I took the liberty of correcting your post.
Anyways, I don't think that criticism should be treated as existing in a vacuum. And the idea that this is suddenly meaningful now that a black guy is benefiting but is also not at all racist is risible.

There is an argument to be had about whether the problem is income rather than wealth, and whether Obama giving speeches about healthcare or John Boyega earning millions of dollars for Pacific Rim 2 are genuinely bigger problems than your average office worker or cop. It is not important compared to the bad idea that criticism ought to be immunized from criticism.

New topic: The Root had an interesting article about the Afropunk festival in NYC http://verysmartbrothas.theroot.com/did-afropunk-lose-its-punk-roots-1798377090 I found the idea of a sort of self-gentrification within a marginalized culture interesting, and wondered if anyone else had any thoughts on it.

Alternatively, anyone got any personal experience with that festival, or being black in the punk scene?

A president who passed Dodd Frank, a president who ended up making the money back from the Tarp funds they sent out?

So she copied all of Life of Pablo for merch, Rihanna's Anti for the album cover, and Beyonce's Lemonade visuals for the video. Too bad she's a poo poo songwriter, she might as well steal from Drake's ghostwriters while she's at it.

La Diabla Blanca is pissed and despite wanting to be "excluded from this narrative" she goes on to continue to coast on painting Kanye as the angry mean black man, even though she was caught lying out her rear end about in one video. She literally checks him in her lyrics and is embracing the wave of racism against Kanye by trying to reclaim being called a "snake".

I'm not here to defend Kanye's crazy rear end but rather point out that this white demon is happy to embrace racism and has yet to give any fucks about BLM, protesters, Trump, etc. Her father is a rich af Trump supporter so we basically know where she stands.

True, sorry about that. I wanted to address Koalas March's criticism and Cis Autodrag's discomfort (the last thing I want to be doing is making regulars here uncomfortable) but I worried that if I just said something like "I'm not 'faking' it to try and fit in, I talk like that IRL because that's a large part of my social circles", it would have come off as just dismissive of their concerns, so I tried adding some context to try and make where I was coming from a lil bit clearer, and to try and avoid coming off as dismissive or willfully ignorant.

But you're right, I should have just not replied at all. It doesn't help that when I get nervous at social situations I turn into a totally-awkward "too-much-information" dude and start jaw jackin'.

I thiiiiiink I get where you're coming from. When I was a teen the poor white and black kids intermingled in my social circle and we all grew up down river so everyone was mixing it up in the hood. You get invited to the cookout and people unfamiliar with you think you're a try hard who got too comfortable around black people.

Admittedly as a kid (up til my preteens) I was poor and black in a rich white neighborhood (West Bloomfield/Bloomfield hills for my Michigan homies) which was the loving worst.

Moving into a place (which is majority black) and also "lower class" was actually good for me. I fit in better. Kinda. I was a black scene queen in highschool haha

When I was a kid I used to just do a skin fade on my whole head because the barber my (white) dad took me to was an Italian-American vietnam vet who cut hair in the army. For real I didn't find a good black barber who could give me the exact fade I wanted until last year.

I am still trying to get my hair completely on lock. I moved to a new area and the stylists here all seem to cater to other minority groups with really straight hair. I have a routine that sort of works but involves am excessive amount of Lush products and I can't help but feel my hair could be way better if I could find a stylist who knew anything about mixed hair.

I would advise looking for a biracial stylist. I never get good results unless the person working on my hair has my hair type. Have you tried looking on facebook?

That's a thing? I've always found stylists by word of mouth.

All the ones I've seen so far are white or Asian. I've got an appointment with a white lady because it's been 4 months since I had my color redone and my roots are so bad but if you have tips on finding better stylists I can definitely use them for the next go round.

Depending on how nappy/kinky it is, you may also have success with headwraps. They're the bomb when you ain't got no time to untangle your hair or do twist outs or any other styling, just fold it into a nice shape with or without your hair showing, and go. Just make sure it's a proper wrap with the right kind of fabric (wax coated cotton), so it will style and hold it's shape right.

Shockingly, my wife, even with her type 4C hair, didn't own any wraps until earlier this year (just a little do rag for sleeping in to prevent tangles), and she decided to try them out since she sometimes got frustrated with having to spend a lotta time doing twist outs before bed so her hair would be tractable in the morning, aaaaaaaand now she's hooked on them and loves the ease of getting ready to go out with them. We found a nice site that sells some gorgeous wraps that included video tutorials on how to do different styles, which is what helped sell her on the idea.

