I mean, yeah, for sure coastal areas are going to get hosed by the surge, but the real issue is going to be Austin, Houston, etc getting 2-3x their annual rainfall in a 2-3 day span. Flooding is gonna be bad, yo.

Would also work as a character in a cyberpunk novel. But yeah apparently the plant in Matagorda County, one of the two nuke plants in the state, is vulnerable to being knocked out by an upstream dam failure. I'm ready for the Matagorda Zone. Depending on when they were developed a lot of them will be grandfathered into the more stringent codes and into the NFIP. The beaches here have a ton of one story homes in an area with a base flood elevation of 5 or so feet. Couple that with rain and high tide and some areas are boned unless they're elevated. I'm about to leave for another flight into Harvey. It's movement is slow and it's sitting on a warm eddy so it's intensifying rapidly. It was declared a hurricane as we flew into it yesterday, and was tickling CAT 2 when we left. We are deploying a mapping aircraft tomorrow to survey damage, etc, but if it's does major damage I'm sure our emergency response role with be more intense.

Something about killing industry, unemployment going up, the economy suffering, taxing people to build solar panels, somethingsomething. Then I asked what the worst possible outcome of believing climate change is a hoax is, if it is indeed real. He kind of stumbled through a response about how it's a hoax so he doesn't need to entertain the idea of it being real.

The first ship has crossed the Northern Shipping Route from Europe to Asia without an icebreaker. This is a first, and a bad sign for the health of the ice there. Not good.

It's just a difference in class and type. Yeah, it's not an "icebreaker" in the traditional sense. It's an LNG ship. But it's Arc7 rating is actually better in some ways or equal to the Icebreaker6 designation many of the purpose built Russian icebreakers have.

Madurai posted:I am old, and thus remember when SS Manhattan did it in--what? 1971? Manhattan had a two icebreaker escort. Ships have been doing the Northwest Passage unassisted for a while now, albeit occasionally. Every few years a shipping company will pull a stunt like this and get media attention, it's basically meaningless. This is a good ice year, meaning there's not a whole lot of ice in the Arctic. It's a single data point, not a sure fire sign of global warming. Is the trend worrysome? drat right. Arc7 is between PC 3 and 4. That thing is an icebreaker. Wake me up when they pull that poo poo in the winter and turn a profit doing it.
