While you are right, I am obligated to recommend the Shin Megami Tensei series as being excellent party-based collectible monster rpgs. Nocturne is probably the best in the franchise, so start there if you want to try Pokemon if it were dark and edgy without being embarrassing. :v:

Alternatively go for a cheap knock-off called Siralim.

I mean, games with rpg mechanics and monsters you can collect and hone into weapons do exist outside of Pokemon, but on the other hand, there are none with the same level of polish and care the Pokemon games have. ... Except for Nocturne but I'm biased, and its tone and difficult is very different.

I wouldn't go as far to say "polished" when it comes to Pokemon. The games often end up with a lot of little annoyances that stack up once you notice them. The biggest one being that despite almost all official Pokemon leagues irl have a double battle format, the mainline Pokemon games' battles are mainly singles.

I, er, I meant that SMT is dark/edgy in a way that weirdly works. It's not embarrassing like some games. (Lookin' at you, fangame Pokemon Reborn)

Pokemon is friendly and cool, like Kemono Friends.