And yeah, thirding that you gotta get a Black hairstylist, wypipo and asians just ain't know what to do with Black hair. In a pinch, you can see if there's any Dominican hairstylists near you, as lots of Dominicans have fairly nappy hair and they will usually know how to cut and style it properly (you can seriously type 'Dominican hair salon' into google and it may show some local to you).

OMG, def throwing some money their way on payday next week.

I'm like somewhere between 3A and B but closer to A, and way too pale to pull off headwraps. I'm only 1/4 (and 1/4 blackfoot) and my hair is p much my most black feature. I aborted on an attempt to grow locks before I transitioned too because even though they came in super naturally (I p much just ripped them in a little bit and let them go, none of the crazy backcombing and waxing stoner kids do) it was drawing a lot of comments from both white and black acquaintances that made it clear that no one on either side understood why I was doing it (which was that I'd given up on finding a stylist in white-rear end Madison that could handle my hair at all :sigh:).

My hair is pretty much a microcosm of my relationship with blackness. Until I was ten I thought I had a "jew fro" because my mom "protected" me from the knowledge I was black (granted at the behest of my black grandfather who told her never to contact them again or tell me about them, that's some poo poo). After she finally told me my hair was still just a tangly puffy mess because my mom had no clue how to care for it so I was just using the Aussie products everyone else in my house used. In high school I gave up and shaved my head. Then I didn't cut it again until I was 20 (which was 5 years later cuz I skipped a grade then didn't get into any schools I could afford on my first try after graduating). Then I bounced around from stylist to stylist never quite finding anything that worked right before giving up and starting the locks. Then I had to abandon that, then I transitioned (fortunately I got the locks out without too much cutting so I had a head start on growing my hair out) and now I get to fight with finding a stylist that is trans friendly (and can handle a masculinized hairline) in addition to multiracial friendly.

So basically the story of having no clue who I am and my mom not having the ability to support me outside of her own white context.

I have no idea what I'm doing.
I had this idea for a while when everyone seemed to really liked talking medieval paintings, I thought maybe people would be interested in modern art as well? First artist I would like to talk about is Kerry James Marshall, he was actually just featured in Art Forum in January of this year. His artwork sometimes integrates other modern art movements (such as De Stijl, and Minimalism), and at the same time explicitly about Black Culture, and history. A lot of his paintings feature Red, Black and Green which are the colors of the stripes on the Pan-African Flag.

Bomb Magazine Interview of Kerry James Marshall posted:

Black people occupy a space, even mundane spaces, in the most fascinating ways. Style is such an integral part of what black people do that just walking is not a simple thing. You’ve got to walk with style. You’ve got to talk with a certain rhythm; you’ve got to do things with some flair. And so in the paintings I try to enact that same tendency toward the theatrical that seems to be so integral a part of the black cultural body. When you talk about this obligation to articulate some socially relevant issue, a lot of that has everything to do with where I came from. You can’t be born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1955 and not feel like you’ve got some kind of social responsibility. You can’t move to Watts in ’63, and grow up in South Central near the Black Panthers headquarters and see the kinds of things that I saw in my developmental years, and not speak about it. That determined a lot of where my work was going to go.

"Untitled" (2009)
I like this one because of the idea of a painting inside of a painting, kind of get a little sneak peak on what the background would be. Not sure if there is a nod to abstract expressionism on her shirt, as it looks like a hint of forest and trees. One really cool thing is the paints on the unfinished canvas are the paints on the palette.

Untitled (Club Couple) (2014)

School of Beauty, School of Culture (2012)

Souvenir I (1997)

De Style (1993)
This last one is a reference to the De Stijl movement which consist of paintings with Red Blue and Yellow and sharp rectangle/lines. I figured since the topic of barbershops and hair came up it would be a nice closer. And here a link to more of the interview from above.

I grew up submerged in the mayo in the land of Wypipo and can attest that no matter how much Hellmann's clogged your ear canals you still knew swastikas are loving racist. "Dumb thing I did as a teen" applies to skipping classes or hanging around structurally unsound abandoned buildings or making regrettable posts on social media.
