I think it's important to realize facism is inherently opportunistic. It will always try to appeal to the largest amount of the dominant group. In Germany's case, this meant trading in Paganism for Protestantism. Another example is how Mussolini was privately an atheist, but publicly made nice with the papacy.

Facism doesn't want to change things, it wants to accumulate as much power as possible and that involves being as palatable as possible to the volk at large.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "extremely Protestant phenomenon", but I'd say that you're spot on with the second paragraph. Nazis opportunistically used Christianity when it suited them and discarded it when it did not. The various Protestant churches were far easier to bend to their will than the highly hierarchical Catholic church, and Hitler always maintained a high degree of fear for the power of the Catholic church. The degree to which the Church influenced the lives of Catholics is something that we really only see today in the U.S. with the LDS church, and while I'm sure that Hitler would have loved to put Nazi banners up in the Catholic churches too, he never felt comfortable enough to try it. That kind of power being held by the Catholic church today is significantly harder for many of us to envision, but understanding it is key to understanding the Nazi relationship with Christianity.

As for Protestants (and it breaks my heart as a Lutheran to say this), they were far more willing to work with the Nazis and, some notable exceptions like Friedrich Bonhoeffer aside, put up far less resistance than the Catholics did. If the Nazi regime had managed to survive, I think you would have seen a state push towards something like Positive Christianity as a stepping stone towards something like the Roman deification of the Emperor.

Yeah it swerves a bit hokey at times, but as Vincent Van Goatse points out it appears more to modern readers than it would have at the time.

I'm describing National Socialism as a specific subset of facism, one that was dominated by, and geared towards the urban cities of North Germany. There where other facist parties in Weimar Germany

I didn't mean to imply that there was something inherently fascist about Protestantism. Sorry if you took it that way.

The NDSAP's base was largely urban Protestants. Hell the Austrian Catholic Fascists objected to the Anschluss on largely religious grounds. (In Austria, self-identifying as a 'national socialist' typically meant you were a Protestant who supported the Anschluss, as opposed to those who identified as 'fascist' who were largely Catholics who opposed unification with Germany) Of course the Fatherland Front was really concerned about power, which is why they indentified as Catholic in a largely Catholic nation in the first place.

Facism as a manifested ideology doesn't give a poo poo what the religion is. It doesn't care if it's mystical Paganism or Monotheism. The only thing that matters is that the religion can enforce the facist state. Which is why the NDSAP abanoned Paganism, for Christianity, specifically Protestantism. It really has no higher spiritual ideals, it deifies Action and Force and it will discard whatever it no longer has a use for, like Ideological Darwinism.

It's no wonder then that Mussolini, who was an admitted atheist, renewed his vows at a public, Catholic ceremony. (He was originally only married civily) And promptly shut up about being anti-catholic. Sure in his ideal world he would probably oust the Pope as a bulwark against him being Supreme Dictator of Nova Roma, but Mussolini understood that for the forseeable future he just couldn't get away with that so he played nice with the papacy to keep the public happy.

That's what these People dipshits don't get. Fascism would gladly liquidate them and all they cared about the moment it became beneficial to do so! If anything it will betray the alt-right for the despised Normies and Chad's that make up the majority of the population just like it sidelined or purged the Strasserist and Occultist elements that made up the original NDSAP, because Hitler wanted normie appeal. (And Krupp money but that's a different issue all together)
