I don't think it's right to call them atheists since almost to a man they at least believed in some twisted form of God or higher providence that guided the führer and Aryan race to its great destiny, and many of them were observant of some flavor of Christian worship. Then of course you've also got Rosenberg's Positive Christianity, which attempted to reconcile Christianity with Nazi racial ideology.

i mean nazism as an ideology is a religion in itself complete with its own mythologization of the german "aryan" people that takes a lot from native pre-christianization germanic paganism and odinism. of course much of this is a bastardized retelling of those mythologies. they believed so strongly in their own made up origin stories that they sent archeologists around lookinh for evidence of it.

I think it's disingenuous as hell to say that the majority of Nazis weren't Christians. Attempts to revive Norse Paganism were an early phenomenon and mostly given up on when it became apparent it wasn't gonna work out. Nerds like Himmler were basically funding occult passion projects. National Socialism was an extremely Protestant phenomenon. (The Catholics had their own brand of facism, typified by the Fatherland Front in Austria) I think it's important to realize facism is inherently opportunistic. It will always try to appeal to the largest amount of the dominant group. In Germany's case, this meant trading in Paganism for Protestantism. Another example is how Mussolini was privately an atheist, but publicly made nice with the papacy. Facism doesn't want to change things, it wants to accumulate as much power as possible and that involves being as palatable as possible to the volk at large.

business hammocks posted:What is it about nazis and failure? I'm more wondering what it is about nazis and that kind of fast-talking, erudite, linguistic-blitzkrieg kind of verbal style. When I first saw this guy in the Vice video he reminded me eerily of a whole bunch of people I've known who have this sort of repulsive yet irresistible charisma about them. Even if you hate what they're saying, you're compelled to listen to them just because they seem so drat confident. Talking comes naturally to them, they can hold an audience; in another life they might have been That Theatre Major Guy. Or preachers. Cantwell's not the only one either; some of the other nazis the Vice video talked to have the same kind of oratorical energy, though of a more formulaic, sloganeering kind. But on this track they've managed to aim themselves in a direction where their verbal aptitude (even if it isn't backed up by, like, being funny or likable or anything) is what makes them seem like some kind of superman that others in the group can nucleate around. Small wonder he spent all that time in the gym.

quote:Mr. G is a very intellectual young man who was an infant prodigy. He has been concerned with general ideas since the age of ten and has one of those minds that can scintillatingly rationalize everything. I have known him for ten years and in that time have heard him enthusiastically explain Marx, social credit, technocracy, Keynesian economics, Chestertonian distributism, and everything else one can imagine. Mr. G will never be a Nazi, because he will never be anything. His brain operates quite apart from the rest of his apparatus. He will certainly be able, however, fully to explain and apologize for Nazism if it ever comes along. But Mr. G is always a “deviationist.” When he played with communism he was a Trotskyist; when he talked of Keynes it was to suggest improvement; Chesterton’s economic ideas were all right but he was too bound to Catholic philosophy. So we may be sure that Mr. G would be a Nazi with purse-lipped qualifications. He would certainly be purged. goons.txt
