It hurts my brain trying to understand how someone does such a thing. Those people don't really understand the meaning of 'progressive', 'socialist' or 'human-being'. Those are just stand in words for 'thing good' in their heads, and they went from voting for one candidate who said he would tip the apple cart to another candidate who said he would tip the apple cart. It's lovely and moronic but it makes sense to me. This is no different than right-wing shitheads who think they have a gotcha moment when they say "National Socialist!!!" , or talk about Democrats being the party of the KKK. Those people don't even oppose Communism or Socialism on ideological grounds because they are literally too stupid to understand ideology. They just are stand in words for 'thing bad', so you'll get literal Nazis calling those resisting them Fascists.

Owlofcreamcheese posted:My absolute least favorite thing is people calling clinton "Abuela" over and over. Like I get it, she said it first herself, so it's her fault she got that nickname and her saying it was even actually problematic and that made it a perfect cover for people to hiss it out as a perfect sum up of the right wing talking points on why she is unfit to be president: She's a woman, She's a (grand)mother, and she's (something something) mexicans. And every bernie thread you can always see the grossest mix of people that say that name as just some whatever nickname she brought on herself and people saying it 100% with all the right wing venom that is the reason people on right wing forums also use that nickname. I thought people called her dread abuela because it showed how utterly out of touch and un-savvy (and racist) she was to try and brand herself that way.

It hurts my brain trying to understand how someone does such a thing. This is actually, literally, the problem. We're so inclined to see ourselves and our selfselected cohort as The Good Guys that we minimize and diminish any reports to the contrary. The Trumpkin upthread referenced WaPo polling that showed a distressingly high number of Clintonites (low 30%s?) had hosed up racial attitudes. They aren't the Clintonites I choose to spend my time around, but I can understand the difference between my antiracist social circle and the broader community. It's why I don't frothingly police any mention of lovely Hillbots. You can ask Lange, Jeong, or any number of media personalities what happens if you suggest there's something malignant about a portion of SandersSupporters. Or you can just read KM's posts and not immediately assume she's full of poo poo? See also:White Women dealing with their bloc voting for Trump. As with Trump and Nazis, as with Clinton and racists, as with Obama and WallStreet, you can argue that the ties and proportion of bigoted Sanders supporters are being overblown to smear the whole group. It can be done without minimizing the effect those people have had on their targets, in a way that resonates authentically and wins converts to your side. Or you can turn it into an ironic punchline meant to ignore any problems. It turns out doing latter sends a strong exclusionary message to people who've witnessed or experienced that shitiness first hand.
