to roll into Florida engulfed in flames, but somehow still in better condition than it started in.

I imagine when the truck actually gets rolling and moving towards Florida, every AI goon ing the entire two days or whatever it takes (probably two weeks really) and when it finally gets to its new home all of AI collectively screaming HAIL SATAN!!! So I've tried to earn an honest $5 For going on 3 days now and have tried begging, panhandling, selling stuff, bartering, finding and returning two stolen bikes, and have raised a grand total of $0.00 during that time period. What's the mod position on travel supply needs?

Are there the amazon shipping lockers on the way, we can fill them with treasures along the route. Otherwise biking with a 18 lb 5 gallon bucket of powdered eggs is going to make the going slower.

Main issue is many things I've been trying to get are needed to get started. Pannier bags, front and rear brake pads, a hammock, tubes, my shoes are about worn through so size 11 SPD clip bike shoes.

nm posted:Don't trade that bike for something with front suspension FFS. Suspension+touring=pain. This man speaks the truth. Front suspension is shity for anything not mountain biking, and is also poo poo. for mountain biking too until you get into really expensive bikes. All it is gonna do translate a portion of your pedaling energy into motion that does not move you forward.

Hammocks require fairly closely spaced trees to work.

they're also very very bad for heat retention

Never posted before, despite lurking for a while- hail satan. But, I have been camping in a hammock regularly for a while now. It is absolutely impossible to sleep in a hammock overnight(in almost all temps) without a camping pad. So that is #1 priority. And they can be cheap- there's no real need to get the expensive ones for this purpose, a foam lightweight camping pad will do fine. After that, it's temperature dependent on heavy sleepingbag, layers, hats, etc is necessary. But under insulation is level 1 must have.

basically a hammock saves you money vs. a good backpacking tent, but once you add in the required pads/insulation/etc, they really don't save you that much in space or weight. Might be easier to pack into panniers vs. a tent though, and the money thing is a big deal. A bigger issue is having places everywhere you want to sleep where you can set up a hammock... or a tent... or whatever. You can't just bike down the interstate, either, so you're gonna need to meticulously plan your trip, stopping points, legal and safe places to camp, etc.

Might be easier to pack into panniers vs. a tent though, and the money thing is a big deal. Volume isn't really a major issue when bike touring, within reasoning. This is what my touring bike looks like for a 2 week tour: That big yellow thing hold my tent (a 2+ man UL tent) and by bag (a bulky long big agnes synth bag). The rest of those bags are basically half empty. The backpack is for holding food like fruits and vegetables that would go bad in a waterproof pannier. The panniers had all the clothes that wouldn't fit in the front panniers plus my stuffable sleeping pad. You can do this without my big yellow drybag (though it is really nice -- otherwise you need to line your stuff sacks with garbage bags which will tear when you least want then too), you just use some webstraps and cinch your tent and bag (and sleeping pad, if you have a traditional pad) down to the rack. If you are going to run a rear rack only, then volume is an issue and you don't want to waste pannier space on sleeping gear. As for places to stay: https://www.warmshowers.org/. In rural areas if you look presentable (ahem, dave), you can get a surprising number of people who will let you sleep in their yards in rural areas. Many will even offer. That said, it is good to plan around knowing you have somewhere to sleep within a reasonable distance. I've not toured in Nebraska, but one of the people who hosted me this spring said it is her favorite place to tour. nm fucked around with this message at 06:36 on Aug 25, 2017 |

I slept in an indoors hammock for a few months, the thermal side of things im well aware of and have a mylar space blanket plus a roll mat that straps to my backpack, and have a possible source for a free 3 seasons compression sack sleeping bag. Planning? There's like two, maybe, routes into Current issues, lighting and locking. I have one short short Abus u lock, and had the other lock I use cut off while i was in the store for like 5 minutes the other day. And my front light is garbage after the decent theft resistant one was stolen, and the rear doesnt like cargo.

By my reckoning this is what, a 3 day tour? (North Platte to Valentine IIRC?) Honestly, you don't need to carry that much. I don't know that you *need* a different bike. However, if you want to, you want to look for a touring bike. The surly long haul trucker is the tried and true, but they hold values. An old trek 520 would be very suitable. The fuji touring bike, if you can find one, retails for only like $700, so can be fairly easily had for $500 used, again if you can find one. Something like a surly cross-check would be suitable too and doesn't have the markup of the LHT. Locking is less of an issue that you think. People don't know how to steal bikes in BFE. Bring a big cable lock so you can lock around a tree or picnic bench as there won't be bike racks anywhere. Light? Honestly, you shouldn't be touring at night. Even if you're doing 10mph, 60 miles is 6 hours. You can get that done in the daylight. Bring a light for backup purposes, but it doesn't need to be that good. I'd focus on getting a really sweet rear light (see my B&M rack mounted light) over a front light. I'd leave the rear light on when riding. Get one that takes AAs, bring a few AAs, and you're good. nm fucked around with this message at 06:47 on Aug 25, 2017 |
