New topic: The Root had an interesting article about the Afropunk festival in NYC http://verysmartbrothas.theroot.com/did-afropunk-lose-its-punk-roots-1798377090 I found the idea of a sort of self-gentrification within a marginalized culture interesting, and wondered if anyone else had any thoughts on it. I thiiiiiink I get where you're coming from. When I was a teen the poor white and black kids intermingled in my social circle and we all grew up down river so everyone was mixing it up in the hood. You get invited to the cookout and people unfamiliar with you think you're a try hard who got too comfortable around black people. Admittedly as a kid (up til my preteens) I was poor and black in a rich white neighborhood (West Bloomfield/Bloomfield hills for my Michigan homies) which was the loving worst. Moving into a place (which is majority black) and also "lower class" was actually good for me. I fit in better. Kinda. I was a black scene queen in highschool haha

When I was a kid I used to just do a skin fade on my whole head because the barber my (white) dad took me to was an Italian-American vietnam vet who cut hair in the army. For real I didn't find a good black barber who could give me the exact fade I wanted until last year. Depending on how nappy/kinky it is, you may also have success with headwraps. They're the bomb when you ain't got no time to untangle your hair or do twist outs or any other styling, just fold it into a nice shape with or without your hair showing, and go. Just make sure it's a proper wrap with the right kind of fabric (wax coated cotton), so it will style and hold it's shape right. Shockingly, my wife, even with her type 4C hair, didn't own any wraps until earlier this year (just a little do rag for sleeping in to prevent tangles), and she decided to try them out since she sometimes got frustrated with having to spend a lotta time doing twist outs before bed so her hair would be tractable in the morning, aaaaaaaand now she's hooked on them and loves the ease of getting ready to go out with them. We found a nice site that sells some gorgeous wraps that included video tutorials on how to do different styles, which is what helped sell her on the idea. And yeah, thirding that you gotta get a Black hairstylist, wypipo and asians just ain't know what to do with Black hair. In a pinch, you can see if there's any Dominican hairstylists near you, as lots of Dominicans have fairly nappy hair and they will usually know how to cut and style it properly (you can seriously type 'Dominican hair salon' into google and it may show some local to you). Then I bounced around from stylist to stylist never quite finding anything that worked right before giving up and starting the locks. Then I had to abandon that, then I transitioned (fortunately I got the locks out without too much cutting so I had a head start on growing my hair out) and now I get to fight with finding a stylist that is trans friendly (and can handle a masculinized hairline) in addition to multiracial friendly. So basically the story of having no clue who I am and my mom not having the ability to support me outside of her own white context.

First artist I would like to talk about is Kerry James Marshall, he was actually just featured in Art Forum in January of this year. His artwork sometimes integrates other modern art movements (such as De Stijl, and Minimalism), and at the same time explicitly about Black Culture, and history. I grew up submerged in the mayo in the land of Wypipo and can attest that no matter how much Hellmann's clogged your ear canals you still knew swastikas are loving racist. "Dumb thing I did as a teen" applies to skipping classes or hanging around structurally unsound abandoned buildings or making regrettable posts on social media. "haha swastika shirts j/k!!!!" does not qualify.
